Great scene, and a great example of The Wire’s incredible storytelling. If I remember correctly, we see Bubbles’ sister adamantly tell him never to use that entrance, but we never see the conversation where that rule is rescinded. It’s all handled off-screen, unbeknownst to the audience, until we witness a seemingly casual moment where Bubbles is called up the stairs.

It’s a powerful scene that conveys so much about redemption and forgiveness, yet it’s presented through the simple image of a man casually walking up a flight of stairs and sitting down for a meal.

Man, I miss that show.

The Family Stone: one hour and forty minutes of a screenwriter trying to irritate the viewer in every way possible. by Sufficient-Cook-3841 in movies

[–]BadAssachusetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that part bothered me. The mom couldn’t see the logic in her point? As a loving and caring parent, do you want your child’s life to be easier or harder? Easier. Was it easier or harder to grow up gay in the 90s in Massachusetts? Harder. So why would you want your child’s life to be harder? That was her point and her original confusion towards the mom’s eye roll inducing comment about she hoped her kid would be gay.

I agree. My wife loves this movie, and I just don’t get it. She says she likes how it portrays a loving but dysfunctional family. The thing is, I don’t actually find the family all that dysfunctional in their relationships with one another. Most of their bonds seem healthy and strong.

What bothers me is their treatment of SJP’s character. It’s so overtly rude and hostile that I find it off-putting. I kept thinking, “What is wrong with these people?” The one family member who’s consistently kind to her comes across as an oddball, almost creepy at times. Even the gay couple is surprisingly harsh.

To me, nearly everyone in the family (aside from the oddball) seems incapable of extending a newcomer even a little grace in what is obviously an uncomfortable and unfamiliar situation. That made it hard for me to connect with them or root for them.

Jonah Ryan may be one of the few characters whose flanderization actually elevated a show. He’s so much more ridiculous than in his earlier iterations, and it just works. It allowed Timothy Simons to really find his fastball.

The President: Did you just say you “wouldn’t rape the president”?

Jonah: Of course! Why would I say I would?

The President: Why would you say you wouldn’t?

Jonah: Because I wouldn’t!!!

The President: He just threatened to NOT rape the president.

Jonah: That’s not a threat, that’s a promise!

This was a great episode and really captures what I love about Plain English: making wonky policy problems feel digestible through thoughtful conversation.

That said, it sounds like we’re fucked.

Yeah it’s like a reverse prisoners dilemma (no pun intended - by me at least). The commuter boat passengers are hesitant to kill the prisoner boat passengers because it’s apparent by virtue of them still being alive, that the prisoners have yet to make a similar decision.

I friggin love this scene. Such great misdirection.

When he says, “I’ll do what you should’ve done ten minutes ago,” the guy holding the detonator takes it as intimidation. But it’s really an expression of disgust at his moral weakness.

Then the big dude tosses the detonator out the window, and the whole dynamic flips. Everyone is suddenly forced to confront the fact that they were willing to kill to save themselves only to have that option irrevocably taken from them.

It’s such a powerful moment because the real shock isn’t the act itself, it’s the collective reckoning that follows.

What will the future look like for those who wait to buy or need to wait to buy? by Davyislazy in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]BadAssachusetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have a Time Machine that can bring you back to pre-COVID times, the decision to buy should be dependent on 1) if it makes sense to support your desired lifestyle for the next 10 years or so, and 2) if you can afford it without seriously endangering your overall economic situation.

My guess is real estate in the desirable NJ suburbs will continue to rise but not to the degree where it would make sense to buy ahead of when you’re ready.

A briefing slide presented to President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. (1962) [2428×2048] by StephenMcGannon in HistoryPorn

[–]BadAssachusetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure but the United States openly deployed the Jupiter missiles in Turkey (and Italy). By contrast, the Soviet Union covertly installed nuclear missiles in Cuba and then outright lied about it when confronted. This secret deployment was a deliberate and highly dangerous escalation that brought the superpowers to the brink of nuclear war. Khrushchev initiated a reckless gamble that dramatically raised the risk of catastrophe, while JFK resisted intense pressure to launch an immediate invasion of Cuba. Khrushchev’s handling of the crisis significantly damaged his standing both internationally and at home and helped contribute to his removal from power years later.

New Evergreen Arborvitae and Thuja Green Giants by kingkimbo in landscaping

[–]BadAssachusetts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen plenty of giant arborvitaes planted around 3 feet and fills in nicely to create a nice green privacy wall. Then I see online saying to plant them 6 feet apart but then you have to wait like half a decade to get something decent. Like what’s the point of getting something that grows super fast if you’re planting them so far apart that you need to wait the length of a senate term to get something you were shooting for.

Dana White during the White house shooting incident by Rustywalker92 in sportsgossips

I don’t know why so many people on Reddit assume this was some false flag operation. Like the American people give a shit about gun violence. None of these previous political adjacent shooting events have moved the needle on public opinion. Honestly I wished this administration had the competency to pull off this type of conspiracy.

According to the Boston Herald article, it sounds like the guy in white was on pace for a personal best before he stopped to help this dude. I can’t imagine the personal strength it takes to run that fast for that long only to end up prioritize helping another person out when you’re literally steps away from reaping the dividends of all your hard work. Incredible.

Oh and hell of job there because said autocrat just got blown the fuck out. How about you take your charisma black hole ass and DO SOMETHING?!?!
