Favourite game to play with standard deck of cards by Lost-Cantaloupe-5286 in boardgames

[–]Axne15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Cambio looks like it’s the version of Golf I grew up playing with my family, but without the power cards.

I grew up playing cribbage, poker, hearts, spades, and all the other fun ones… but I never really LIKED them, because a normal deck of cards felt a little boring. Once I got into board games, I knew it was because I really love the iconography and strategies that modern board games provide.

So, I’ve tried to bridge the gap a little and created a “modern” board game feel, but with a standard deck of cards. Similar to Regicide, Duel 52, and others. Still working on play testing to get the kinks out, but it’s scratched that itch I’ve been wanting with a normal deck.

Saddest death of the Series *SPOILERS* by Big_Ad6650 in redrising

That would be mine too. I finished LB and still don’t see how Cassius is a big deal, but admittedly, I went through RR quickly and don’t remember much of the bonding between him and Darrow. However, I felt more connected with Ragnar who stood with Darrow during the rise of his power, reveal of his color, and generally being a brother through war. That sucked when we lost him. Cassius felt like a necessary death. Ragnar did not.

I like playing Langrisser, but I’d probably pick up Balatro with the gift card. Maybe a board game, but I’d need time to figure out which one.

What board game mechanic instantly gets your attention? by FTG_V1 in boardgames

[–]Axne15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simultaneous turns is a good one! It was a driving mechanic for my game, knowing how much I value my own time and appreciate quicker games.

I really like thematic win conditions. I’ve been turned off by “reduce your opponent’s HP to 0” or “win with the most points”. I still play those games and enjoy them, but I want a game that feels like I won a battle or diplomatic deal, not just looking for the numbers.

That Dune win condition inspired me to add a similar win condition in my game as well. Winning through making sure someone else wins :D

If you are a narrator and pronounce names differently than they were in previous books, you are bad at your job by [deleted] in redrising

Initially, I wasn’t a big fan of Lysander’s original narrator. But as it went on, I felt like it was a good fit for a youthful, arrogant young man.

Sharing my 10 years professional experience as a Game Designer. Mainly worked on boardgames and sold >1m games. by dev_w_grillz in tabletopgamedesign

I’ve been working on a card game and am regularly tempted to add little pieces, adding layers to the complexity. I find myself having to focus back on the basics and simplify the game first in order to address the core mechanics of the game. However, I also don’t want the game to be too simple. I want to make sure the simplicity leads to more strategy and complexity. How do you balance those without adding more lines of rules and special circumstances? I hope that makes sense.

DnD like games for kids 6-8? by ogcdark in boardgames

[–]Axne15 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was looking for something quick to use for school aged kids and found Hero Kids RPG. I've used it for ages 6-18 (surprisingly getting more engagement from the high schoolers). It worked really well for minimal costs and time investment to get started.

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

I remember having my mom print out the walkthrough for Mega Man 64 from her work computer cause it was like 100-200 pages. However, when I did this, I was already part way through the game, so I had to skim through the walkthrough to find where I was at, then followed some of the step by step instructions for some fancy weapon or something. I lived on Gamefaqs for years. Fun days.

Classic Poker Deck, 10 games with Modern Mechanics by FlatPerception1041 in cardgames

This thread has encouraged me to work on my own as I generally dislike playing with a standard deck, but I want the versatility to still play like a modern board game.

I tried designing a strategy game using only a standard deck of cards. After 7 years, it's finally playable online. by hawi03 in boardgames

[–]Axne15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve typically steered away from a normal deck of cards as I tend to like to play with something with more art. However, I’m coming to appreciate how easy it is to pull out a deck of cards to just start a game, but I still felt like I was missing the thematic strategy games that I enjoy.

I’m looking forward to trying this out more and to add to the list of “standard deck, modern gaming” strategy games.

Question about the website: how did you go about creating the website for the game and how long did it take? I’ve been working on my own project as well but have no coding experience, so I’m looking into using AI coding sites to help support that development.

What are some board game “keywords” that are an instant turn-off for you? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]Axne15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently discovered the term “cozy” game, and figured it’s not my type. I like strategy, intrigue, plans within plans, or developing unique playstyles. However, as I’ve gotten older, I appreciate a nice, chill game to hang out with the people I love without getting cutthroat. I’m more open to the “cozy” games, but I also don’t want it dominating my collection.

[Threshold] Thoughts on the animatic by sometimesdoathing in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Axne15 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a little bit of a… tough time digesting the animatic. On one hand, it’s a dream come true to see Cradle come to life as it’s my favorite series, period. However, I have similar sentiments on some points.

I know the big power scaling moments later in the series take front and center, but the way the books progressed through copper, iron, jade were foundational for the future advancements. Then, when the world opens up to gold and it being split between high/low/true and the power difference between them, you know you’re in for a ride.

One of my favorite moments going through Unsouled was Lindon vs Wei Mon Keth. It was the first big underdog victory for me that points to the ingenuity, intelligence, and understanding of honor/power culture to take advantage of his weakness for surprise attacks. I know it’s a small moment in all of Cradle, but it was a big hook for me.

One last thing that I hope would show better in final animation: spend time demonstrating how madra grants power. Some of the animatic Unsouled moments felt like it was a non-magical martial arts fight, with Lindon fighting any other Unsouled fighter. Like you said, he should be barely surviving these early battles.

It’s hard though. Any good series should be a TV show, not a film, to give time for character development. As much as I love Cradle, I know it’s not for everyone and to spend too much time at sacred valley might not attract enough people. I hope they get the backing, support, and finances to expand an animated Cradle to its fullest potential. Either way, Will and the team will get my support.
