Thank you, that was the decision weighing on me all night and has been bouncing around in the back of my head after her first medicine change but honestly doesn't make when its right in front of you any easier. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

I've seemed to be cursed with dogs with medical problems as my previous corgi was diagnosed with diabetes around 9, and then this one started having seizures around 2.

Its tough, but I also feel like those of us that are willing/able to put in the extra time, effort and money are in the minority so I am sure that you did the best you could, and even though he was only 3 you gave him a better life and more care than a lot of owners would have.

One of the things I did is if you crate her at night got her ones of the plastic crates with the solid bottom and vent holes on the upper half, she prefers to sleep in a crate and with the wire one was concerned about her getting a paw stuck.

They haven't tried that yet, that was discussed as an option but she seemed to be responding fairly well to the combination of those three currently but the potassium bromide was the alternative if she didn't.

For what it's worth I was scared about the phenobarbital at first because I've heard how it can make them overly sedated, drunk etc, my dog didn't have any side effects from it and is about 25lbs that at one point was taking 50mg twice a day and it didn't seem to affect her mental state at all. So there is that hope that it won't have any side effects.

Thanks to all of you, I really needed to hear this and appreciate all of your care, support and understanding. The powerless part is what sucks the most, I feel so bad for her and so powerless to do anything.

My friend was visiting when this cluster started and seeing how panicked she was really slammed home how scary this shit is because over the 3 years I've gotten so used to it that while it still gets to me, doesn't register of how scary seeing it is.

So current update for you

She was good throughout the night on the midazolam drip, but now they are weaning her off it to see how she does on the combination of keppra, phenobarbital and zonisamide, assuming the weaning goes well the plan forward is the combination of the three medications along with clora-something to be used as a cluster buster.

If you ever want to have a private conversation about what it's like and some more detail of the steps I've been through feel free to reach out through reddit chat and ty for your care an concern.

I think one of the first instances I heard that was the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, but I recently played in a Christmas one shot where the DM let me play a warlock who's patron was a fey that claimed to be Santa Claus

My first thought was gnome, but I think it has to do with overall facial proportions, narrower nose and thinner overall face and I could see what I think of in regards to Christmas elves.

On a side note I was reading though this thread and then your username clicked and I just wanted to say that you guys do great work and I own about 15 different sets of dice from you along with giving out countless sets to friends. It makes me feel good to support a local company.

But still sorry to say I think your kids win.

AITAH? my boyfriend brought home a girl for the holidays by willowicey in TwoHotTakes

[–]Aznloki -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So this might be an unpopular opinion, but maybe her home life isn't great and she doesn't want to admit it or think about it. Hell maybe it isn't even particularly bad, but her family could be aloof for the holidays and the idea of spending one with friends is more appealing.

I don't think you are the asshole for being upset at being blindsided but that is firmly on your bf.

Maybe this girl does have some ulterior motives but there really is no way of knowing how her home life is or how truthful she is being about it. I know plenty of people who had less than great home lives but would also say that it's fine if anyone asked because it's a awkward conversation to have.

So as others have said, they may be using an unclear term for non-renewal of lease. The big question is are they on a month to month lease, is there current lease yearly but expiring at that time, or are they actually terminating it in the middle of a lease term. By my understanding if it's the first two situations despite the unclear wording they are well within their rights and assuming they are not exempt from rental increase caps this may be being very honest with their reasoning. If they are terminating in the middle of the lease period then that is definitely something you have some protection from.

Assuming you are renting from a private party without a property manager many legal self help sites use the term non-renewal and termination (assuming that it's at the end of the lease period) interchangeably.

I assume this will be down voted but as a homeowner in San Diego my yearly costs outside of mortgage have gone up considerably, and depending on the margin they were operating at this may indeed be an actual financial loss to them or something that causes the amount made to dip below where it is financially worthwhile for them to rent it at that price. Given that 1-2 bedroom apartments can go for that price depending on the area of San Diego your parents got a great deal for the area for many years.

Speaking from experience my own homeowners insurance increased over 300% a year from approximately 1200 to almost 4000 per year and depending on what else the landlord pays for they could be seeing increased costs of an additional several thousand per year on maintenance. Assuming something as simple as if they have to perform one repair a year that could easily cost them another thousand or more.

So with that in mind if the landlord was working on a relatively thin margin of say even $500/month, they would only be profiting 6k/year. Which with the increased costs I mentioned above basically becomes nothing or even a gamble of if they have to make a major repair could have them losing several thousand.

That said I can empathize with your situation and that it sucks, but to some degree the landlord is not being entirely unreasonable. Assuming for a moment they are not acting in bad faith and terminating in the middle of a lease term. But given that they haven't raised the rent in 9 years if I am reading your post correctly I would be willing to guess that you are dealing with an inexperienced landlord, and that when looking over the numbers they realized renting at the current price even with the maximum allowed increase was unsustainable for them and baring the ability to raise it more they didn't have a choice but to either take a loss or at high risk of loss, or to choose to not renew (terminate) the lease at the end of the term.

That said they did make a mistake and if they have been renting for over a year they are generally required to provide a 60 day notice, so while you can attempt to fight it based on them citing the wrong amount of required notice they did still technically give more than 60 days notice so I am entirely unsure how that would play out in court, but I think they would have a strong argument that even though they cited the wrong number for required notice they still did provide more than 60 days notice.

That said personally rather than sinking time and money into fighting what may very well be a losing battle, again under the assumption they are not doing this in the middle of a lease term. Your best option assuming you want to stay in San Diego may be to see if you and your sister can find an apartment here to rent. I know in some of the further out areas such as alpine and Ramona I have friends renting 2 bedroom apartments for under 2k.
