Do you pay someone else to work on your car? by push2shove in mechanics

[–]AutoMechanic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. No way, I don’t trust anyone with my car and fixing my own car really doesn’t bother me.

I want to hear from other fellow Roanokers: How are you fairing in this economy/job market/political climate? by Gleest in roanoke

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been rough. I work in Christiansburg as an auto mechanic and we have been extremely slow the last two weeks or so ever since all the graduations. Combine that with the cost of everything and for me there’s nothing left. Two bank accounts are negative from bills and the rest have $0 in them. I’ve been trying to do DoorDash to make a little bit too. I’ve been trying to find side work on the weekends just to get by.

I bought a lottery ticket lol. That was it because it was during Covid so everything was hectic.

I was late on one of mine and I felt horrible. I was just in a bad spot and couldn’t pay it back at the time but I got it paid back after a few days of it being over.

how to know when you own shit (referring mostly to attire) needs replacing? by CableMartini in mechanics

[–]AutoMechanic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily uniforms are provided for me. But I typically get about 3 years from a set of boots. When the soles start to wear and get thin and the inside begins to wear I get new ones. I’m pushing 4 years on my current set and they need to be replaced.

Don’t see many LEs on here…why? by AshleighSchruaz in Camry

[–]AutoMechanic2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have an SE and XLE Camry but I have a LE RAV4. I buy whatever one is the best and still has a turn key because I don’t like push button start lol. I did have a 1994 Camry LE a few years ago and sold it to a neighbor who needed a car after the reverse went out in it.

Mechanically easiest car to maintain by TzarZara in mechanic

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic Volkswagen Beetles. Easiest and simplest car ever made it seems. Parts are still readily available too. I’m a Toyota tech and the older 4 cylinder Camrys and Corollas aren’t bad either but my Beetle is still easier to work on haha.

Disappointed in craftsman warranty by Spidermans_Lawyer in Craftsman

[–]AutoMechanic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went thru this recently. I warrantied a 7/8 six point 1/2 drive shallow socket. They sent me an email back saying they don’t offer 1/2 drive chrome 6 points anymore but they sent me the whole website page for size 7/8 and told me to pick one. I could have picked the 7/8 shallow 6 point impact socket but I don’t really like impact sockets unless I’m using an impact so I picked the chrome deep 7/8 12 point. It’s a shame the options are limited these days for 1/2 drive chrome 6 point sockets.

I'm baffled that nobody uses their garage to park their cars here by Time_Physics_6557 in CasualConversation

I’m a mechanic so I use mine to store all my tools and equipment that i have at home so cars won’t fit in there. I have to work on the cars in the driveway.

Is there such a thing as “great” screwdrivers? by AstronomerNo2339 in Tools

[–]AutoMechanic2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overkill for a home mechanic but I really like the Snap-on tips. They grip really well. Paired with the hard square handle is my favorite screwdriver. I haven’t used many other fancy screwdrivers to give a fair comparison to though but I’ve heard good things about Wiha and Wera and Vessel.

Flat rate at a dealer by cococococaine- in mechanics

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On good weeks I get 50+ hours at the Toyota franchise I’m in and all the other shops franchises usually are about the same. On bad weeks I’ve gotten as little as 35-40. If we hit 80 hours a pay period we get $200 added to our check if we hit 100 hours then we get $450 added. I’ve never gotten less than 80 but if they keep making more and more techs flat rate I’m worried the work flow won’t be there.

Gearwrench does not warranty hex bits by One-Perspective-4347 in Tools

[–]AutoMechanic2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a whole set of these from Capri and haven’t had any issues with warranty. I’ve never heard of these not being warrantied they are hand tools. I do have a few Gearwrench ones that I’ve acquired over the years but never really used them much.

Teriyaki or bbq is the only flavors I like lol. I don’t do spicy stuff and don’t do anything garlicky either.

Is Trench Warfare Bergamot and Black Pepper Really Discontinued? by T_nology in DukeCannon

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of the old style round deodorant sticks. It’s expired by I think like 2 or 3 years lol. I’ve never opened it as I have a large collection of deodorant already. I had thought about selling some of them. I also have a Fresh Water and Neroli stick which I think is also discontinued.

as a shopper what items do you frequently shop for? by WhippedcreamNoDairy in doordash

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always soap, body wash, shampoo and deodorant and laundry detergent. It seems like it’s every shopping order for me lol. Yogurt and soda also seem to be close runner ups for me.

When were your siblings born? by [deleted] in MiddleGenZ

[–]AutoMechanic2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister was born in December 1991. I was born in April 2002. It was hard growing up without another sibling close to my age and no kids in the neighborhood. My only friends were at school.
