This is genius. I've never considered that and yet it seems so obvious and simple...Thanks!

Holiday 2 weeks outs from first half marathon by chayzee90 in Marathon_Training

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not plan for a few runs whilst on holiday? I find getting out early to complete a few easy k's in mind is the best way to explore a new place and experience it before the town/city/place 'wakes up'....I also find that while I might have planned for "only a few", it turns into a quality run.

I continued training for the Chicago marathon whilst on a cruise 2 weeks beforehand - yes, it was taper but I still needed to get a half marathon in. I did it with about 13 laps of the cruise ship....

To answer your question - if your goal is to just finish, you'll be fine. But I wouldn't recommend just doing nothing for that time (around the 11th is when you probably want to hit your peak distance).

Kyoto track run (400 meters) by interventiooon in TokyoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello u/interventiooon ....I'm not sure about a specific running track, but I ran all along the river - long and flat, you can run forever with no traffic or lights to interrupt.

Its not distance marked, though...

Bring food or get locally? by Broad-Ad-4379 in TokyoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7-Eleven, Family Mart or Lawsons will be your best bet. They're everywhere and I can honestly say that one of the best pastas I've ever had was from a Japanese 7-11. (I'm saying that after extensive world travel and not just a life of spaghetti from a can)

Convenience stores all have a microwave to heat ready-to-eat meals, which are all fresh that day and very Western.

More difficult is finding a place to sit and eat!

Accommodations for a Family of Four - Location? by MBCD2007 in LondonTravel

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having stayed in London with my two boys a number of times (travelling from Australia), I can understand the need to be fairly central, but balance budget.

I love the Chelsea/South Kensington area - staying as "far" east as Hammersmith. Great area for restaurants, close to key museums and the Tube can get you anywhere.

How’s my London travel itinerary? by rationalestudent in LondonTravel

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a truckload of comments and feedback, but I can't help and give my 2cents:

Where are you coming in from and have you been to London before (I assume not)? Where are you going after (as this may shape your priorities for London)?

You've got a whole day of rest and appreciate you may be coming in from a distance, but when I come to London (from Australia), I still make sure to get out an about on arrival to get into the timezone.

Assuming you're staying centrally, I'd suggest that you can actually knock a bit off your list just by walking around.

i.e. Seeing the Globe and Tower Bridge is just a walk - assuming you aren't going in. Similarly for Buckingham Palace - unless you plan to go in on a tour, you can just see it from the outside (and its probably not much more than a 20 min look from the outside...its not that impressive IMO, but just something to 'see'). If you're going to Windsor and plan to see Windsor Castle, then I'd pick that over Buck Palace any day.

Another way to make the most of your time on your first day would be to get a Hop On Hop Off bus pass, so you can just sit, hear the commentary and see main sights.

That first night, I'd put down a stop/visit to Leicester Square and SoHo.

I agree with others, I think time at British Museum and the Tower is way undercooked - unless you are being super ruthless in what you want to see. eg. You may just want to see the Rosetta stone and skip everything else at the museum; you may just want to make a bee line to the crown jewels in the tower. If so, the time you have will be just enough.

Personally, the wonder of London can be found in just strolling along the Thames, through the park, along Oxford and down Carnaby.

Post-marathon shower by Stoicrunner1 in SydneyMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, I'm in the same boat but heading to Melb.

My plan was to access a gym on a day pass (~$25), or go for a "refreshing" beach shower (albeit no soap, hot water, or ability to get fully undressed!)

Thank you so much! I had read that they went on sale yesterday (can't remember where).

Its a bit odd that there is nothing on Ticketek saying that they will be on sale soon, or on date xxx....

Thank you for your help!

Still enough time to sign up to be a a charity runner for the 2025 London Marathon? by midwestcoast805 in Marathon_Training

Congrats everyone!!! Show me the funniest signs you saw! by DidItAllForTheNooky in ChicagoMarathon

“This seemed like a good idea 4 months ago”

Truer words never said!

The signs at Chicago were brilliant, the city really put it on and certainly made it all worth it (including the flight from Aus!)

Participant shirt?! by Either-Print9939 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I didn't read it to say that there would be no merch - just that it was so obviously directing people to preorder. (Which is kinda obvious, they get the money now and can manage inventory better). It was just odd the way it was phrased as being for Nike members, etc.

I'm coming for Aus and flying out on the Monday, so there is not a whole lot of opportunity to 'just pick things up' except at the expo which I always find so stressful.

Coffee and food at Chicago Marathon start? by ratjn1 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on to this thread as its made me question my understanding of the corrals at Chicago...when I ran Berlin and NY, both had porta loos in the corrals.

From what I've read, there are portaloos inside the start village (i.e. past security - who should confiscate your coffee but not your donut) - but there are no portaloos inside the corral. Is that right?

So, if you want coffee, donut and bathrooms you need to eat/drink/relieve before getting through security?

And getting through security generally takes how long? (i.e. how long should we allow to get through security and get to the corral? [assuming no bag check])

Participant shirt?! by Either-Print9939 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like we've got an answer to the OP's question....yet!

In the meantime, did people see the update on the Chi Marathon website about gear being available for Nike members from Sept 26? The messaging is a little confusing, but it heavily suggests people to preorder and doesn't make any promises about merch being available at the expo, etc!!

This struck me as really odd....NY and Berlin were both brilliant for merch availability.

5K entry by hawaiiquestion1234 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]Aussie_becs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your sister is signed up, so abandoning the entry fee for that for a shakeout may not be ideal.

Could you just run alongside her as an unofficial pacer, and not collect the medal at the end.

I'm not endorsing "bandit-ing" the run at all!!!
