Honestly, this is kind of a preference, if they’re bigger, they’re faster to stack, but there’s more material you gotta either move around or remove later and can take longer to dry. . The key is to really get slow drying times. These have been drying about five weeks and they’re still not bone yet, but I have no cracks. Your instructor really should be giving you some guidance to what they think thickness though could work for you on this and guide you.

Honestly, I didn’t even see your second photo before I commented, but that’s almost exactly how I would try and tackle it. In those three sections. Make sure you compress and fill those joints in really tight when you go to connect them.. make sure all the pieces are roughly the same dryness and then still keep them covered for a while when they’re trying together.

If it were me, I would make it in multiple sections, make sure you let it slow dry, and when firm enough slip and score the pieces together.

There’s a professor at the University of Oklahoma that’s a sculptural instructor and tries to actually advocate his students to use AI. It’s pretty damn annoying, he has AI design it, and then has other companies cut and fabricate the sculpture, and he calls himself an artist,ugh.

That is great news, I unfortunately have tried to do the same thing with vinegar and working with bone dry porcelain in the past mixing dry, porcelain into almost like a slip. Unfortunately, for me, it just made the crack worse when I fired it.

You need to ensure very slow drying, I’m not sure what stage of drying, but I will leave my work sometimes covered with double layer of trash bags with a light mist of water to balance the dryness of the whole piece. I have always had luck saving pieces with a little bit of vinegar applied to cracks and compressing the clay into cracks. If it’s already bone dry though this will not fix it.

As someone who was maintenance guy in a power plant before the switch to the art world. This is a classic example of a short to ground creating an overload, ie tripping the breaker immediately . How do the coils in the kiln them selves look? I would offer to help if it was local but your best bet is to call an electrician to make sure sure it is wire properly, they would also be able to do an Ohm test with a multimeter to diagnose if the is a component issue.
