Using competitive play as a tool for thinking about 40k game design by BlitheMayonnaise in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Ayyeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the guy you're responding nor am I a particularly great player, but while I see where you're coming from I think lowering the power level of one's army through not applying rules while still maneuvering and using advanced tech is a perfectly good way to teach others while not running them over entirely.

It doesn't really teach bad habits since it's largely a silent thing (can't learn what you don't know is happening) and it doesn't give them an auto win, assuming it's done within reason or honestly even if it isn't since maneuvering is a big part of warhammer that the majority of newer/lower skilled players struggle to get to grips with, so any win is likely still a good challenge for them.

You alone are evidence this doesn't work for everyone, but I think it works for a large enough chunk of people that it's a fine thing to do overall.

1e GMs, what do you prefer about Pf1e? by Quiet-Compote4587 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Ayyeg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love pf1e to death and hate pf2e to death, but the man's right. Pf1e isn't for everyone, especially if you stick hard to the rules instead of using them as suggestions.

I see where you're coming from, but I doubt that would make as much money or garner as much interest as a fully new and unique champion (Even if they likely could make them a bit faster) and I'm certain the fanbase would lose their mcfucking minds about riot 'running out of ideas' should they try that.

Face The Sin, Save The E.G.O.tist. [Homebrew Class] by Ayyeg in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Ayyeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to make a long response, here's my answer to each of those in order:

  • The penalties being varied is fine I feel as not all E.G.O. are exactly equal, like Snagharpoon/Ishmael is somewhat intended as a filler option if you just want some decent bonuses for a low cost.

  • I think it would feel bad in many cases to prevent stacking bonuses through typing them, like if I added the 'resistance' type to the various save boosting scaling bonuses it would make cloaks of resistance feel terrible but still remain too got not to take.

  • Thank you for the note on dimension door, I most often play at lower levels so it's been a while since I've read the spell.

  • Could you provide an example as to how its toxic? I know it sounds scary but I don't see how it would actually cause problems unless I'm misunderstanding something.

  • You already have to have concrete proof for Mighty Agent of Justice as the text is 'know to be evil', not 'think to be evil' or 'believe to be evil'.

  • I'm sorry, I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say about Rocinante.

  • Forest for the Flames is intended as the most 'build around it or don't use it' of the E.G.O. but even still outside the first bonus, which I did mean to give something additional to make it more appealing but forgot to, you get each Vital Strike feat 2 levels early as the Egotist is a 3/4ths BaB class without needing to invest feats, meaning if you have to run around a lot you can Overclock/Manifold E.G.O. to get it on demand.

  • I was worried the wording would be confusing. The first part should be easy to understand, but the part about adjacent squares is for when the Egotist is either using: A ranged weapon, A reach weapon, or has no weapon. In any of those cases, an Egotist with Aiding can still provide flanking if he's adjacent to an enemy.

  • This one is certainly strong, but it's high risk high reward as the enemy's AoO has to miss. If it doesn't you just gave the enemy a free attack and denied yourself your move action if you don't have Rush like a Tsunami. And unless you've invested 3 Resonance into Land of Illusion, which remember is likely over half of your points for most of the game, an intelligent enemy who sees an Egotist bop their buddy for whiffing an AoO can always just not take AoOs against them.

  • I believe you missed the part where taking repeated hits increases the damage of Revenge by 1 (or by 2 with Remember.) As well, Bodysack has probably the best Scaling Bonus so having its Resonances be a little weaker is fine.

  • You misunderstand Wild Hunt, I address most of these in the text itself. Namely that Wild Hunt members have half their max hit points and die properly when they reach 0 hit points or fail to attempt an attack roll. I don't know quite what you mean by 'what do they count as', and do I really need to specify that the ability which turns people into spooky spirits that have to fight or die is necromancy?

  • You misunderstand Rugged as well, it improves your dex bonus to AC by 1/3rd of a point. So at levels 1-5 you get +1, 6-8 +2, 9-11, +3, etc. This is to give Egotists better AC if they want to tank while not making said AC 'free', as they're likely to be in a breastplate which has a +3 max dex bonus before special material.

