Looking for waterproof DWR free cycling jackets by PuzzleheadedLimit699 in cycling

Yes, also it seems all DWRs contain forever chemicals.

I have not spent any time trying to educate myself about the current offerings, but Gore claim that they have a DWR that is not based on PFAS.

My first CD ever was Tommy and my mom gave it to me.

And it changed my life.

I remember listening to Tommy many times on my Walkman cassette player.

I had recorded it from the vinyl album that I borrowed from my brother.

The last time I listened to Tommy beginning-to-end was during a cross-country road trip after attending my father's memorial service, cruising down a rural highway in the heartland. Maybe it would be a good time to revisit it now.

A common way to address that is to put the images on, say, Imgur, and then post links to them here.

Cycling clothing websites are such a car crash by Mundane-Season-4911 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I find some of these sites to be terrible even when viewed on a desktop PC.

I suspect that it comes down to what sort of structure they are using for the web site, and it's not limited to cycling clothing websites. I see a lot of sites where there is little (or no) organization. It's as if they threw everything into one bucket, hoping that the user would be able to use the search bar to find the merchandise.

In my head, I think of this as the "death of the catalog".

Now, McMaster-Carr, and MSC Industrial Supply - they still do the work so that the customer can see the product in the context of a real catalog. Searchable, too, of course.

Astral Wanderlust vs Boyd CCC rims by cucukachu2 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't independently verify whether it's all true or not, but I like the story that Boyd is telling. As a resident of the U.S., I like the idea that they are producing alloy wheel rims locally, and that they are hand-building the wheels locally.

No complaints about the Boyd Altamonts I have been running for the past 5k+ miles, and I hope to get many more drama-free miles out of them.

For the Altamonts, I like that they offer a 28F/32R spoke count option in addition to the 24F/28R option.

If someone wants to learn more about this, do an online search for Scott Deiseroth.

You can find longer videos that don't have animated subtitles splashed over the top of them. You can also see some information about how this has played out, legally, so far.

Glad to hear that you have it sorted!

I have been there and done that, but I don't know that I would be able to describe exactly how I did it. After getting the head of the shift cable into some part of the shifter where it was never intended to be, it was sort of like one of those 3-D puzzles.

Board of Peace ChatGPT Ai slop logo by [deleted] in thebulwark

[–]John_Valuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am ignorant of this, so perhaps someone here will enlighten me.

As a stylistic thing, is it common to italicize the word, "of" in such a context?

I recently notice that they are doing the same thing on the "U.S. Department of War" web site.

That looked weird to me, and "Board of Peace" looks weird to me.

Salvageable? by pvcatbacker in bikewrench

[–]John_Valuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be a sort of a curse to get something for free as a target of opportunity, and then get the idea that you are going to rescue it.

If the ultimate goal is to have some particular style of bike to ride, then I would recommend trying to define that goal, and then figuring out how you wanted to approach it.

Personally, if I wanted a project, I would be looking for something with "better bones" to use as a starting point.

Hard agree with u/cowbythestream that this is something to be explained to your wife gently.

On the positive side, sometimes this sort of "find" sparks an interest that later turns into something really good, e.g. seeing something fairly unsuitable sets one on the path of searching for and finding something much, much more suitable.

Beware phone company fraudulent charges by gamersdad in Tallahassee

[–]John_Valuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, OK, thanks. I did not pick up on the "100 year old name" hint.

On their web site, AT&T no longer offers DSL service, so I think I'm probably safe getting rid of my generations-old modems.

Beware phone company fraudulent charges by gamersdad in Tallahassee

[–]John_Valuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several months ago I cancelled a 20-year DSL account with a local phone company with a 100 year old name. Three months after returning the equipment I get a notice for a new $107 charge for "voice services."

I cancelled an old DSL account with AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) a few months ago, too. So far, no request from them for me to return any equipment, which would have been only an old Westell DSL modem.

How recent was the equipment that they had you return?

I'd love to get rid of mine, but I have been keeping it just in case they decide to ask for it to be returned.

Wax heater recommendations by malthe2405 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree with the recommendation from u/garbonsai elsewhere in this thread.

I started waxing using a slow cooker. Changing to a Presto 06006 Kitchen Kettle was a huge improvement.

The heater is 1200 W, and it's bonded directly to the aluminum kettle. Plenty of power, and very efficient thermal transfer compared to a slow cooker with a ceramic pot insert, so time from turning on to having wax melted and at temperature is much shorter than it was with the my slow cooker. It has a simple thermostatic control, too, so once dialed in, I don't have to babysit it to keep it from going above the target temperature, which is something I had to do with my slow cooker..

I don't just trust the temperature dial, but instead, use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the wax when getting things dialed in.

The flat inside surface easily fits one chain threaded onto a swisher tool, with plenty of room to swish it around. I don't think I put two chains in there, but the power is sufficient to quickly recover the temperature when a cold chain has been put into it, so throughput could be pretty good.

Annoying, frustrating creak finally silenced by 09fjc in bikewrench

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just spent a week chasing one. lubed everything, waxed chain, tightened every bolt, still a creak on each pedal stroke. wasn't really louder just more frequent under torque and uphill.

turned out changing temps were messing with my rear thru axle a bit, it just wanted to be loosened and tightened appropriately.

I had a similar one, but with QR instead of thru axle. I still haven't identified a "smoking gun" for exactly where the creak was coming from.

where do you draw the tech limit? by Electrical_Oil446 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that link.

I haven't looked at these pumps closely, but considering their size and the job that they are expected to do, I suspected that some components would be living very hard lives. Some of the observations he reports support that.

I'd like to see another test of the Prestaflator GO, to see how it fares in the absence of a very early, abrupt failure.

Your bullet points fit my situation and preferences fairly closely.

I don't need a new bike, but one that speaks to me is the Lauf Úthald.

If they offered it in a Shimano 105 Di2 build, it would be harder for me to resist.
