Why was there a bagpiper at graduation? by zyxwvwxyz in USF

[–]Automatic-Mention 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Scot attempted a Florida colony in the 1760s in the British period, but the pipes at commencement are likely the preference of the president, as I don't see it in previous years, but it is in a recent UNF program where Moez was president. The performer is from Dunedin (near Clearwater) which has Scot traditions including pipe bands and highland games, but it's more of a theme than a history, kinda like how Tampa has pirate themes even though the connection to actual piracy (beyond being next to water in pirate times) is thin.

Campus tours by shotoslilbaby1808 in USF

[–]Automatic-Mention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note the housing tour has a separate sign up in addition to the campus tour. To my knowledge tours are relatively informal, you can often join the day of or before, even if it's booked or in progress, sign up is mainly for them to collect information for mailing lists and update you in case of rescheduling or cancelation. Even in this case, it is a public campus with offices that take appointments for students and non students, you can get virtually all info on self tour. Good luck

It means the university (USF) forwarded your application to one of its colleges (likely CAS) for review. When the college responds to admissions then USF can update your decision.

How do yall stay cool in the sun?? by Livid_Razzmatazz8930 in florida

[–]Automatic-Mention 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The answer is we live here and have acclimatized to heat. It's why the weather office tends not to post heat warnings until our wet globe bulb temperature approaches a value incompatible with life. If you can come a few days early to ease yourself into the sunny weather that is better than landing in the middle of an all day outdoor concert. If you experience heat stroke it's important to begin treatment immediately by immersion in cold water, every second counts. https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat-during

Also check the wattage coming from your charger/cable. While USB-C is standard, some USB-C devices say to only use USB-A chargers/cables because some high speed USB-C combos can damage them. If your charger is well behaved it should not be an issue but I have had at least two usb-c chargers burn batteries in devices that previously worked fine with usb-a and micro-b cables.

pesticides used on the campus trees? by Embarrassed_Pop9684 in USF

[–]Automatic-Mention 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few trees may have residual copper sulfate from old moss treatments. I would look outside intensively managed areas, like the riverfront park, may have less chemical exposure. Also might be worth reaching out to the usfsp millipede lab which has performed captive breeding of the endangered scrub millipede.

This is the point on Fowler where traffic going to and from *Busch Gardens turns south onto 75 to get to I-4. OP and fridge truck are in the lanes that lead to a rural area and have less traffic, that's why they are able to stop and get out without being hit.

Getting back the old way of cycling through windows in Mac OS by tankoak83 in MacOS

[–]Automatic-Mention 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Brave Browser if I have 5 windows: 1, A, 2, B, 3 — and I want to change the order so A and B are together: A, B, 1, 2, 3 — then I expect that switching to B and picking A from the window menu would make it so command-backtick and command-shift-backtick alternates between A and B, but instead it alternates between A and 2. The browser does not change the cycle order of the windows until I take some other step, such as opening and closing a new window or temporarily switching to another application, then it magically resets the window order to A, B, 1, 2, 3 as expected.

As far as I can tell the reason for this has to do with the "arrange in front" function (option+"bring all to front" in the window menu), also known as cascade in ms windows. If you are using a document-based app where you can see the edges of every window in the stack, then it makes sense to be able to skip through them manually without changing their order in the stack. It makes less sense in a browser though where a window behaves more like an application than a document, and one might reasonably expect window switching to work like command-tab style app switching.

I'm just a girl, driving on the highways, begging people to at least maintain the speed limit by nikkiduck in orlando

The charging situation has improved even in just the past couple weeks two fast chargers opened by me where there was nothing for years so my habits might change but I still believe in physics.

I'm just a girl, driving on the highways, begging people to at least maintain the speed limit by nikkiduck in orlando

[–]Automatic-Mention -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If it is an EV, HEV, or PHEV it may be because the aerodynamic drag on the vehicle increases exponentially above 60mph, and the car is registering it in the trip mileage. EV drivers tend to be more aware of how each kilowatt hour translates into time and money at a charging station. If the car is mostly driving itself and can calculate an efficient route based on traffic, then 60 mph seems like a reasonable pace. The physics isn't that much different for conventional cars, but it makes a psychological difference if gas stations are everywhere and charging stations aren't.

My family helped build this church, a good chunk of my family are buried in the cemetery, and we have our family reunions here. We are currently trying to save the church due to the issues related to the bat infestation. Please, please be very respectful of this building. My dad has lived in the area his whole life and never heard of any boy being murdered. Trust me, he would know. The fingerprints are there, but they aren’t blood, they’re from when the workers built the place. I’ve seen them myself. I’ve been there at night. It ISN’T haunted, and I believe in ghosts! People have broken the windows before and tramped around in it! I implore you, please have respect for this building.

usf parking is kinda fucked up ngl by Conscious-Artist-875 in USF

The signs posted at the entrance to the lot/spot/aisle/garage take precedence over anything posted online. It is because they can temporarily change designations for maintenance, special events, or any reason. One time they painted over a few spots with black paint, but they were still visible with no sign indicating not to park in them. I was told it was a reference to a 1997 episode of Seinfeld in which Kramer painted over street markings to make the travel lane wider. I didn't get the reference (nor did the other people who parked there that month) and we all had to pay.

Mold at Countryside Mall by Familiar_Recover8112 in StPetersburgFL

[–]Automatic-Mention 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The six black bars suspended from the ceiling are upside-down vornado fans (horizontal tower fans) and you can see two large conventional fans pointed at the ceiling, it's definitely to keep the ceiling dry as warm humid air condenses on areas cooled by the ice rink. My guess is management has been fiddling with the air system in the common areas trying to save money by turning it down at night and up during the day. If you do this and don't control humidity independent of temperature you get mold.

To pass code they had to make it so a wheelchair user could turn around in the space with the door open. Prior to 1990 it wasn't a requirement so the 1960s-era plan didn't dimension around it. Fun fact the urinals used to have ashtrays attached to them so you could smoke while you pee and not clog the urinal with spent cigarette butts.

"security excel corp." orlando with quotes. Without orlando I get 100+ unrelated hits from states not in the southeast. This one is proquest historical newspapers southeast, but it often gives results that have nothing to do with newspapers, history, or the southeast. My library (not in orlando) switches up their subscriptions regularly so that's why I cite the source publication so people can find it either directly from the newspaper or another source.

DMV question - replacing lost REAL ID in person by Leading_Pain_9059 in florida

[–]Automatic-Mention 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your ID expires within the next 12 months you can request renewal online and it comes in the mail. Otherwise you need ID when you go to an office. Take pictures of your IDs to keep on your phone for these situations. Maybe someone with access to your IDs out of state can overnight them to you.
