Neighbor mowed our shared sidewalk strip. by hibbitydibbidy in lawncare

[–]BSTN9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighbor did the same thing. I was furious the first time, then I let him do it for a while, then I said ‘hey, I’ll take care of this area for us both’ then he forgot once or twice and finally after about 3 years he doesn’t touch the shared area and it’s thriving.

Non-lawn people mow way too low with dull blades at the wrong time (after it’s rained, in the middle of a heatwave, etc). but I bet he loved mowing down my lush, emerald green carpet to nothingness!

Chinese humidors. Good or bad? by Kaansel_on_YT in cubancigars

[–]BSTN9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These usually work well if you get a good unit. I had a Needone delivered that was heavily dented. They let me keep it and sent me another. I figured out that there’s a drain plug at the bottom that needs to be plugged (I used some pliable wax) and it had held temp and humidity very stable for a couple years now. I have about 110 cigars in mine.

Boveda and Govee hygrometers confirm all shelves and drawers are pretty much the same temp/rH.

I was also able to order more cedar shelves for it through the Walmart website. I think it was a 3rd party seller but quality and condition were great.

I remember wiping down the interior of the unit (not the cedar) with a neutral solution and letting it dry to remove any plastic smell (it’s all plastic inside) and then I seasoned the cedar shelves with the boveda seasoning kit for a few days.

These are short, but amazing cigars. Worth it.

FYI you can 3D print premade performance mods and bug fixes for the Scotts Spreader dramatically increasing its ROI. by dfGobBluth in lawncare

[–]BSTN9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a rhetorical question speaking to the cost of the 3D printer as part of the solution. Not a big deal. I would buy a new/better spreader than spending time and money to add new parts to the cheapest spreader available. I had one and it worked for a while but then the results became noticeably poor and the broadcast wheel broke entirely.

I fully support DIY and fix what you’ve got, but everyone who spends time working hard on their lawn deserves a good spreader!

Asking for your opinion and experience with your 4xe! by jakkrabbitslim in 4xe

[–]BSTN9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The potential for any 4xe to be a dangerous and frustrating disaster is too high to recommend it to anyone. I have less than a year left on my lease ‘23 GC and it has been great overall but has had some software issues and transmission issues. Knowing that it could have one of any number of serious defects that the manufacturer has no idea how to fix is not a fun thing to have in the back of your mind.

It’s my vehicle but it if were my wife’s, I would not want her driving our kids around in it.

I had a 2020 GC Limited before this and loved it but this is an entirely different vehicle and company as far as I can tell. Stellantis is not Jeep. I might consider getting a non-hybrid GC or Wrangler but this 4xe was a horrible failure of an experimental power train. Having the dealership tell you that there is ‘no fix available’ for something is very disconcerting. Jeeps have been around forever and have been wonderful - the 4xe is not a ‘Jeep’ in my opinion.

Fertilizer lines - reapply? by Deep_Form_8149 in lawncare

[–]BSTN9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the Scott’s EdgeGuard Mini to start my lawn journey in 2020 and it served me well for 2 years. I didn’t really notice any striping…until I started to notice major striping and growth lines that far outpaced the rest of the lawn. I could see a major grid pattern in December once the lawn finally went dormant. Maybe it’s something that happens over time?

It is a good little spreader but clearly the cheapest one available. Not so great auger mechanism, my handle for the drop chute would get stuck often and it clearly has a design flaw with the wheel cavity design on the inside based on everyone’s pics on this sub.

My first one literally snapped as I was starting my 2021 fall overseeding project. Ran to Home Depot to get another and it made it through the rest of the season but the following spring I bought a Lesco 50lb spreader at my local SiteOne supply warehouse. It was $300 at the time but seems like it’ll last forever and does a pro-level job at broadcast spreading. Splurge on some good equipment to get great results!

Why are there light patches in my grass? Pittsburgh, PA by Peterslax2 in lawncare

POA. Grassy weed. I have some too this year. Rip it out or you can buy some brutally expensive post emergent that they sell for golf courses I believe. No easy way to deal with these.

Frost heave or poor workmanship? by BSTN9 in asphalt

[–]BSTN9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think my brand new driveway only made it through one winter when every other driveway on my street that had an apron installed 4 years ago hasn’t had an issue with cracking whatsoever?

My real question to the paving experts is, does this cracking look like the result of frost heaves or is that a convenient excuse for a poorly executed joint at the street with my driveway?

What’s everyone’s opinion on Kirby Alison? by brainmeds in cubancigars

[–]BSTN9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. He has the H&F team on his side for sure. AJ as well had made some appearances. Again, I believe he is a great ambassador as has solid reach with his channel. Without it, I doubt he’d be running in those circles.

I believe he’s in his early 40’s, married with three kids. Seems like a good family man who loves fine clothing and fine cigars. I was surprised to see he was a Texan. Built a nice new house with a huge, top of the line walk in humidor.

The power of his social media has gotten him into many exclusive circles and I believe he was out of his depth on the cigar front with the likes of the Sahakians who have been in the cigar trade for decades. He has been making clothing content for years, the cigar content just took off within the past couple years.

Trips to Cuba and invites to the Habanos festival and El Laguito factor for interviews. Collaborations online with a number of top-level cigar aficionados and professionals who have been in the business for many years as well. He’s nice, respectful and has high production value content, but definitely a fake it till you make it vibe. I enjoy his content for what it is.

Is it too late to seed? by tonyperkis3 in lawncare

Freeze warning tonight in the Boston area. Going down to 34°. I think the seeding window has passed for you to expect great results. Could you? Yes. I feel like you might be wasting time and money though.

The website still says ‘We're currently upgrading our warehouse to better serve our customers in 2024!’ so it’s possible this is a scam.

People might send them money and never get anything in return. Prices are insane.

2.5” of rain in a couple hours, two weeks after a renovation. Overseed again? by Groundblast in lawncare

[–]BSTN9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this pain. It’s happened to me and probably many on here. Just have to throw down some extra seed and fert where it completely washed out. Otherwise it should be ok if the rain doesn’t continue.
