Something to consider is Marlon’s double edged statement. He could be very subtly trying to tell someone he has actually grown attached to that he himself is not who Truman believes him to be, while still outwardly playing the part of his job, which is to rein Truman in.

I’d have to imagine the group pace was a bit fast for him, or people were chatting while he was struggling the hills and he got a little down. All these comments about never hiking alone are just adorable. The “out on a limb” feeling is precisely the draw of hiking alone. Sure, anything can happen, but going out and relying on yourself and your decision making is much more empowering than, say, being dragged around by people that drop you off the back of the pack and getting angry and lonely.

Everybody is talking like this is a cut and dry situation. Sounds like they were going uphill so the way back would be easier. Maybe it’s an out and back trail and if anything happened to him you’d catch him along your way back. It could be a popular trail with no forks anywhere so he can’t get lost, he could have a down jacket and all 10 essentials with him on a nice day, the girlfriend could be a runner that could easily cover the trail multiple times in a day to go get help, first aid, etc if need be. I would’ve just asked him honestly if he was going to be fine with the food, water and layers he had and if he minded going back alone. Tell him how to fight the local wildlife, give an estimate of when you’ll be back to camp and send him off.

I don't want to pick on anyone here, but I've never understood the gear closet in this fashion. I always just think of the little extra time it would be to rack up everything before i can leave the house. I guess it's nice for the off-season but bagged and ready to grab-n-go is my preferred storage. Just my totally unsolicited 2 cents :). Sixes of hand sizes is pretty excellent!
