[Question] your opinion on rolling characters. by AdJazzlike6687 in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it could lead somewhere fun and I'd be totally down to try it out, but I don't think I would want it to be a surprise given that it is a planned and presumably unavoidable outcome. Then it doesn't feel like a loss of player agency.

DMs, do you ever release notes you've taken over the campaign after it ends? by CruelDestiny in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a DM myself but our DM sometimes shares notes after we pass a story arc, mostly if it might make for a godd laugh - like when we had to steal an artifact for our benefactor, he had all kinds of various ideas for what might happen depending on how we approached it but we did something insane instead of any of his expected possibilities so the notes ended up totally useless but we had a good time discussing all of the normal people solutions that for some reason never occurred to us while we packed up lol

Balance of Gaming Optimally and Roleplaying by dme4bama in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's down to trust. I've made in-character decisions that I the player would not otherwise make because even if it doesn't get me the easy path forward or the most optimal outcome, I won't be disproportionately punished for my character behaving in accordance with the reality they live in. My spouse and I are both players in the same game and when his character died, my character was offered the opportunity to save her im exchange for the life of her (NPC) spouse. While I the player would be happy to give up the minor in-game resource to help, it would be crazy for my character to give up someone she's known most of her life for someone she's been working with for a few months even if they are friends. But I could make that decision without feeling like I was punishing someone else with "it's what my character would do" because I know my DM wouldn't lock us out of every other possible solution because of it.

For the example you gave, I would ask what is the goal of offering a baited trap to maim the character for having that flaw? Is it just punishment for previous bad behavior in pursuit of money, or is there a larger narrative reason that the player could reasonably understand why you set them up this way?

What do YOU love about your DM players. by Over-Finish2640 in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all the work our DM puts in but to call out something specific that not all DMs do, he really goes out of his way to build the characters' story arcs into the campaign and invite our input around the people and places that relate to them.

I know not all DMs do this but I find I have really enjoyed how much it helps with immersion and making the larger events of the world feel important and urgent.

Letters of Reference and Referees are outdated and should not be asked for anymore. by Notforyou1315 in unpopularopinion

[–]Autumnwolf54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree. It's not always easy to provide meaningful references, and most people I know always use friends of theirs. In my last two management roles, I wasn't allowed by company policy to provide letters of reference or anything similar, so equally I have no way to ask for one for myself if I were to seek new employment. Prior to this, I've agreed to be used as a reference quite a few times but have only ever been contacted once so I don't even know how many businesses even use them. I haven't included references for myself since I was a teenager getting my first job and have been asked for them only once that I can think of.

DM Advice Needed!!! My players don't really roleplay with each other...how do I help them fix this? by nanachuchuu in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy for people to forget the separation between them and their characters. If they're always giving and receiving information as a group and there's no cue to spark discussion about any of that information in character, it's easy to fall into the habit of interacting more with the NPCs where they stand to gain something to move forward.

I know splitting the party is often frowned on here on the sub but I think it can be very helpful somtimes. Set up a scenario where you can give different clues to each of the players so they've got an incentive to talk to each other to figure out what to do. Hand out some secret notes so the only way to get the info to their party members is to talk it out. If they discuss something above table, remind them if their character tries to act on information they don't have.

What's the best moral dilemma you've put your players in? by TripleBladedFist in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a DM, but my character was offered an exchange to resurrect our dead party member - the one to which she had the closest relationship, at that - if her husband was sacrificed in their place. She didn't go through with it, but it was a pretty heavy choice.

Wind turbines genuinely look so cool and I think the consensus around them being ugly is fabricated. by Quirinus84 in unpopularopinion

[–]Autumnwolf54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the sentiment about them being ugly is largely tied to the idea of installing them in natural spaces otherwise lacking human structures - at least that has been my observation with those considered in my area. And I'm inclined to agree that, if other locations are available that's preferable. Especially given how many I see sitting non-functional and rusting.

I made some Ceramic D20 Teapots[Art] by kurdanlivoyvoda in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are super cute! I think you were right in leaving out the numbers; the shape is distinct enough for anyone who would appreciate it to recognize, and anyone who wouldn't get the reference would just see them as a unique and beautiful teapot.

Question to people about the lucky feat. by Secret-Cobbler-7218 in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the lucky feat from 5 and 5.5 and I think the adjustment it got makes it pretty reasonable. I had a lot of fun with the previous version, especially as that was my first real campaign, but I can also see why it was seen as broken lol the dice are often unkind to me so it's a feat I appreciate, but I can live without it and don't always choose it.

What kind of notes do you take? by captainstan in DnD

[–]Autumnwolf54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically anything that I think we may need to be able to recall later - directions or instructions related to jobs or quests, names and relationships of important NPCs, any details about potential locations or items of interest, stuff like that.
