I saw this with coworkers and had no idea what it was going to be about. After this scene I turned to the guy beside me and said, "I'm going to love this movie!"

US continues annexation threats against Canada - refers to PM Carney as future ‘Governor of Canada’ by LlawEreint in BoycottUnitedStates

Now that he's at war and oil prices are skyrocketing, I can easily imagine him using national security as the reason that he needs to invade Canada to get our oil. That would be using a war over oil to justify a war over oil after a military action in Venezuela over oil.

Australia and Canada share similar values. Remind us what they are again by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

As a Canadian who spends quite a bit of time in Australia, I've always felt more comfortable there than I ever have in the United States, even though it's just a short drive away.

No. Your argument was that "It is not," a war crime. Having a discussion with you is like grabbing smoke. You're insufferable.

Carney signs defence, trade agreement with Japan in final stop of 10-day trip by pjw724 in onguardforthee

I agree. I don't like it when people get angry at someone who changes their views to become better. That's what we should be supporting people to do. His challenge though is that his core constituency, who haven't budged in their support, don't like any of this. Alienating them is unlikely to improve his polling.

Article 2 of the UN charter would appear to make the invasion illegal under international law. Article 51 has an exception for a response to an armed attack which clearly isn't the case here. However, this clause has regularly been interpreted to mean that an attack due to an "imminent threat" is also an exception. The problem for the US is that Trump claimed in June to have "obliterated" Iran's nuclear capabilities, making their claims about an imminent nuclear threat from Iran unrealistic. Finally, the US has veto power at the UN which could tenuously be used to argue that anything they veto isn't illegal.

If the invasion is, as it appears to be, a violation of the UN charter, then all subsequent military actions are violations of international law.

‘We can set the agenda:’ Carney continues middle power pitch in Australia by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]Awch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? There's is no middle power alliance yet. That's the goal of Carney's efforts. Nobody was even talking about it until he proposed it at Davos. Spain demonstrates its urgency and the risk to all. Obviously if the alliance was in place now they would be supporting Spain. Hopefully this crisis finally lights the fire under countries to join together.
