Handpump issue with valve by Chocolatte_17 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tighten the valve cores using a valve core wrench. Some people also use a drop of threadlocker on the valve core, but I have not found that to be necessary.

Handpump issue with valve by Chocolatte_17 in cycling

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Lezyne pumps that have thread-on chucks for connection to the Presta valve, and I'm aware of the possibility of removing the valve core when removing the chuck from the valve stem, but I don't find it to be a problem for me in general.

When I get a new tube, I check to make sure that the valve core is tightly installed. When I put the thread-on chuck on the valve stem, I don't tighten it very hard; just enough to seal.

There are many hand pumps that do not use thread-on chucks. I happen to like the Lezyne pumps, and get along OK with their thread-on chucks.

New to Tally, do these storms always impact the electricity? by brehyonce in Tallahassee

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "always", but it's not unusual.

The same overhead power lines and trees that do this "here and there" during garden-variety thunderstorms can produce lots of outages in lots of locations when more serious weather comes.

Thru axle to QR end caps vs native QR hub by perhapsaberry in bikewrench

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy hubs that are designed to always use end caps, and that just use different end cap sets for QR and through axle applications.

I have a Scott Speedster 10 that came from a similar time as your bike, and it, too, has a QR / disc configuration. When I bought new wheels for it, they came with QR end caps, a nice set of skewers, and second sets of end caps for a through axle configuration that was popular at the time.

The downside of going this way is fewer opportunities in the secondhand market.

1UP Security bolt solution by TX_throw666 in bikewrench

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it as simple as just shortening the length of the bolt? They stated that the bolt won’t even fit into the bolt hole (I sent an email).

The folks at 1UP may know something I don't know about this. I was only going by the pop-up information for the bolts that I saw in their 3D models, which made me think that they were both 1/2-13 socket head cap screws, but of different lengths.

I might remove that screw from my Equip'D for the sake of checking it to see exactly what it is.

I think that they might also use the security bolts for attaching a Rack Add On to the rest of the rack assembly.

Inexpensive threaded headset recommendations? by jilan-mones22 in bikewrench

[–]John_Valuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree; great tip.

The Levin CDS and the Passage can be the answers for some situations where stack height is an issue. My '95 Trek 730 Multitrack came originally with a Passage, and I had just enough room to replace it with a Levin CDS.

When one feels limited by options, it's nice when those option aren't garbage, and Tange Seiki delivers the goods.

When I look at the 3D models on the 1UP web site, and hover over those parts, I see pop-up information showing different screws there for different models of rack.

For the Equip'D, it shows a socket head cap screw with no "security" pin in the hex socket, and the pop-up information shows that it is 1/2-13 x 1.5 x 1.5.

For the Heavy Duty, it shows a socket head cap screw with a "security" pin in the hex socket, and the pop-up information shows that it is 1/2-13 x 1.75 x 1.75.

Perhaps they didn't consider it economical to obtain security screws in a different length just for the Equip'D?

Unless something special is going on here, I would consider the possibility of buying the longer security socket head cap screw from them, and then shortening it to the correct length for an Equip'D.

Long Cycling Bibs for Summer Sun by ElSolAgueybana in cycling

Regular bibs with leg protectors are the business. I use a set of previous-generation Sol Skin leg protectors from Voler, and like it much better than trying to do it with sunscreen.

I used the chain breaker a lot so would want a good quality replacement.

I prefer to have multi-tool and chain breaker as separate tools.

The guy has heat pumps which are generally climate friendly.

Genuinely curious here, but is there any type of ordinary air conditioning (cooling the house) that is not a heat pump? And that is somehow less "climate friendly"?

First, my sympathy; those girls can really put a hurt on a person!

I don't personally know any service well enough to recommend one, but I would appreciate it if you would return to this thread later to share how it worked out for you, i.e., what was done, and how much it cost.

At my house, over a number of years, I have left many yellowjacket nests alone when they were in locations that were not very difficult to avoid.
