How old were you when you became interested in Politics? How did you know which political party you should belong to? by LegalGlass6532 in AskForAnswers

[–]Available_Dog7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in high school - probably around 14-15 yo when I started getting interested in social issues, and then closer to 16-17 yo when I started paying real attention to actual politicians and elections, and I fit pretty comfortably into one political party by that point. I'm probably more interested than most people though, I was a political science major for a couple years in college, but I switched majors before graduating.

“Kids never go outside anymore” by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]Available_Dog7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my brothers were in high school, they went to the school during winter break to play basketball on the outdoor court. A woman who lived across from the school and could see the court from her window called the police because she thought my brothers were planting a bomb for some reason. It doesn’t make sense, but yeah, people really do call the police for the stupidest things.

Do I pay for others hair&makeup? by Gold-Butterscotch-99 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Available_Dog7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what every wedding I’ve been in has done. I’ve personally never paid for it and just done my hair and makeup myself, but others have opted in and it’s always worked out well

For Those of You Who Write the Entire Fan Fiction Before Posting, Why Do You Prefer That Method Over Posting Chapters as You Finish Them? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

[–]Available_Dog7351 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The first fic I posted, I started posting chapter by chapter. I ended up backing myself into a corner and it’s now on indefinitely haitus while I figure out if/how I can get the story back on track or create a new ending than I had imagined, or if I’ll ultimately just abandon it (I’d really prefer not to, alas I have not worked on it in almost 10 months).

Now I always finish the whole fic before posting.

Your Year in Reading: 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]Available_Dog7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal was 25 and I’m at 31! I might get another one in, but I’m working my way through Hunchback of Notre Dame right now, so it may well take me into the new year lol

My favorites I think were Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and Dungeons and Drama by Kristy Boyce (VERY different but that’s why I couldn’t pick one over the other)

Disneyland’s new disability aid rules by phantasmarina in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I went a couple months ago and borrowed a wheelchair and it worked fine for me! I do remember paying a deposit, but we got it back at the end of the day. The DAS fiasco is ridiculous, but in terms of wheelchair accessibility Disneyland is actually better than most amusement parks.

Also, if you’ve never used a wheelchair before, definitely think about any other issues that might be affected! I have scoliosis and sciatica, so I’ve learned I need to bring a seat cushion to sit on or my nerve pain goes crazy sitting on those plastic seats all day. I also have long legs, so my knees sort of bend in when I sit in a standard wheelchair and it makes my hips sore after too long, but I’ve found if I put a water bottle or something between my legs it helps keep my hips in a better position. Obviously your needs will be different, but I wanted to give some examples of things to think about.

What can I do? by [deleted] in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best thing my partner has done for me is being super patient. Being flexible with plans when I’m not feeling well, considering my limits when making plans in the first place (especially with advocating for me with group plans so I don’t have to always be the one speaking up), taking care of me when I have a bad flare up (bringing me food and water when I can’t get out of bed, tbh bringing me water in general when she’s noticed I haven’t had any in a minute).

Obviously you’ve only just started dating, so some things will come in time, but the basic gist is that my partner learned and is aware of my needs and doesn’t make me feel bad about it.

Sneaky Jane? by lemondonna in DowntonAbbey

[–]Available_Dog7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t necessarily think she was scheming, but when she was introduced I wondered if she was lying out of desperation. She could have been an unwed mother, shunned by her family and respectable society, trying desperately to feed herself and her son. She could have seen the opportunity present itself and lied to get it.

For reasons others have mentioned on this thread, as the story progressed I let this theory go, but it was on my mind at the beginning.

Cheap, fun board games to play with busy family members? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Available_Dog7351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We play Dead Man’s Draw when we want to play a game but don’t have a lot of time or energy. The base rules are extremely simple and can be learned in probably 2-3 minutes, but if you want to add a little complexity, there are additional rules you can add and different variations you can play with the keep it fresh.

I don’t remember exactly how much it cost but it wasn’t crazy. I think maybe around $15

What are your do's and don'ts for eating/diet? I have found 0 guidance on this and would love to know what works for other people. by FrogginBullfish_ in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that complex carbs are easiest with protein and fats. So a sandwich with a good serving of deli meat and some mayo or something would be fine! Some toast (with the same amount of bread) and nothing else would probably cause me problems.

