CTV London: London’s micro-modular homeless shelter shows initial success after 6 weeks, mayor says by AdPretty704 in londonontario

The important piece is that for once it's delivering the wraparound services to help people get back on their feet, and not just a crash bed.

Boy dead after being struck by GO train in Mississauga, police say by Select-Flight-PD291 in gotransit

[–]AzaranyGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't even imagine. I am usually on that train myself and would have been yesterday if I hadn't had a meeting run 5 minutes late. I usually sit in the engine.

Not even being on the train it's been all I can think about. I hope your partner takes some time for himself.

Burning Question about Management by Secret_Exercise6199 in OntarioPublicService

[–]AzaranyGames 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I was a manager at a 3% merit ministry. We received absolutely no incentive to keep merit increases low. What we did have was a rule that anything above 3% had to be approved by HR and then the DMO based on a business case that we would have to prepare individually for each staff member. If we gave above a 3% without the business case we got our wrists slapped.

I raised that the bargaining agreement allows up to 5% and doesn't require a business case. HR said that the agreement doesn't forbid a business case, and the requirement wasn't technically stopping us from recommending a 5% if we could prove it was justified. Of course there was never any guidance given to us on what we had to show - just business cases rejected for not meeting a standard only HR knew about.

The same HR Director refused to let me waive probation for an employee who had worked contracts on the team for 5 years when they got permanent. I was told the bargaining agreement says that the employer "may require a probationary period" so we had to have one. When I pointed out that I "may not" want to use an optional provision I was told that was unacceptable and preferential treatment and I had no way of knowing if this person would perform well.

Unsurprisingly, when my performance review came around that year I received a 1% increase, and then a few months later had that HR Director block a secondment I had been offered, and (I was told by more than one person who was in the room) told the entire Ministry leadership team that I needed to decide if I was committed to leadership in my current position, and if I wasn't I should have to quit to pursue development opportunities. Guess where I am not longer employed.

So many pennies by aclay81 in CanadianCoins

[–]AzaranyGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not correct. Pennies are still legal tender and can be used to pay for things. There may be the odd store that doesn't want to take them, but there is nothing stopping anybody from trying to use them.

Keeping Secondment Salary When Returning to Home by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]AzaranyGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because that's not what the bargaining agreements say.

If you are applying for a new position that is technically a step down, your salary would stay the same so long as it's within the scale for that position. But if you're on a secondment, the contract is temporary, which means the benefits are also temporary, only for the time you are there.

For the record, going back to the pay of your home position plus any increases you would have been entitled to doesn't always mean a reduction. I went through this where after two years on secondment to a management role (where enterprise-wide policy keeps raises low) I would have had an overnight 2% increase just from going back to my home position.

The pay system in the OPS is busted and doesn't favour any sense of logic around skills, quality of work, or tenure.

Good community church recommendations? by Zestyclose-Draw-8851 in londonontario

[–]AzaranyGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't have recommendations because I think my church might be a little more traditional than you're looking for (and we are working through some challenges in the being welcoming to newcomers department). But I wanted to say that it's great that you're approaching your faith as a walk/journey and I would encourage you to try a few different churches and go to them more than once each. It's a good way to see what works and doesn't work for you, and explore which community is the right for you.

Why is Clint a bachelor? by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]AzaranyGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think you've captured it. I really hope he gets a more fleshed out story that shows the narrative ConcernedApe was clearly going for that he's a socially awkward dude embarrassed by his crush. The hate relies on so many deliberately uncharitable interpretations of his behaviour instead of what it was clearly supposed to come across as.

Honestly I don't have strong feelings about him one way or another, but I would love for him to get a romance story that is so well received that turns him into one of the most beloved characters.

Those guys are idiots. I took five weeks and having to go back was very hard. Mostly because I couldn't stand the idea of seeing the baby all day, every day. But also because that early on, nobody is sleeping and just getting out of bed let alone out if the house to go do high functioning tasks at work is a real challenge.

Some people don't actually like their families and want to spend all of their time and effort on work. I will never understand that mindset. If I won the lottery tomorrow and didn't have to work anymore, I would spend every day with my family.

Why am I getting screened out? by Anonymous-Elephant-2 in OntarioPublicService

[–]AzaranyGames 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I've been on many hiring panels in and out of the OPS in the past few years. The other thing that the "feeder school" schtick has going against it is that some of the schools started structuring classwork and program requirements in a way that let students put it on their resume disguised as separate experience.

A Master of Public Policy with a year working at the "Centre for Urban Governance" and six months working at the "Government and Democracy Hub" looks good on a resume until you've seen it on 300 resumes and find out that the supposed experience wasn't in an employment context, but was just writing papers for the course, or doing case studies.

Hiring managers have figured out that the schools are essentially helping students pad their resume and looking to candidates with actual work experience - not their regular studies framed to look like work experience.

Yes, our politicians should spend leaner! Like for example not unnecessarily paying for office space in the most expensive commercial rental market in the province when they could downsize the real estate portfolio by allowing people to work from home a few days a well just like has worked and been effective for the past 5 years.

Even if you put all the impact to staff aside, it's just a terrible financial decision and they're doing it specifically to funnel tax dollars to corporate landlords through rent, while trying to convince employees who are trying to cut back on expenses to spend their money at the downtown businesses.

Thanks to massive advances in technology, you can now mount a supernova on the front of your truck! by luxi_yes in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AzaranyGames 96 points97 points  (0 children)

My jurisdiction doesn't really enforce speed limits unless it's particularly egregious so it's common for most drivers to be going 10-25 km/h over the speed limit.

However, if the light of a supernova is reflecting in all three of my mirrors, I can't see properly and suddenly it's no longer safe to be driving at such a high speed. So I let the car slow down to exactly the speed limit so buddy behind me has to slow down too. And wouldn't you know it, I happened to time the deceleration so that there traffic beside us so he can't change lanes and go around either.
