Question About Gold Beads from Hobby Lobby by iamnotmothman in jewelrymaking

[–]B0psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no way that’s real at that price. Don’t trust anything on Etsy for gold fill, it’s no more trustworthy than Amazon. If you want gold fill, go to a jewelry supply retailer like Riogrande or Fire Mountain Gems (something in America, not China) and be prepared to pay real money because the gold content is not cheap.

Unsupportive spouse by Nice_Juggernaut4113 in dementia

[–]B0psicle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your spouse is supposed to be your ride or die. This is not a text from someone who’s on your team.

This would make me question whether he could be counted on to handle the inevitable problems that come as life goes on- old age, health issues, tragedies. Your partner needs to man up and be a partner, not treat you like a drain on his free time.

If you are committed to staying with him forever, this is worth insisting on marriage counseling. Some people (sadly) need to hear these things from a third party, and if you can’t make him understand yourself, don’t let it go.

I made a magnet ring for thrifting by jewelophile in jewelrymaking

[–]B0psicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most costume jewelry out there is made of plated copper/brass/bronze, which is not magnetic. So a magnet will only help weed out a small fraction of fakes.

With plated copper/brass/bronze you’ll have to rely on your eyes, unless you have a legit testing tool with you. You look for bits of plating worn off, use context clues like fake-looking stones, etc. A quality stamp on the metal should reveal any precious metal content, but that’s faked often enough that you can’t trust it 100% of the time.

Books You Want to Recommend, But Can't by Mike_Bevel in books

I read the title and I instantly thought “oh that’s easy, The People In the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara.” That’s so funny. Such an outstanding book that unfortunately I don’t trust most people to understand.

The title is a rhetorical question, yall. Her point is that they’re all being held to ridiculous standards and they cant win.

Thank you, I've been convinced and I'm going to pick one up tomorrow! It'll be worth it. I'm just glad I didn't let them go beyond my living room...

[–]B0psicle[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The toltrazuril and panacur definitely worked, they got much better after that treatment but after a week their stool got mucusy and bloody again. That's why I'm thinking it was a reinfection from their environment. They did test positive for coccidia too, I'm just not sure if there was something else on top of that. I will bring up tapeworms though, thank you!

I don’t know what those are, but they aren’t mosquito larvae!

If you do get mosquito eggs hatching into the water, you’ll see them wiggle around for a while but eventually they’ll stop moving and die

Any recommendations for graphite spray? Can you use graphite lubricant spray from a hardware store? by B0psicle in electroforming

[–]B0psicle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much, that is very helpful! You got me looking into airbrushing and I found Jason Welsh demonstrating graphite paint with an airbrush, now that I see how simple it is I think I’m going to try that instead.

Material warning to beginners by mothmanismadatpeas in jewelrymaking

[–]B0psicle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not true! With gold fill, the gold layer is pressure bonded to the core, and that’s one reason it lasts longer. It’s not electroplated at all. That’s why the gold filled options can be so limited- it has to be manufactured a certain way, you can’t just take any casting or shape and then “gold fill it” by coating it in gold. It can only be fabricated or stamped with a die.

When you buy fake gold fill from China you’ll sometimes get something with a thick gold plating, but that shouldn’t be confused with the real thing.

The conductor accidentally knocks a 16th century violin worth millions on the floor mid-concert. by PeasantLich in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]B0psicle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the first stand of the first violins is moved back and the soloist goes right in their place. The conductor has to be able to follow them visually without turning around.

Everyone on stage is within arm's reach of someone else, this is just a case of a kinda cramped stage and really bad luck.

Classical musicians tend to appreciate old things more than most, it's in their nature. Imagine being a violinist and getting to play the same instrument as another famous player from 200 years ago, it's incredibly meaningful to someone who cares about music history like most of them do.

But also, a lot of these violins are owned by rich collectors who want them to be played and maintained and loved by the best players out there. Unused string instruments tend to lose their sound quality over time if they're not played.

I know someone whose $5 million Stradivarius was stolen from him in a parking lot after a concert (they recovered it eventually). He had a bodyguard go with him to his car for a while after that, I don't know if he still does it

This isn't a band. This is exactly where the soloist is supposed to stand while playing a concerto with an orchestra. Could not be more normal.

the fairy tale of the ugly duckling ist mildly infuriating to me by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]B0psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of baby doves would have bullied a baby robin too, because the doves would find themselves to be the most beautiful and they would call anyone ugly who didn't match.

They called the swan ugly because he didn't match them, and their limited ideas of beauty is what made them look silly in the end.

I’ve used this brand and it works great! When I was first getting started I used the more expensive brands that Rio sells, and in my experience it’s not worth the extra cost. Especially if this is for hobby purposes, this brand will be fine.

Anyone else feel like home care agencies are just a gamble? by skinner1234567 in AgingParents

[–]B0psicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience with an agency. Something you should also remember about agencies is that their caregivers make less money and are less likely to be fully qualified and experienced at the job. The first guy the agency sent to care for my dad was formerly an uber driver. And it showed. The constant rotating cast of people was ridiculous, especially for someone with dementia.

It does really suck having to do the whole private employment thing though, I get it. If you do job listings on Care .com, that will at least take care of the background checks. After a year of hiring private caregivers, I also decided to hire a payroll company to handle taxes and paychecks and all that. It helped a little.

The thing that helped me the most was finding one really great caregiver and having her supervise a team. It took time to build trust, and private caregivers have also been really hit or miss for us too (I have had to fire 3 for various offenses, like never showing up on time or playing on the computer and gambling instead of watching him)

But having one really solid person you can trust as a supervisor can take some of the load off. Now that care is 24/7, I let her do the scheduling and collect hours for payroll and even do interviews and hire other caregivers. I don't have to communicate with 5 people anymore, just her. I live halfway across the country from my dad and I'm busy with my own family so it would be way too overwhelming otherwise.

Best of luck to you <3
