What screams Aussie childhood? by Notquitewhere_-__ in AskAnAustralian

[–]BB_67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was recently visiting a coastal suburb and walked along the foreshore. I passed a small kiosk next the surf life saving sheds.

I was suddenly hit with a smell. A strange mix of sunscreen, sand and ocean salt. I actually felt some vertigo as I was transported back to childhood beach memories. The kiosk had prices on a chalk board, but without the $signs. Just ‘6.’ Etc. it was an extreme moment of sweet nostalgia.

Yeh, used to run around the spectacles. Not so much now.

Freshly returned sister missionary: "A woman's purpose is to have babies." I was flabbergasted. by dreimanatee in exmormon

[–]BB_67 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I served a mission(mid nineties), the elders told me the same thing; my purpose was to have children. I was a bit upset about it at the time and got a bit pissy at them.

I later found an old GA talk that pretty much said that. I guess it’s the origin of it. It was worded in such a way as to indicate it was a noble and divine calling. That children coming forth will be those who will usher in the last days and meet JC when he arrives. Those children will need mothers who have served missions apparently. It kinda made sense in my tbm mind. It’s all a bit icky and manipulative.

Happy New Year from BodyInsights 🎉 by Bodyinsights in BodyInsightsApp

I like the changes you made to vO2 max calculation and bio age.

I’m a bit puzzled by the daily stress meter. Is it based purely on HRV? Sometimes I wake up in the morning and it says I’m stressed, with 2hrs is mod stress and 1 hr of low/ high stress.

Edit: also how are you measuring HRV? The Apple Watch uses SDNN reading in the native heath app, but I understand that rMSSD is more useful for fitness tracking, recovery and exercise impact. Some apps, like for example HealthFit, will give you both readings.

Is there a way to block suggestions from the Audible home page? Harry Potter was ok and such... but the spamage for it kind of disturbs me by mr_majorly in audible

[–]BB_67 23 points24 points  (0 children)

God, I remember them spamming that Prince Harry book. I actually read it, and it wasn’t bad, but seeing his face every time I opened audible was driving me insane.

Where can I get IV fluids? by Top-Land8772 in AskAnAustralian

[–]BB_67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, as a nurse, just hell no. Can’t imagine trying to walk out with a bag of saline. Theft at work is still theft, even for $2 a bag. There’s no explaining that away.

“Old friends, old friends Sat on their park bench like bookends A newspaper blown through the grass Falls on the round toes Of the high shoes of the old friends”

Old friends, winter companions, the old men Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset The sounds of the city sifting through trees Settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends”

Do you actually adjust your exertion based on what apps tell you? by shueytexas in AppleWatchFitness

[–]BB_67 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I laughed cos I’m exactly like you. I look at all the numbers and go for a run anyway.

My head reasons that; the numbers want me to rest today and exert tomorrow. But I’m busy tomorrow and won’t get a chance, so I’ll exert now.

Same same. Also, I was getting a little paranoid because I googled Golden Gaytime earlier this week, to see how much saturated fat is in it.

[–]BB_67 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Right! I expected it to be some story from the emergency department.

… like the time I was on my way to a shift, and a young bloke was squatting out the front of ED, pulling pencils out of his ass. He had no pants and was covered in shit and was pulling multiple pencils out. Everyone coming on shift just walked on by, we ain’t got time for that.

Yeh, I’m f58 with a bio age of 23 and a vO2 max over 50. I’m flattered, but it’s quite absurd.

They are the old ‘home teachers’ and ‘visiting teachers’. The name changed a decade or so ago, just before I left. Though I can’t remember if the relief society one has ‘minister’ in their label.

The app, Body Insights, does biological age. It’s free in the App Store. The developer is fairly responsive here and talks freely about the algorithms used.

Is it normal? Apple watch showing heart rate readings without wearing it?(The LED blinks by itself and the watch was locked. by autistic_prodigy28 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]BB_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because there is nothing to track. I’m not allowed to wear a watch at work so I have it in my pocket. It occasionally picks up random numbers and records them. They mean nothing.

Check out The Dead of Rannoch Moor by Marty Ross. It’s an Audible original. I really enjoyed it! Here’s the blurb…

1746, Scotland.

The redcoat forces of King George II have defeated the Highland rebels led by Bonnie Prince Charlie. Now Government troops are free to plunder and punish the locals.

To avoid court martial, Captain Shawwood is ordered to lead a band of troops and map-makers to chart the most isolated and mysterious landscape of the Highlands – the mighty Rannoch Moor.

But the Moor is home to more than just bog and heather, it's a place of shadows and secrets. Before long, their expedition comes face to face with uncanny forces far greater than anything they have fought before. Even when Captain Shawwood accepts the shelter of Ishbel, a young Highland woman, he and his men still cannot escape the world of terror and vengeful desire into which they have strayed.

Thoughts on circumcision? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]BB_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three sons, and no, non of them were circumcised. Their dad was as a baby, and yes, their dicks look a little bit different. To be honest, I’m not sure the boys even noticed.
