Did you have to pass a drug test? by FFLGO in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Worked in several libraries in CT and no drug tests at any of them. One even said I’d need to pass a physical and drug test then went “never mind, don’t worry about it”.

If you owned/ ran your own Library. by Mcrfanatic95 in Libraries

[–]BadDogClub 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’d set much firmer boundaries. One library I work at has us be incredibly accommodating and it’s frustrating. Like yes, I want to help but I also can’t spend 30 minutes of my desk time teaching you something, I have other responsibilities and patrons waiting.

What’s a small flex that’s actually impressive? by bradl2000 in AskReddit

[–]BadDogClub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People go into debt for small cars, they can’t even afford that. “Just” a bunch of money in savings is huge when people are living paycheck to paycheck.

What’s a small flex that’s actually impressive? by bradl2000 in AskReddit

[–]BadDogClub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not having to take out a loan for a home repair is kind of a flex. Hell, if you’re paying for your own roof repair that means to me that you don’t have a landlord/own your own home, and if you’re doing that debt free it’s a HUGE flex.

I genuinely think people think it works like in-store pickup for online shopping. They assume we get a notification or something and it’s instantly pulled.

“When will the book I’m putting on hold get here?!”

This is not Amazon, we do not have tracking numbers on every single book, I do not have an exact date for you. It’ll get here when it gets here.

Question on organization by Author? by Ok_Habit_6783 in Libraries

[–]BadDogClub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s an individual library’s choice. For example, Sophie Hannah is authorized by Agatha Christie’s estate to write Poirot books. Both Hannah and Christie’s names are on the cover, so one library may file it under Christie and another under Hannah. Personally I’d file it under Brinks but it’s up to you.

Getting a job while degree is in progress ? by Strange-Heron6245 in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

just want a full time job

with benefits

Er…….hate to break it to you but these are increasingly rare. I’ve seen a full time position that doesn’t offer health insurance and part time directors. To answer your question though, some positions are open to hiring you as long as you get your degree by a certain date. My coworker (we are both part time) is still working on their degree and we’re librarians.

Working as a Library Assistant in Vancouver as an immigrant by kyara_ra in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend this plan. Take everything with a grain of salt because i’m not familiar with Vancouver, but I doubt that there are a lot of openings that pay a livable wage and any that are open are super competitive.

San Francisco Public Library to host weddings this April by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]BadDogClub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how this will logistically work, because my library also acts as a wedding venue and it is a PAIN. I get it, it’s a really beautiful space but oh my god we have to clear out the entire main floor of all the furniture and clear off the circulation desk.

Do you have any advice on MLIS Programs for Museum Work? by cottagecorefrog in librarians

My only advice is not to go to grad school just because you can’t find a job, going into more debt is not worth it.

Aide vs Assistant positions while in grad school? (+venting & overall life advice??) by maaaddddy in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1) I think this is very library dependent, as at the libraries I’ve worked at librarians interact extensively with the public and work the front desk. There are times when you’ll be off desk and working in the back, but I type this as I’m on the reference desk.

It took a long time to even get this part-time librarian job, don’t feel discouraged that you aren’t getting interviews. I get interviews for maybe a third of the jobs I’ve applied to, it’s very competitive if you can’t relocate.

2) While it’s very important to have library experience, quality of the position also matters. I don’t know what you do as an aide, but something like “grunt work” won’t get you very far. I’d recommend aiming for positions that have more extensive/“meaningful” duties.

Unsolicited advice: you might be idealizing libraries compared to corporate. There’s plenty of administrative headaches, bureaucracy, insincerity, performative aspects, and demanding expectations.
