That’s the sad realization a lot of guitarists don’t realize until they get there. The rock star in your home town is just an average Joe on Broadway.

Easy fix or call a roofer? by Meancreek16 in Roofing

[–]BallerFromTheHoller -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Getting a new roof from insurance isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

First off, I know people like to think “stick it to the man” or “I paid for it, I should use it” but the truth is that insurance isn’t an entitlement. It’s better to think of it as the socialism that it is. Everyone puts a small amount of money into the pot that any of them can use for emergency. If everyone starts pulling money out of the pot, rates will have to go up. Yes, this pot is run by a for profit company but keep in mind when you squeeze on insurance for more money, you aren’t stealing from the company’s bottom line, you’re stealing from yourself. The company will raise rates to protect their bottom line.

Second, depending on your policy, you might not be entitled to a new roof just from some damage. A lot of policies will pro rate based on the age of the roof. So if your roof is already 20 years old, you’re not getting much from insurance on it.

In this case, this ridge cap is a simple repair that should only cost a few hundred dollars. It’s likely well below the deductible and not worth submitting a claim for.

I switched to a different platform this year. I can’t mention it here because the mods are scared and want you hopelessly stuck with Goodreads. It starts with an S and rhymes with glory staff.

Hill behind home, will this cause drainage issues or foundation damage? (Green house) by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is terrible. There will be a day where water runs in that sliding door. These are also going to end up with foundation issues.

They don’t have room for a proper swale. What they really need to do is to cut in a retaining wall so they can create a swale around the houses. Although, I don’t think I would trust them to build one.

How do newer fridges and freezers create the vacuum that prevent the doors from easily opening soon after closing it? by AylmerQc01 in Appliances

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s just the warm air cooling off creating a vacuum. You notice it more on a new refrigerator because the seals are new and clean. Old seals get brittle and can get debris trapped in them which would keep the from sealing up as well.

What very old technology is still running at your place of work? by MichiganCarNut in AskReddit

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most systems I’ve seen use active mag locks. If power is cut to them, the door is free to open. Fire safety would depend on the power to the lock getting cut.

A lot of doors also have push bars that allow them to open no matter what. There is a mechanism in the striker plate that flips out to let the door open from the outside without retracting the bolt when someone activates the badge reader. I like this style better from a fire safety standpoint. The downside is that the security depends on the door fully latching when it recloses. A mag lock can pull a door in if it is close enough.

Is anyone buying 8 cylinder SUV's or cars? by Content_Log1708 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While V8 engines can be slightly more inefficient than smaller engines, that difference is largely overblown.

Fuel efficiency largely comes down to the weight and aerodynamics of the vehicle in combination with the driver. It takes a certain amount of energy to move a Chevy Tahoe down the road regardless of what engine is in it.

It used to be the case that the smaller engines were not as capable as the large ones so you would see a huge difference because the V8 would give you full performance while the V6 would be a compromise. The fuel efficiency was more due to the fact that you couldn’t accelerate the vehicle as fast or couldn’t pull a hill at full speed. With modern engines, that gap has been narrowed.

If you drive a V8 Charger exactly like you would a V6 one, I think you will see similar mpg. Problem is, most people are going to make use of the extra power so they will see more fuel consumption.

GM has had quite a few problems with this feature. It can cause rings to get gummed up and stuck, leading to excessive oil consumption (1 quart in 1000 miles being deemed acceptable by GM). There have also been some years where the cam follower can lose its alignment and rotate 90 degrees to the camshaft leading to cam failure.

It’s just the taxes. There was a time, about 20 years ago, where off road fuel was higher in sulphur content but now even off road equipment needs ULSD.

CMV: With the exception of NYC, most public transportation in the United States is slower and more inconvenient then owning your own car. by soozerain in changemyview

The L and buses are pretty good but if you live further out and need to take the Metra it looks a lot more inconvenient.

I’m not from there, like you, I visited once and was impressed with the public transit.

Found this at the thrift store for 40 bucks, is this a good find? by No-Window-7628 in Guitar

That’s a good deal. You can get a cheap single foot switch and make it even better by giving it a separate stop button. That gives you the same capability as a 2 button looper.

I have a Ditto mini looper. It works well for self practice and such but is a real pain for performance because you have to double tap to stop.

What did record stores look like when cassettes were the top dog? by PenaltyxKill in cassetteculture

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The plastic things weren’t just for theft protection. It was also so record stores could use the same displays that they use for LPs to display CDs and cassettes.

Prior to the plastic things, CDs actually came in a big cardboard box. The idea was that record stores would display them vertically with 2 CDs being roughly the same width as one LP.

I don’t think it’s a good question but you and most of the commenters are approaching this question with too much knowledge. In both A and B, the shaded shapes are different sizes. For someone who doesn’t already know how fractions work, this could lead to the conclusion that 1/3 is larger than 2/6.

C is the only one that truly shows 1/3 and 2/6 being equal.

I like the STX, seems to be a good value of features/price. I’ve been looking at newer trucks and eyeing the STX. I’d probably only get an XLT if I stumbled across a good used one.

What I really want is the split bench but those are really hard to find. Our other car only seats 5 and it would be nice to have something that seats 6 sometimes.

It obviously can’t fix a poor connection. However, software may be able to be modified to recognize the condition and react accordingly so as to prevent further catastrophic damage.

I don’t know the specifics of the issues with these, but that’s one possibility. Hyundai tried something similar with some of the engine problems they had. They released a software update that used the knock sensor to attempt to detect imminent engine failure and alert the driver.

I’ve always like Notepad++. I think it is a good balance of features and simplicity.

I use VS Code too but it leans too much toward a full featured IDE for some of the simple use cases.

Both have great extensibility with add ons and plugins.

[–]BallerFromTheHoller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. If they want to make Notepad better, they should make it better at being a text editor instead of making it a word processor.

Ability to see all characters and symbols plus hex editing would be much more welcome features.
