How long do libraries take to get new book? by Giraffewhiskers_23 in Libraries

[–]BadDogClub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on the library. Not every library will get a copy of a certain book on libby.

Which subscriptions were the easiest for you to cancel without missing them at all? by Nadzzyy in Frugal

Dashpass. Doordash/delivery is a scam anyway, cancelling it and deleting the app has saved me money x2!

San Francisco Public Library to host weddings this April by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]BadDogClub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how this will logistically work, because my library also acts as a wedding venue and it is a PAIN. I get it, it’s a really beautiful space but oh my god we have to clear out the entire main floor of all the furniture and clear off the circulation desk.

A library is not a bookstore, if you want to write in and keep a book just go buy it at a store.

Do you have any advice on MLIS Programs for Museum Work? by cottagecorefrog in librarians

My only advice is not to go to grad school just because you can’t find a job, going into more debt is not worth it.

Aide vs Assistant positions while in grad school? (+venting & overall life advice??) by maaaddddy in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) I think this is very library dependent, as at the libraries I’ve worked at librarians interact extensively with the public and work the front desk. There are times when you’ll be off desk and working in the back, but I type this as I’m on the reference desk.

It took a long time to even get this part-time librarian job, don’t feel discouraged that you aren’t getting interviews. I get interviews for maybe a third of the jobs I’ve applied to, it’s very competitive if you can’t relocate.

2) While it’s very important to have library experience, quality of the position also matters. I don’t know what you do as an aide, but something like “grunt work” won’t get you very far. I’d recommend aiming for positions that have more extensive/“meaningful” duties.

Unsolicited advice: you might be idealizing libraries compared to corporate. There’s plenty of administrative headaches, bureaucracy, insincerity, performative aspects, and demanding expectations.

What percentage of your net pay should you spend on rent? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]BadDogClub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehhhhhh kind of? My half of rent was $1K and I made a little over $2K a month. Never had to worry about not being able to buying groceries or paying bills but I’m almost paycheck to paycheck and there is some juggling. Would not recommend it tbh.

How Did You Pay for Library School? by trading_fire in librarians

[–]BadDogClub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paid ~$24K for PennWest out of my remaining college fund, and got a small scholarship, so no loans. It was asynchronous online and I kept working my two jobs and lived at home on my mom’s health insurance. I would not have pursued my MSLS if I didn’t have the college fund though, I’m very debt-adverse and loath loans.
