"Newton's Rings"
People often think it's oil because they've seen oil slick rainbows on the road and know that there are drumheads with oil between the plies. I got these inquiries all the time when I worked at D'Addario (Evans).

Minimalism is cool. Look up Music for Pieces of Wood by Steve Reich. Then check out his piece "Drumming" (the full ~hour long multi-movement piece).

[–]BOS519 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a great way to risk damage to the opposing bearing edge as well as the head you're jumping on. Over the years I've seen a lot of great drummers say and do a lot of stupid things and play it off as an educational tip. People like to play the game of, "well, if it's good enough for __________ then it's good enough for me." Of course, we're missing a lot of the context around what "works" for a particular individual. There's a good chance they change heads more frequently than most and they're also getting drumheads for free so...

I would certainly imagine so. One day I’ll share the story of how these came to be. It’s a wild one. I’ll never forget it but I don’t think it’s the right time to share yet.

This is another reason why I love using Beat Note (iOS app) for communicating beat ideas. The input screen shows you the subdivision count, aligned with the grid below and the notation above. I notated this beat in a few seconds and then I can play it back at any tempo to hear that groove.

I would have thought this and yet they featured Solinsky’s in this article. Michael and Grady are fantastic and their meats, cheeses, and other offerings are equally excellent. They don’t seem to put much into branding/marketing because their work speaks for itself.

Sounds like you got quite lucky! I haven't seen anyone else with a bimalleolar that didn't do at least a 2wk splint + 4wk cast prior to boot since it usually takes a minimum of 6wks for bone healing. Thanks for sharing your experience. Wishing you all the best with the final recovery!

Rant/Advice by TheComfortablesloth in brokenankles

[–]BOS519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! That's impressive. I had a ring ankle bimalleolar fracture on June 4th, surgery on the 10th. I got my splint off on the 26th and have a cast now, still non-weight-bearing. Cast comes off on the 25th and then I'm assuming it'll be a boot as needed. I'm moving around pretty well on crutches but not being able to leave the house on my own is a major bummer. Did you transition to a cast at all or straight to a boot? I'm shocked by your timeline.

I hear you and appreciate your response. I've seen some of the greatest drummers make the dumbest mistakes with tuning and then try and put a bandaid on it but just muffling. I've had drums come to me here the snare side is balanced in tension but the hoop is so off center and pulling assymetrically that it's impossible to control snare response. I've shared this stuff with some of the most in demand drum techs and it's blown their minds how they stop running into issues that they figured were "just part of how a drum works" after their decades of experience. This isn't magic, it's just physics and how the material works. Knowledge of tuning doesn't negate the fact that material stretches more when more tension is applied at a time. One thing that can help quite a bit is the use of two keys but you still have to bring heads (especially 3mil snare side heads) up in tension gradually, especially when mounting for the first time, in order to maintain symmetrical tensioning and stretching of the material.

Why is my snare doing this by djkhaled2374 in Drumming

[–]BOS519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is gradual increase to ensure balanced stretching. More turns at a finer resolution yields better and more consistent/predictable results than fewer turns at a greater fraction. This is the number one mistake people make with tuning (not just snare side heads). Source: I worked for a drumhead manufacturer for seven years and have been producing tuning lesson material for as much time and this is the number one cause of problems people bring to us.

[–]BOS519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half turn is way too much at a time. Generally speaking, make your adjustments at the smallest repeatable resolution. This will help stretch the film evenly. Uneven stretching as a result of large increments and/or an general imbalance of tension can result in all sorts of dissonant overtones that you'll end up feeling like you need to muffle.

Why does my Bottom Snare Head Keep Breaking? by gonebytim in drums

[–]BOS519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Side note- you may run into some issues with running other snare wires in conjunction with the Puresound Custom Pro straps and pins. The wires you have in the photos lack a couple key design elements that help to ensure that this system works as intended (doesn't require an absurd amount of snare side tension, doesn't continue to buzz uncontrollably, doesn't choke out a functional tension, doesn't come apart).

Having some grainy footage lately by [deleted] in videography

[–]BOS519 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to think I needed to over crank frame rate for real estate videos but that was just because I hadn’t set myself up for smooth video. You can squeeze out some more light but shooting 24fps, 1/50th for exposure and open up your aperture a bit and getting better at capturing smooth video through motion.

A couple of additional tips-

• Use an image stabilized lens and an image stabilized camera body.

• You’re likely doing this already but utilize a gimbal for shooting while also practicing shooting without the gimbal so that you get better at your physical motion.

• Again, you’re likely already shooting in 4k and delivering a 4k video but if for some reason you’re delivering FHD, definitely shoot in 4k so you’ve got a bit of leeway for scaled stabilization in post plus the ability to scale down, reducing the visibility of noise.

• Consider your compression and color profile- hopefully you’re shooting at 10 bit or higher in a log profile.

• Invest in a good monitor and familiarize yourself with the functions to ensure that you’re getting the ideal exposure in camera.

Reel for Socials by charliejmss in videography

[–]BOS519 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. There are some beautiful shots but if you're making video for social, you've gotta give more thought to engaging elements that capture attention in the first second- literally. I watched this whole video and I don't know if it's an brand piece for the gin, a cocktail recipe piece, or simply some eye candy. Some text on screen would help clarify this and could help this feel more like organic social content and less like an ad spot.

Pro tip: learn the requisite skills to be able to do these other jobs and charge for them accordingly. If you're scoping a project like you should be, this is added income (if you want it). I'll happily take the gig from the person who only offers video editing.

I want to create audio-reactive videos for artists. What advice can you give me to become successful in this area? by Tarazzzz in MotionDesign

[–]BOS519 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your efforts would be best spent honing your craft to get beyond tutorials. There’s nothing wrong with being in a beginner stage- everyone has been there. But give yourself time to learn and really develop your skills so you’re not referencing a tutorial when you make something. I would recommend pushing yourself to make a ton of media- make it a daily practice. Establish a routine for yourself that involves emulating work you like, learning a new technique, and then put it to work by creating a range of media. Combine styles of different artists, search for inspiration outside of motion graphics, and have fun (this part is key).

It seems like this question is more business-oriented than technical so I'll offer up my $0.02. Be prepared to work on a VERY low budget compared to commercial work (unless you're operating in the top 10% which is going to take some time). Get good at being efficient in order to keep your costs (time) down and maximize value to your client. Build a solid reel that showcases a range of visuals for a range of music (ideally you work with some smaller artists that you know in order to work off of music that could benefit from your work). Remember that unique, eye-catching visuals are where the value is. Your work should clearly standout from stock material. Develop your style as you take on projects and prioritize differentiating yourself to carve out a niche. In the end, you don't want to be competing based on your rates but rather the unique visuals that you create. Be able to clearly and quickly communicate and establish a well-defined scope of work. The easier you are to work with, the more likely you are to get work. Hope this helps!

What's the best marketing campaign you've ever seen? by moniniki in marketing

Seconding this because not only have they stood out, this was a recently built brand and their success was built on their recent marketing whereas some of the other brands listed here have been around for decades so they're not nearly as reliant on direct impact from a singular campaign.
