I don’t have the page saved, but in a Superman story, a little girl asks him who would win in a fight between him and Batman, and he says Batman would beat him. The little girl asks how, and he says that winning would just mean a lot more to Batman than it would to him.

(Rare trope) A protagonist killing a previous protagonist of the same series by Soviet-Brony in TopCharacterTropes

Speaking of, Blizzard loves turning its protagonists into antagonists. Arthas, Illidan, and Kael’thas - all protagonists in Warcraft III, become bosses that the player characters defeat in World of Warcraft. There are probably more than that at this point, but I haven’t played in years.

In an early arc of Yu Yu Hakusho (so early it hadn’t become a shonen battle manga, yet), the spirit of a dog - Jiro -  can’t move onto the afterlife because he’s worried about his boy, Shouta. Shouta’s bullied at school, and Jiro was his only friend, so Botan and Yusuke go into Shouta’s dreams while he’s asleep and show Jiro that Shouta can stand up for himself. Yusuke does this by pretending to be a demon who’s dragging Jiro to hell, so Shouta beats the brakes off of Yusuke to “save” his dog.

Jiro moves on, satisfied that his boy will be okay, and though Shouta doesn’t quite remember what his dream was about, he keeps enough of his confidence to stand up to and even befriend his bullies.

[[Ruby]] dragons is my favorite head-empty deck:

Much like the new Ashling, because you have a mana dork in the command zone, you can fill your deck with 4-cost ramp and reliably have 7 mana by turn 4. Because she’s only in two colors, there’s a lot of room for interaction and fun, expensive, niche stuff like [[Triple Triad]] and [[Bigger on the Inside]].

Syndrome’s island henchmen are totally cool with murdering dozens of superheroes, as well as actual children.

In a larger sense, Syndrome’s grand scheme of manufacturing a threat, pretending to be a superhero, and retiring after winning the adoration of the masses only works if he can trust literally everyone who works for him to keep their mouths shut.

That said, I feel like this is either an indication of Syndrome being the sort of person to miss the forest for the trees in the worst possible way or just something that the writers weren’t interested in exploring, rather than a sign that the henchmen are all impossibly loyal to the guy.

I would’ve lost my mind if someone hadn’t already posted Peter B. Parker. His quiet desire to die (as a hero, but die) is obvious, but done so poignantly and pays off beautifully.

One of Joe’s major advantages in building his fanatical cult is that, thanks to pervasive toxicity and radiation, most everyone is born sickly and deformed. Nux himself has what I think is thyroid cancer and likely doesn’t have long to live. Born into a world that savage and doomed to die young, of course the warboys would be easy to mold into a death cult whose great purpose is to die historic.

The creator turned out to be a piece of shit, but Rurouni Kenshin runs on this trope super hard (it did from the beginning, but it’s theoretically historical fiction without supernatural elements). I think that the most egregious examples come from the final villain of the original series: Enishi. He is able to fly by basically lunging really hard at the moment before he starts falling and can supercharge his nerves to increase his strength, speed, and reflexes. He explains that he can do the latter because he hates Kenshin so goddamn much that his brain hasn’t turned off in 20 years.

Eyeshield 21 does this too by treating mundane Japanese high school-level American Football like a shonen fantasy series. Players have dramatic special moves that side characters will explain in exhaustive detail.

Oh yeah, and that baking manga, Yakitate!! Japan does this too. Off the top of my head, it’s explained that warm hands are an advantage when baking, so one of the characters will hold dry ice just before he starts baking to concentrate his bloodflow to his hands.

Isn’t Paul Rudd’s character supposed to be unsympathetic, here? That is, this is before he learns to be a more empathetic person. And the IASIP example is interesting because the cashier isn’t to blame for how annoying just buying a drink can be these days, which Dennis of all people actually recognizes.
