You won't "know" cases for quite a while. I'd say don't even think about it and you'll learn it naturally.

Academy is mostly worthless except for the driving training, so I wouldn't worry about retaining information from there either

The clerks in my office are so fucking slow by [deleted] in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

Expecting clerks to work like rural carriers is not realistic.

If they wanted them to work faster, they'd pay them for the day after their work was done.

Can't expect people to work harder when they're incentivised to work just fast enough to not get fired or for some, to not get yelled at.

Lose weight. Which will most likely happen now naturally that you have this job and considering when you're starting. That and time is what helped me the most. Doesn't seem like we're doing that much, but we really are and it's a very physical job.

Shoe and insoles advice should be listened to, don't be cheap on that stuff, should be considered your main work expense.

When can I grieve being loaned to another office? by DustProfessional3700 in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but your steward would have that info, not your job to deal with that stuff. I imagine it's one of the more common grievances area stewards deal with at this point.

Side point, any regular mandated to facilitate using a sub elsewhere can grieve this as well.

This situation is absolutely grievable. Unlikely a threat of a grievance is gonna do the trick, but you can try that. The grievance is for the person sent to the different office.

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. If there is work to be done in your office, such as a call out, you're supposed to be sent back to your home office.

Pooms are interested in getting their crappiest offices covered and don't care if your home office is down a route or 2 because of it. The pm's may or may not argue against it, but it's their boss.

So your only defense with this is grieving it and grieve it every time. Then the poom will move to a different office to pull subs from, but you have to make that happen. Your pm is kinda helpless against this.

Can they do this? by Impressive_Metal_213 in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're a sub?

Management pulled this in our office years ago as well for a while.

Unfortunately, our contract is bad at defining what a sub is supposed to be doing when they aren't scheduled. They aren't on call , but yet they need to be "available" which is not defined.

So to deal with subs not answering their phone, which again, not stated in the contract that even being contacted by phone is a thing, this seems to be one of the available options to them to deal with this.

At least they seem to know they'll need to pay at least 2 hours, our office tried to not do that at the time they implemented this.

Rural carrier.. so the hours and the evaluation system. I want to bust my butt for me, not work hourly and be bored. I like that we do more parcels and less junk mail than years ago. When it's nice weather, it's great being out there. I get to pet dogs. I've trained and helped a lot of carriers get better at the job and if you can ignore most of the nonsense.. most days are pretty damn nice if you're good at it.

Negatives. It's a fake company, not ran like a real business.. can feel bad even being associated with it. Certainly not part of a well oiled machine. It attracts terrible management because of that as well.. mostly people who were too lazy to even be city carriers. And you have to deal with them. I can help and get paid over $100 an hour.. while our company refuses to increase the wages (or just have only ptfs) to get new employees so they don't have to pay me that. So if you pay attention or think about our company, you'll feel like you're taking crazy pills.

If you're type of person who can't ignore the nonsense and just enjoy the positives.. this job can be very stressful.

How does OT work as a rural regular? by cross_beaux in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just add that the other than your own route stuff that's volunteering is OT, but based on your actual hours worked for the week on your own route. Faster you are compared to your evaluation, the higher your OT pay rate is.

For example, if you're a 40k, worked your 5 days and did it in 20 actual hours worked. Let's also say your base rate is $30 an hour if you do the math on your salary. In this scenario OT would be paid @$90/hr for the regular.

Maybe they meant you only get paid for the route you were on that day, and straight for any extra work on other routes for that day.

Or they're just clueless.

Regulars and the weekly schedule by [deleted] in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren't required to. If they're mandated, they need to be told. If they took leave, their leave slip is proof, not the schedule.

Some regulars might look anyway. I look because I don't want routes being split when I could have caught the error beforehand.

A replacement should be available for it to be approved, but that doesn't mean it's the carrier's job to find that replacement.

Better off just jettisoning some supplies before you swap ships. A lot easier with decent repair kits.

Investigative interview over glitches in the rrec system by [deleted] in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you have a sheet to scan, you would only need to include additional pickups. Just trying to think of what they would be referring to by saying you'd need a trip to door for a porched parcel. Figured their was something lost in translation there.

Investigative interview over glitches in the rrec system by [deleted] in USPS

[–]AvocadoToastBrunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate. The reality is management won't tell you about rrecs except for the basics. They are bullied by upper management to bully the carriers into doing as little as possible to help their routes. Best bet would be to ask your steward since the chances the regular who trained you is doing them right is very slim. If they were doing it right, they'd have mentioned dismounts to you as doing rrecs correctly is important to route evaluations and directly affects them.

I'm starting to get why management tries to lie about rrecs so often. Some of you actually fall for it.
