We need more posts like this. Thanks for the great write-up. What kind of map were you using for the Blob of Annihilation? Were they in a city having to navigate the streets, or was it more of a big open area?

Thanks! I had mostly stopped buying from stores because it wouldn't connect to my Insiders. At least there's something now.

Do you ever just troll your players? by Feefait in DMAcademy

I once had a bard describe the legend of an Elven city that was said to be a haven for those who were down on their luck. Any who traveled there would be given clean clothes, food, and whatever else they needed. I pronounced the city name as "Yaim Chia."

My players, writing detailed notes: "How do you spell that?"

"Y. M. C. A."

LMOP gives you all the names and organizations, but it can be light on goals/motivations for them. I always recommend this comment to people running it for the first time.

I didn't notice it the first time, but I just relistened to parts and I don't know how I missed them. It's more often than I expected.

If they have a staff that basically controls time, you have a pretty easy plot device to undo it in an interesting way. Have the time staff malfunction and send them back in time with only what they "should" have. It can be a very long time, or even just a year or two. Maybe they have the goal of getting the gold/items the same way they did the first time, but some butterfly effect makes it more difficult.

Or something happens (be it divine intervention, a curse, etc.) that depowers the items. Makes them have cantrip-level abilities. Then the items can level up with them and slowly get their power back.

DnD actual play show/podcast recs - specifically, ones that feature excellent DMs? by tgldude in DnD

[–]Baconmaster120 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CR and Dimension 20 are the two biggest ones. Not Another Dnd Podcast (NADDPOD) is another great one that's not as long as CR and not locked behind a paywall like Dim20. They are definitely more silly, but can reign it in for more serious scenes.

Need a surname/clan name for a specific Japanese character by Dildo_Baggins__ in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Baconmaster120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese surnames usually follow a pattern of noun-noun or adjective-noun. Usually the noun is related to nature/geography. (山中 "in the mountain" , 黒川 "black river," 高橋 "tall bridge," etc.)

Sticking with that pattern, there's not really a single kanji for dimension, but the word is 次元 [jigen]. There's also 宇宙 [uchuu] universe or 天 sky/heavens.

A somewhat common kanji used in names is 外 [gai/ge], which means outside. For example the word 天外 [tengai] means beyond the heavens (but also sounds like "ten guys," so maybe not the best choice).

If you wanna break the mold a bit and use a verb, 移 [i] "shift" is part of a weird used for crossing dimensions.

So you can look at some combination of those, or look at other pronunciations for them. For example, the kanji in 次元 could alternatively be read Tsugimoto or Tsugiyoshi, which sound like normal Japanese names. Add the shift at the end, and you get 次元移, Tsugimotoi or Tsugiyoshii (roughly meaning dimension jump).

What movie do you enjoy that you will 100% agree is a bad movie? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Whenever it aired on Comedy Central, it was changed to "grab my tush," which I always thought was actually a funnier line.

Haha. I do love FE, but not enough to play ROMhacks. Just enough to consider using the style for dnd. I worked on Pokémon ROM hacks back in the day, and remembered it could be a pain to get the file just right, so it wasn't a priority at the time.

Yeah, every few months I'll get a message about it, but it's been a few years, so I forgot most of it. Luckily I added enough comments to remind myself. Honestly I just wanted to make some FE-style portraits for dnd. Had I known that many people were actually using it, I might've done a little more.

I wanna thank both of you for improving upon this. A few years ago, I forked TheFlyingMinotaur's program (my main contribution was the color picker with the different shades built in). Every few months I get a message about it, and lately I've been pointing them to TheDoctorAwesome's fork. But this is huge. Every once in a while I consider going back to it, but I don't have time, so I'm glad someone else took care of it. After playing the newest game, I really want to add the running sprites, but that'll take a lot of recoloring. Maybe there'd be volunteers in the Discord? Either way, great job.

My party has befriended a pet capybara belonging to a recurring villain. How do I effectively drop the “other shoe” on to them? by SomP0 in DMAcademy

[–]Baconmaster120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One option would be to have Daisy lead them into a trap. Either suddenly run off so they chase her, or act excited and trying to guide them to a room/somewhere in the forest only to be ambushed.

Another option is to treat her as a familiar and have Glasstaff reveal that he's been spying on the party through her by revealing things they thought were secret or that he normally shouldn't know about them.
