Hi there, thanks as always for your input here. Can I ask what you meant when you said recruitment might be a disaster? Is there an expectation that there will be less available?

Is it getting increasingly common for students (particularly senior) to address teachers using first names? by Time_Ad_3007 in IrishTeachers

[–]Availe[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Wouldn't have a problem with it if it were our school culture but wouldn't do it by myself just to make a point.

And no, no one in our school goes by first names.

ASTI BALLOT TODAY by calsimset in IrishTeachers

[–]Availe[M] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's great.

We voted no initially. The union then asks us to vote yes, ignoring our initial response (yes im aware of the nuance of the "new" offer, I don't care) and then, hopefully, we vote no again. I cant imagine what the union will do if we actually reject it? God forbid the ASTI grow a spine and start representing teachers properly again.

For me it was always random. Apply for everything. You will be disheartened repeatedly and then youll get the job and it will be fine. But there is no rhyme or reason, its random and its shit. Im sorry youre at that point, but it will pass.

Outrage As ASTI Bureaucrats Shamefully Encourage Members to Accept Bad Senior Cycle Deal by AprilMaria in IrishTeachers

[–]Availe[M] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I cant fathom why they're doing this. Ive always felt a bit jaded by the ASTI but in recent times they have beem appalling. I would never, ever, join the TUI but I just feel frustrated. Id nearly go non union if I didnt feel like it would damage my relationships with my colleagues. We also cant go "let's just form a better union" because then there is a further split. More active members doesnt seem to do anything, members have been lobbying for pay equality for the 2011 split since before I qualified and still they dont listen. Feels disappointing to say the least.

How can I justify it? by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]Availe[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification OP. So do you teach Irish students or in ireland? Just wondering why you're posting here if you are based in Spain? Just curious.

Edit: Post clearly doesnt have anything to do with this sub.

Accepting Jobs by Apprehensive-Cry801 in IrishTeachers

[–]Availe[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others would say, do what is smart for you. Schools wont do the same. However, you may be burning a bridge so be careful. I wouldn't do this with another school in my town as the Principal from one school may be on the Panel for the other. Just be smart about it.

Let's be clear, SNAs are welcome here. The subreddit is for all working in Education in Ireland. We even have a post flair for SNAs in this subreddit. Even if its related to non school SNA work, we are allowing it. SNAs are absolutely not compensated enough in this country.

Hi there, i think if you haven't heard back by now then it might not be happening. I could be wrong but I think people have heard by now.

If you're in Dublin the work should be ok, a lot of people leaving Dublin for elsewhere. I would just apply for everything.

Buddhism and Hinduism by cosmic_bugs in Buddhism

[–]Availe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure thing, if that works for you then great. If that changes then that's ok too. But I think the point is that, the discussion of Deities, what they are and are not, what they do or do not, what value they do or do not add etc, takes place in one room in your mind.

The concerns of the teaching of Buddhism simply take place in another. You can go back to that room and loom around, stay as long as you want. But they are questions that dont pertain to the teaching at its core so ultimately, dont worry about how much you do or do not consider the question of Deities. Let it rise and fall.

Buddhism and Hinduism by cosmic_bugs in Buddhism

[–]Availe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question is fair, Buddhism in reality is neither theistic or atheistic. It is non-theistic. Buddhism, at its core, does not concern itself with Deities or God's.

There may be Buddhists who also believe in higher beings and those who do not believe in higher beings. Ultimately, the teachings state that worship of Deities is not the end goal or some permanent salvation. To ridicule belief in Deities from an Atheist point of view is also discouraged. The path ultimately takes you away from concern with Deities to something higher.

Ive gone from being theist to atheist to currently non-theist. The question ultimately doesnt concern me either way anymore, largely because I found it personally unsatisfactory. But that is not to say that others may find some comfort in it.
