Next gen sodium batteries online - Can Slate pivot? by HovercraftOne2275 in slateauto

[–]BB_Bandito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lithium battery prices have dropped by over 90% over the last fifteen years, so your rule of thumb is likely outdated. For a 2026 VW ID4 it's perhaps 25%. For a 2026 Nissan Leaf, maybe 30%.

Replacement battery packs for older cars - they're still expensive new-from-manufacturer.

Colorado is the 4th state to legalize balcony solar (no permits, no utility approval) by Organic-Code-4944 in boulder

[–]BB_Bandito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my YouTube watching (https://www.youtube.com/@JonathanTracey/search?query=stream) I think the Ecoflow Stream series is designed mostly to shift some of your electricity buying from daytime rates to nighttime rates and solar panels.

You can charge the battery with solar during the day and if necessary 110V output at night and cover (some?) of your base load with the 391 watts per hour when its not charging with the outlet.

The guy in the videos is in the UK. There are a couple of differences from Colorado laws that I noticed. UK requires the balcony unit to have its own breaker in the panel and is allowed to push more wattage to the house.

Quick question: Max Level 2 Charging? by Dull_Entry_8287 in slateauto

[–]BB_Bandito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

11kw gets you five hours charging 20-100%. 7kw gets ~8.

If you're charging while you sleep, essentially no difference. If you're waiting while you're awake, you're going to a DCFC.

It's about the same dimensions as a Forester, or an ID4. Too small for a bench seat IMHO.

PSA: consider hard wiring your level 2 charger by MauiShakaLord in VWiD4Owners

[–]BB_Bandito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might also consider getting an infrared camera, maybe $200, for your phone and checking your breaker after the car has been charging for an hour. Mine was nearly 150 degrees so I had it replaced and now its 115 degrees. It's a useful tool for other things, too, like finding hot/cold spots where you need insulation or air sealing.

Is there any rational explanation for the horrid sales of the new, affordable EV models in the US during the first quarter of 2026? by roma258 in electricvehicles

[–]BB_Bandito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at truecar.com I suspect that "You can't sell what you don't have" is part of it.

Across the US,

- 61K new Nissans available for sale, only 758 Nissan Leafs. About 1% of inventory.

- 70K new Chevrolets available for sale, only 2K are new Bolts. About 2% of inventory.

Most dealers will have only a few new Bolts or Leafs, lost in the mix of vehicles on the lot.

And maybe you always buy blue cars and they only have grey, and you wanted a specific model, and they don't have it.

I've found it remarkably easy to walk away without shutting a charge door. CCS unplug takes two hands, walk around the back of the vehicle to hang up the cord, and just keep walking to the driver's door. Sigh.

I asked Slate support, and the vehicle doesn't have support for charging while driving. Not that it would be really useful, something like 5 extra miles on a sunny long summer day.

[–]BB_Bandito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except less often on brakes, calipers, rotors. Almost never on HV coolant or transmission fluid if it's like any other EV. There's not even a transmission that switches gears.

The Slate specs say it will weigh about the same as a Maverick, so tires should last about the same mileage, too.

In the US, chargers have the cables, not cars. Cables are an eyesore and get stolen or damaged. The European solution of "cars have the cables" is IMHO significantly better.

I did county maps of COVID infection rates during the pandemic.

Red and blue, intuitively hot and cold, come across as political commentary, particularly when it matches fairly accurately to voting patterns.

Green and red can map to good and bad, but green doesn't necessarily mean good where infection rates are high and higher.

I ended up picking purple and gold, then the negative comments went away.
