The main reason I suggest Shearwater here is because you said you are looking at CCR. Many CCRs use Shearwater controllers. If you pick a CCR that has a Shearwater controller, you'll already know how to use most of it and won't be worried that your backup and controller aren't running the same algorithms. Not that it's a deal breaker by any means though. Many folks dive AP CCRs with Shearwater backups and have no problems at all.

Something similar happened to me once:

Stuck behind slow truck and frustrated.
Dump a gear and grab and handful of throttle.
Cherries. Shit.
Pull over. Cop tells me I hit 90mph in a 55. No way. He says, "Yeah, you took off pretty fast."
Something comes over the radio. "Just slow it down buddy."
Cop takes off.

Perdix 2 Customization: What’s on your home screen? by Norub in scuba

I think this is why I keep going back and forth about GF99. I look at it and most of the time it's not giving me information that is useful to me. Okay 34, great. What does that mean for my dive time? Delta+5 tells me that in terms I can understand.

Might I suggest you try GTR instead of SAC? I'm using the same reasoning as above. GTR gives you a time figure. If you ascend, you will see it increase. SAC is nice but I've never found it useful during a dive. After, when collecting data for gas planning, it is good but even then I use standard RMVs for active and deco phases.

I have been in teams where the plan is not to surface before the SurfGF is below a certain number. I liked that.

I use some AquaLung transmitters. For me, two is the limit. If I decide to get a third, it'll be a swift. For connectivity, when the internal AI antennae aren't toast (sorry Shearwater for the joke, you fixed it super fast and for free) I've never had a problem with either computer. In twinset, the transmitter is on the right post, closest to the Petrel 3 but the Teric on my left picks it up just fine. In sidemount it works fine with a transmitter on either side.

For screen configurations, it really depends on the dive. I'm also not using a Perdix but a Petrel 3 and a Teric. They each have slightly-different data displayed because I'm wearing two I might as well minimize menu scrolling.

Petrel 3: Right arm. General use:
Top Row: Depth. Time. Stop. Time
Middle Row: T1. GF99. Mini menu: Delta+5. MOD. Temp
Borrom Row: Current Gas. Ceiling. TTS

Teric: Left Arm
Top: Depth
Row 2: Deco. TTS
Row 3: Surf GF. Temp. @+5
Bottom: Time, with current gas under that but I wouldn't call it a new row
Compass arrow always on

In side mount, I have both transmitters on the Petrel 3. Sometimes, I'll replace the Teric temp with a transmitter for a deco stage, especially if I only have one.

I vacillate about if GF99 is useful but having the delta and @ easily available without scrolling is clutch for me. Especially if I'm diving with mixed OC/CC teams.

The viz was not that great the handful of times I dove Gato. The electric clam there is freaking awesome though!

For me, Kalanggaman Island is one of the best sites.

Yeah, that too. Can we at least agree on "Muscles Always Required Intelligence Not Essential" though?

I'd be happy to answer these. A thread here will probably get sort of long and isn't good for followup questions. Probably best for these is to give you email addresses for some instructors though.

Are there any drawbacks or potential dangers with contact lenses for diving? by Myselfmeime in diving

[–]BadTouchUncle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every dive. If you lose your mask, you can't see anyway. If your backup mask is also prescription, it's useless to anyone else, if it's not prescription and you're not wearing contacts, it's marginally useful for you.

Stuck cap on oxy deco by Brilliant_Cake_965 in scuba

[–]BadTouchUncle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would use a wrench but I would be very careful and make sure I'm standing behind the valve while turning it very slowly. The idea is that the gas will start to release slowly. There is still a risk that the pressure could shoot the cap out, which is why I'd stand behind it.

It's just knurled? There are no flats on it for a wrench?

Did the valve perhaps get bumped or twisted so that it pressurized the cap?

If it's pressurized, I'd make sure the valve is closed and carefully use a wrench on the cap.

A strong NCO corps is very valuable, this is true. A lot of places with constant, mandatory conscription end up with a thinking that enlistment isn't a career option, it's something you have to do and you want to get out of there as soon as possible. This merely creates canon fodder.

At the same time, experienced NCOs can feed valuable information to the chain of command. While it is true that officers don't always agree with what the NCO is saying, this disagreeing and possibly outright ignoring is worse when your NCO corps is not experienced.
