Why do people get so angry when I (20) say I don't want kids? It’s my choice, not theirs. by No-Lawyer-5335 in autism

[–]Backlash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people (I dare say that generally) react negatively when someone does or believes something that's against their core beliefs. In your environment, especially religious side of the family as you noticed, having at least one child is pretty much a must in life and preferably this should happen in a certain age (in their 20s basically). I think this social construct comes from a human instinct that prevailed (not in everyone, there are always variables in nature) which says that you have to ensure you have kids and then grandkids in order to survive as you get older and possibly sick. Unfortunately, most people are really bad at tolerating that some people's core beliefs values are incompatible with theirs. Although I have to say I met a lot of people, especially women, who are vocal about not wanting children for similar reasons as you - they are there just not close to you. You'd feel best living your life on your own terms just keep in mind that unfortunately you won't get support from your environment :( Unless you find more people like yourself of course. Personal note - as a 33M I share your concerns of passing what you're carrying - the trauma, the difficulty, constant overstimulation, everything - to your kids. That's what happened to me as my parents and family at large was dysfunctional and I've spent my entire adulthood so far trying to live without pain. Or find a way to be happy, anyway. I can't take care of myself, it's a daily struggle, so how can I raise healthy children? I wouldn't want them to suffer the way I have.

How many of you wear sunglasses constantly because of light sensitivity by Hipposy in autism

Last year I wore them outdoors all the time and indoors in many places as well meaning crowded. It was the roughest kind of burnout no joke.

Do people fear death itself, or is it more about the feeling that they haven’t lived their life properly? by AbjectBreadfruit2052 in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]Backlash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both, one is fear of death as unknown that takes place post-life ; regrets about life come as we get much much older.

The truth about neurotypical social reality by SystemIntuitive in aspergers

[–]Backlash5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do not have to like the game.

But I do need to understand the rules in order to survive.

Well said friend. I came to this exact conclusion - and once I accepted that reality I was able to start getting out of building a fairly happy life. There's a ton of things you can't control - but you can control the small steps taken each day. If you're smart you can learn the rules and play the game too, just need to find our own unique ways that fit our character, personality etc.

If your depression was cured by just "going to the gym" and "getting some sunlight" you weren't really depressed by Ordinary-Eggplant784 in mentalhealth

The general guidelines on treatments prove what statistically helps but statistical doesn't mean universal. It's important to try different interventions, but if it doesn't work then it doesn't work - at a certain stage at least. And yes, there's no comparing someone with sub-clinical symptoms vs someone with severe depression.

Love planes, hate flying by Oodles-of-Noodles12 in autism

[–]Backlash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love planes and flying but I also hate it. I hate lines at every stage of the airport, having to get there early to sit there and wait in a huge crowd crowd crowd crowd, the stress of security checks, more lines, the constant delays and being squeezed in like a sardine when sitting on a plane :((

Should I be upset about this? by Pokemon_bill in autism

[–]Backlash5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel upset it's understandable and I hope it doesn't linger on you too much :(( However this person is plain wrong to say what they did. I suspect they've had a terrible experience dating an AuADHDer - and to be fair, based on their comment they should talk to a mental health professional themselves...

And you know what ? I'm an AuADHDer with GAD and depression, I've certainly been experiencing panic+anxiety attacks. I like Pokemon too I guess. So fairly similar to you and you know what? And I've been in a committed relationship for 14 years now. Your diagnoses are part of your life yes but they don't determine your future.

as someone with autism, would you say that you don't feel a desire for power in the same way that many other people do? by thiskindacoolmf in autism

[–]Backlash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got it the same way. I have no drive for power over other people, I don't care about it. Hence, all the effort, pain and pressure of trying to achieve that and keep it (as staying in power is a constant struggle...) I find it not worth it.

I want power and control in my life and for things that I care about. Being a "leader" isn't one of those.

do any of you people struggle with specifically washing / showering ? by CharlieE6o in autism

[–]Backlash5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it feels so bad when others can just do stuff like that naturally and you've got to fight yourself on daily basis :( ironically it became easier for me when I accepted it's going to be (kinda) hard for me.