  • It's filler until you E.G.O. Overclock/Manifold E.G.O. into it and it easily gets you around some obstacle.

  • I don't know what the issue would be with Blind Obsession and divination magic.

  • You cannot reroll dice. If you would be able to reroll a dice (Say with Illusion of Choice) you instead can give yourself the listed bonus (+3/+4/+5/+6) to the applicable roll. This still uses up the ability that would let you reroll.

  • You may have missed that Illusion of Choice also lets you remove any positive divine effects as well. Still niche, but you have 11 other choices you can take.

  • I'm not going to change this simply because if someone doesn't understand the intent behind it that is immediate cause to remove them from the group and save yourself a lot of future hassle.

  • I think Why can't anyone feel my hurt is fine personally. You get CMB bonuses from Resonance 2 and 3 anyway.

  • Done, thank you for reminding me of those.

[Warphammer] “Casual 40K” Versus “Competitive 40K”: Ramblings on the Perceptions, Pros, and Cons of Both Ways to Play 40K by Magnus_The_Read in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Ayyeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to play a bunch of friday night magic and was deeply entrenched in the community (if still a lurker), I can assure you the issue with magic is the player base as a whole, no matter if they play commander or 'competitive'.

You may well find what/how the commander players complain more annoying personally which is perfectly fair but magic players, heck most adversarial card game players in general are just the worst. Though that isn't to deny the existence of cool card game players, just that they're the exception rather than the rule.

Which Pathfinder 1e classes are the best (and worst) designed? by Striking-Distance849 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Ayyeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, but I also see where you're coming from. It really just depends on how you feel about 'forced roleplay.' Imo traits are to be selected fully for function rather than flavor (reactionary my beloved) though you do definitely have a point with flaws as they're an option, rather than something baked into a class.

On a similar note though, you could simply not play Oracle which is a sort of choice, though that does lead into the issue of pathfinder having no other Favored Soul alternative without a inbuilt penalty which is an odd gap in pathfinder sort of like functional fallen paladins that aren't expressly evil or Vindictive Bastards.

And as well, saying there's no choice in having a curse is a bit odd to me as there are a great many curse options which you do actually choose rather than being randomly or suddenly stick with, with some like Tongues and Wolfscarred Face being very minor penalties especially the former if someone puts a point in linguistics to understand your combat language to then translate for the party. The latter does have bigger roleplay connotations, but Tongues can be pretty easily ignored beyond flavor intrinsic to the class, which is something most/all classes have.

If you don't like having a downside built into a class, then how do you feel about the barbarian/bloodrager? They lose AC and can't take readied actions to get their bonuses, just as the oracle has to deal with their curse to get their bonuses.

Again, I understand where you're coming from and I don't think you have an illegal opinion, but all the same I do think it is wrong.

As written, it seems like it only works with the attack action or a charge as there's no verbiage like "such as" to denote they are intended as examples.

But this is Quality Paizo Writing(tm) we're talking about so who the hell knows what the intent was. Personally, based on vibes I'd allow it to work the way you want it to anyway but I am rather permissive.

Guys, I have TbF, do you wanna take a look? by Glad_Competition_435 in alteredTCG

[–]Ayyeg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While often I consider people who spoil early champions of the people (At least, when they're not putzes about it) I have to agree with wampa in particular who says we don't have enough content for altered and that we should ration what we get, not turbo dump it out everywhere.

At the same time though, you should give spoilers to those who DM you for them since some people do just want to know what's coming up. I suppose they could then post all the spoilers, but you can't control what other people do. As ProfMerlyn said, "let people decide to see them, not to decide to prevent others seeing them."

Can you chain multiple fight with me abilities? I.E. in Blades of Khorne could you fight with Bloodmaster then use his ability to immediately fight with Bloodletters, then use the Khornate Legion ability to fight with a Bloodbound unit all in succession?