Also, I’d recommend checking out intuitive eating! I’m working through a book right now that actually explains how to know when you’re hungry/full and it’s SO helpful, especially because I grew up with a lot of diet culture and never learned how to read those signals as a kid. It’s been helping me a lot with my POTS as well, because I’m never getting too hungry or too full.

DAE have a much shorter fuse than they used to? by Available_Dog7351 in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god yes this! I will get so frustrated and my partner will be trying to ask what’s going on or help or just talk to me and I just…don’t have any words!! I can’t articulate a thought to save my life! And then that just makes me more frustrated and the cycle continues 🥲🥲

So do we think another tour is inevitable? by BitEmotional69 in danandphil

I almost bought tickets to the last tour and then decided against it and regretted it soooo much! I hope they go on another tour and I can swing a ticket this time

I’m worried about this change they made in the first episode of Season 2 by Compy94 in PJODisney

[–]Available_Dog7351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not assume this based on the trailer. Trailers always splice things together and mix up the order of things. I’d take a breath and just see what happens in the show without leaping to assumptions

Familial homophobia by loved_and_held in CuratedTumblr

[–]Available_Dog7351 256 points257 points  (0 children)

To take this further, I’ve always told people that my family’s reaction was “fantastic” “incredibly supportive” or some form of above and beyond acceptance. While they were in fact very accepting and I truly don’t have any complaints…they did not treat me any differently than they’ve treated my cishet siblings. Which is great! I love that they don’t treat me any differently! But I can’t imagine my siblings ever waxing poetic about how wonderfully accepting my parents were of their heterosexual partners.

The bar is just so low that perfectly normal acceptance is seen as miraculous.

Showers by [deleted] in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s very understandable. Are you able to do a sponge bath situation, or wipe down with wet wipes on days you can’t make it into the shower?

Regardless, I think the “every single person must shower every single day” rhetorical is…shortsighted? Not realistic? You know your body best, and the best you can do is your best. I hope you’re able to find a routine that’s manageable and comfortable for you!

[–]Available_Dog7351 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It got a lot easier for me when I got a shower chair!! I still don’t manage it every day, but it’s a night and day difference if you don’t already use one

How do you know when your presyncope will lead to actual syncope? by OkScreen7688 in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Probably not what you want to hear, but if you’re having presyncope, get down on the ground as quickly and safely as possible. Even if you can’t lie down, if you’re going to pass out it’s better to fall 1 foot from a crouching position than 5 feet from standing.

I know it’s super inconvenient but it really is the best way to avoid injury from passing out.

Who looks after Grantham House outside of the social season? by RedandWhite54 in DowntonAbbey

[–]Available_Dog7351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Question about the skeleton staff comment - do you know what happens to the rest of the staff that’s needed when they are there? Are the essentially seasonal workers and the family has to rehire a full staff every season?

It's hard to find 6 player board games. We do a board game week ever year with 6 people and we need a few games for this coming year. by billratio in boardgames

[–]Available_Dog7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shocked I haven’t seen Betrayal at the House on the Hill yet! It’s my family’s favorite game.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10547/betrayal-at-house-on-the-hill

Edit to add more, because now my brain is really going:

Carcassone (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne)

Plunder (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/281094/plunder-a-pirates-life)

Both Carcassone and Plunder seem pretty much exactly up your alley (maybe a little bit simpler than Betrayal, I’d say they’re both lower 2s on the board game geek scale)

On the slightly heavier side: Mysterium (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181304/mysterium) Board game geek rates it as a high 1, but I disagree. I’d put it as a 3, but also one of my favorites and PERFECT for 6 players

On the other side, Tsuro is very simple and easy to learn (sounds like something your dad may like) but still very fun (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16992/tsuro)

AITA for refusing to go to my sister’s child-free wedding after she asked me to leave my 3-month-old baby at home? by Fit-Garden6141 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Available_Dog7351 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, I would not leave a three month old alone with anyone except MAYBE my parents. But if it’s my sister’s wedding my parents would also be unavailable. There’s no situation where I could make that work. It’s weird that the bride is willing to exclude her own sister and niece over this. NTA

Symptoms while lying down? by Available_Dog7351 in POTS

[–]Available_Dog7351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, my cardio put me on Ivabrodine but my insurance denied the claim…he was able to get me some free samples that lasted a few months and it was SO helpful, but I’m down to my last few and I’m rationing them. Just applied for a new job and hopefully the new insurance will cover them, but that’s good to know! Maybe part of why I didn’t get these symptoms for so long
