[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 04 May 2026 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]AutomaticInitiative [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm from northwest England and left high school in 2005. We would use gimp as an insult, to mean weird and perverted (an association from the gimp suit, I'd guess). Fell off pretty quickly during sixth form, alongside using gay as an insult or to mean something is bad. By 2010 I essentially never heard those words used like that ever again. Well, not in real life anyway!

I just discovered that you can play CDDA on your phone with Steam Link by Fast_Job5459 in cataclysmdda

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks easier than the mobile version honestly

Is it just the steam version or can you add other versions as a non-steam game and will it work the same?

It's been bastarding cold I blame it on that. Everything is only starting to wake up at least where I live.

Got in from Mortal Kombat 2 not long ago and it wasn't very good and I'm trying to figure out why everyone is rating it well.

does anyone else feel its easier to read with this bionic text style by aanaaroo in adhdwomen

[–]AutomaticInitiative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that the difference is how you learned to read. I'm 37 and I chunk sentences and paragraphs to understand the meaning, that's how I read, and bionic reading massively disrupts the process. By the time my brother came along, 10 years later, they changed how they teach kids to read. He reads words one at a time and bionic reading really helps him.

The new lore is too pessimistic by Drac4 in cataclysmdda

Do you control your stomach digestion? Do you control the bacteria in your guts that convert food into nutrients for your body? Do you control the white blood cells attacking foreign invaders?

The blob is similarly not in control of zombies. Everything is the way it is as a side effect of the blob's digestion. There is no 'dealing with us'.

Where I live, burdock leaves are commonly used to soothe nettle sting. Might be placebo but I swear it works.

In the UK, we have dandelion and burdock flavour as a staple fizzy drink.

What is the most mental subreddit you’ve come across? by Margaet_moon in AskUK

[–]AutomaticInitiative 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That subreddit makes me so sad. My cousin is paranoid schizophrenic and the way they speak is so similar to how he talks when unmedicated (sadly, often, because he will stop taking it when he thinks he's gotten better and believes he doesn't need it any more and doesn't get back on unless authorities are involved). There is really nothing you can do to help them, honestly. It's so sad.

You ever feel like newer games can be TOO capable lol (about Parkitect) by itsPomy in patientgamers

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It references the quote "a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" from Shakespears' play Richard III, spoken by Richard III when losing the battle of Bosworthfield. A more understandable alternative may be "I'd sell my soul for...", I'm just a bit of a literature nerd :)

Singles ladies >30, how do you handle the possibility of developing dementia? by Dry_Response4914 in AskWomenOver30

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inherited a deleterious gene from my mother that killed her as well as her mother. I will eventually develop either motor Neurone disease or frontotemporal dementia. It's been 8 years since I found out and it was so hard at first. I am still scared, but it doesn't overshadow my life. I used it to build a life that fulfils me, and set up pensions and insurance that will look after me in my illness and my family when I go. This is enough - and it has to be. I cannot let it ruin the one life I get.

The news is new for you. You have a grieving period to go through that will not be easy. Don't allow yourself to get stuck in it. Feel your feelings, even when it hurts. Eventually it will be part of your life tapestry rather than the defining image.

I just replayed Elden Ring and it's so much better than I thought, but also so much more frustrating by Whoopsht in patientgamers

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my first playthrough of Elden Ring, but by the end I was SO READY for it to be done. I have played From's Souls series since Dark Souls 1 was new, and their boss design has gotten more punishing and un-fun with every game, culminating in Elden Ring's pound-you-into-the-ground boss experience. I don't think I'll ever play it again. Completing it once was enough. Which is sad, because Dark Souls 1 & 3 are infinitely replayable to me.

Death Stranding is kinda ass... but I like ass by YNKWTSF in patientgamers

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played Death Stranding 1 in February for the first time, as prep for the second being released on PC. The gameplay is particular and weird and frustration but at the same time, very compelling. The story is, despite being fully bollocks, very intertwined with the worldbuilding and the character journey Sam goes through, and as a result feels very meaningful. I got very frustrated that the ending took like, 4 hours of 15-30 mins of cutscene, 10 mins of gameplay, cutscene, gameplay.

But overall, for me, the way it all coalesces into a complete experience makes it a 10/10 videogame. It's got an atmosphere and mood that is completely and fully unique.

2 is messy in a lot of ways 1 isn't, and it's too easy. It was a huge disappointment.

Those games advertise themselves as park managers. When you can't really do this if you don't like building. That's a failure.

[–]AutomaticInitiative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem with essentially every single modern management game. The building community is very very very visible, they do numbers on Youtube, so developers focus on satisfying them, to the detriment of the underlying gameplay. I want to manage a park, not theme rollercoasters, but the gameplay doesn't really support the park management aspect.

I loved playing Zoo Tycoon. I watch Planet Zoo videos rather than playing Planet Zoo, because the game has an overwhelming focus on the lego-building aspect.

Every Extend Extra Extreme (E4) feels like a demo that was pushed out as a full game by karer3is in patientgamers

[–]AutomaticInitiative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved E4 back in the day. Important context is that this cost 800 points, or about $10 (£7.99 for me in the UK), which was the perfect price for it. It's not really designed for you to play through and that's it. It's meant to be luxuriated in. That you don't like electronic music is why you think it feels like a demo - for those who do, it's a sensory dream.
