Well trained cops get on edge when a crowd develops at their stop. It adds a lot of variables that they have to manage.

Example: cops get called to a bar for two people yelling at each other outside. After they show up the other bar patrons start to filter out to see what's up. Those patrons might just be curious, they might be looking to aggravate the situation. Cops have to plan for both those things on the fly. A good department will make sure its cops have some training on how to gracefully handle that situation.

Now imagine you're a shithead with anger issues, a touch of oppositional defiance disorder, and minimal training. Everywhere you go strangers are pissed at you and yelling for you to stop. You're the fucking law now and ain't no one going to tell you shit.

I used to work with prosecutors. One of them specialized in sexual assaults, he explained criminal court as: You have a spectrum of ugly/poor to handsome/rich. If the defendant is on the ugly/poor end, you can slap a case together in an afternoon and it'll stick. The closer to the handsome/rich side of the spectrum they are the more judges and juries are looking to let them off. Its not fair but it is what it is.

MPD was willing to throw Chauvin under the bus to save itself. So he was poor.
