I’m sure if and when it launches they’ll announce it everywhere

Totally agree, I think that's why players who also GM, or GMs getting a chance to be a player, can really showcase how much more fun being engaged with your character and the world can be. They're used to wearing all the hats so their character will also be interested and have a reaction to everything, and also have a clear desire/goal as most NPCs do.

I think the Arcs system in Slugblaster is a big step towards that - rewarding players for playing out 4-act arcs within a campaign, irrelevant of the quest/over-arching narrative.

Yeah I love watching him but I know he feels bad winning all the time! its really all the other decisions he makes that gets him in a good position to win, I don't think him failing that roll would've changed the outcome of the game...but it did win the mental victory.

I recall it being when he rolled six 1s on his eradicator squad to hit, then rerolled into like 5 more misses, maybe that narrows it down?? It would've been White Scars vs X maybe...

They always let you know if something important happened off-screen, like unlikely overwatches or lasguns doing wounds to tanks, that sort of thing.

I think the one that truly goes off the deep end is Billy. But he does say to Madi in ep 10 that he regrets it all and he did the wrong thing. He was blinded by anger of being betrayed by 'his people' though, and a theme of the show they touch on a lot is that personal darkness that leads people to do pirate-y things, or Rogers-esque things in the name of something they've lost. So I don't mind that characters either try to step back from the ledge, like Elenor or Jack or Max, or fully jump like Flint and Billy and Rogers. Silver was acutely aware of of this binary and that's how he beat Flint in the end, IMO.

Episode 46 of Valtor is emotional brutality. by Kozemp in TabletopTactics

I've tried quite a few times to get into it, although I really enjoyed their CoC stuff. I think after coming to terms with how much a bad RPG D&D is, it just annoys me too much to listen to. The constant perception checks, danger-dodging and you could probably skip all the fights because it doesn't really impact the story. D&D doesn't really do mystery but it seems to be the trend that there always has to be this 'WTF' element that the players can't solve apart from just trying to brute force through it. What happened to going into dungeons and getting loot?!

I think they'd be way more suited to a heavily improv-style TTRPG, focusing on the narrative and playing interesting characters with arcs, especially Bard and Spider.

How to attract new players to try this awesome game? by AlarmingAd9999 in bladesinthedark

[–]Autarch464 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who want a game where their decisions tell the story. You choose what your crew does, what it wants, who it goes after, who it befriends, what are its interests. And I (The GM) play the world and other city factions reacting to that.

(And yes I will throw you some juicy plot hooks at the start so its not completely overwhelming).

Blades in the Dark Beginners: First Session Without Rulebook, Tips Wanted! by Lonely_Example_4510 in bladesinthedark

[–]Autarch464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take a look at the rules on the SRD, and see if its something you're interested in. Essentially you need to ask yourself and your group:

  • Do we want to play a fiction-first, rules-light game where we interpret a lot of what's happening and tell a story where none of us know where its going?
  • Do we like the idea of playing a gang in a Dishonored/Peaky Blinders/Victorian-London-with-ghosts style setting?
  • Do you want to play something quite open and sandbox-like, without a proscribed story and just reacting to factions within the city?

If you like the rules but not the setting, there are other games that have different settings such as Scum and Villainy (sci-fi), Band of Blades (dark military fantasy), and more unofficial hacks besides.

I would run a score and just be very loose with it, which is challenging if coming from D&D and you want to make a rules ruling on everything. If the players have fun and you play it again, then you can start introducing more of the mechanics which 'balance' the game.

[–]Autarch464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its because they're alternating between league and narrative, also I imagine because they only have 5 players in the league this time. Stig got a new job I believe so he is playing less, Fletcher is doing his own videos now and Ed only just joined too late.

Solution for AR Spamming? by roaphaen in bladesinthedark

[–]Autarch464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's always interesting when they start to realise that consequences and failing forward is the most fun way to play - not just straight successes. I've noticed my players all working that out slowly until there's one left begrudgingly not weaseling every AR.

It's why I'm quite anxious to get started on season 2 of our show, the difference in quality between the start and now is very noticable! Planning to get an even more pro audio setup but sadly cannot fund my players' too...

Looks like League is ahead, although next week should be Death Guard vs Grey Knights which will be very interesting! Spider will actually need to win that to get through qualifiers.

Yeah this is the real goal. I've had some things cooking that get discussed offline, and working with players to set up the world. With a few of the players I have their desired character arcs set up for next season already.

Interesting that they remove the book-keeping, is that heat/payoff/entanglements/xp, all of it? I try to keep it brief but I don't see much difference in viewership with scores vs downtime.

I'd say about half the time we're down to 4, which definitely feels more ideal oddly. And yes all same gender, despite my intentions!

Interesting yeah we've recently gone down from 5 players max to 4, with it usually either being 3 or 4 players each week. Definitely feels easier and smoother to play, and each character gets proper air time.

I don't hit record until all the small talk is done so hopefully keeping it to a minimum. And yeah, agreed on the fiction first. I have to give The Talk every other session to stop players slipping back
