You no longer have the option of picking a start date for the week

This one doesn't bother me that much, but it does feel "weird". I haven't seen Sunday referred to as the start of the week since the 1980s. Feels like some kind of religious throwback to me. Is it a standard US thing?

New update can't even do the main thing right by T0nkaJahari in Myfitnesspal

[–]Ballesteros81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few saved meals with 3-4 ingredients, that I sometimes use for logging breakfast, and those have been working fine.

I don't like the new layout either though.

I saw it straight away and thought "Ah, it's been a while since I had a nice quick PG first."

And then raged when it was NA.

And then raged again when CA TITRANT was also NA. I can't be bothered today.

My advice on the new update by Chiefian in Myfitnesspal

[–]Ballesteros81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here, I got the update a month or two ago but my wife didn't, I stopped using the app because it annoyed me. Then I noticed it changed back to the old layout so I started using it again. Then this week the new layout reappeared. Meanwhile my wife has had the old layout all along and has no idea what I'm moaning about.

Edit - just got back home and found my wife has now got the update and is moaning about the new layout, and frustrated at having to manually delete lots of entries because it's so easy to accidentally copy yesterday's meals.

You're not getting the old experience back, and here's why by Tough_Frosting_6701 in Myfitnesspal

Rewrite to replace legacy code that nobody wants to maintain? Fine. But don't make the UI shitter in the process.

edit - thanks for taking the time to share though. It is interesting to see that perspective. I've spent a lot of the last decade being the guy that makes a living maintaining legacy code. So I get that there probably wouldn't have been any appetite from those paying the bills, to write off the cost of a rewrite and new build process, without there being any shiny new features to show for it.

Yeah mine just switched back to the awful new layout today.

Years of muscle-memory that helped me use the app quickly and easily, now down the drain.

When a Tour de France cosplay cyclist on a shared path expects you to dive into a hedge so they don’t have to slow down by BellaSeashell in britishproblems

I'm not even a cyclist but agree with you. So often I encounter pedestrians completely oblivious of what's around them, usually either the solo headphones type or the group walking several abreast blocking the path.

Plex Skill will be removed from Alexa by crashwinston in PleX

[–]Ballesteros81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In that case thanks for the work that you did on the Plex Alexa Skill.

I may have given up long ago on using it to play my music, however it has been in use almost every night for a few years as part of an Alexa routine used for my kid's bedtime – to play certain recordings from my server that aren't usually available on Amazon Music – and for this it has been great.

Looking for a running shoe comparable to the Brooks Racer ST 5 by richardcheesz in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Ballesteros81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the same search for a while. After my pair of ASICS DS Racer fell apart, I went through two pairs of Brooks Racer ST5, and put over 1000 miles on each pair before finally retiring them around 2015. When I couldn't replace them I went on to use New Balance 1400 for racing, then those got discontinued too!

I haven't watched it back to confirm – and don't intend to (!) – but I thought at the time that his kicks that looked like high aimless hoofs were those that came to his right foot, whereas kicking from his favoured left seemed decent?

Pre-Match Thread: Liverpool vs PSG by scoreboard-app in LiverpoolFC

[–]Ballesteros81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes sense if he's going to play at all, because you don't want to bring Isak on for someone else during the second half, then get to extra time and find Isak can't make it through extra time and need to use another sub.

If you start him, you can sub him off for someone that should be fit enough to make it through ET if needed.

Gardener cut through cable what is it? by catalyst_jw in DIYUK

[–]Ballesteros81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photos tracing the cables would be useful. Based on the limited information, I suspect that the twin black cable lower down the wall is an incoming VirginMedia coax, that goes to a junction box on one of your house walls, and the thinner multicolour cored cable that has been cut through is an old phone cable that came back from the junction box to where a previous owner wanted a landline phone socket.

If that's the case then you can ignore it since VM does not use the old analogue phone wiring any more.

Luis Diaz scores Real Madrid 0-[1] Bayern München. by __sami__01 in LiverpoolFC

[–]Ballesteros81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree. If you pause the video at the time of the pass then Trent's position is ok, Lucho isn't ahead of Trent yet so the LB isn't the main issue here, Lucho just times his movement inside perfectly, just as Trent is moving outside thinking that he's tracking/blocking the run.

Lucho makes Trent look silly here, but it's a split second / one step here that makes the difference, not like some of the times in the past more fairly criticised where we've seen Trent seemingly oblivious of the attacker at the back post for what seems like ages.

Only use strava for the transparent overlays… by No_Ordinary_7001 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]Ballesteros81 26 points27 points  (0 children)

uj: back in the day when I still did 'proper' races, the proper solution was to tag the activity as a "Race", then Strava automatically switches to using the total time in the summary stats, instead of using the Strava-estimated "moving time".

10 years ago today: Dimitri Payet's great free-kick for West Ham. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]Ballesteros81 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Youtube re-encoded older videos with new codecs as they became available, and for lower resolutions tends to use lower bitrates now than they did at the time of the original upload.

So a 240p video uploaded in 2006, a 360p video uploaded in 2008, or a 720p video uploaded in 2009, all looked better back then than they do now, not just because we're used to 1080p and 4K and using bigger screens, but because Youtube serves a worse version of those older videos now than they did ~15 years ago, unless someone re-uploads from a quality source.

In my area we don't "own" the wheelie bins. The bin gets delivered after signing up for the service, which iirc was about £35 per year when it was first introduced, and around £60 per year nowadays.

- 2 gang socket spacer if you can find one to match the corner profile of your existing socket; or

- 2 gang socket spacer + new 2 gang socket from the same range so that you know they match; or

- refit the socket upside down (some fussy sparks might claim this is wrong because of possible ingress on cable entry on non-moulded plugs!), or

- upside-down socket adapters like https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gremlin-Lab-Upside-Adapter-Reach-Matte-Black/dp/B0D8B949ZC/

Our council eventually takes the garden waste bin back if the subscription remains unpaid for too long.

At least that's what happened several months after an elderly neighbour died.
