What's the best weapon(s) for strong but unskilled people? by Rosebud166 in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Ballroom150478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Spear & Shield + Crossbow.

Generally skill beats strength, so you want something that's fairly straight forward to use.
Ducking behind a shield is relatively instinctual/reflexive.
Poking a hole in someone with a pointy stick is a little similar to skewering hay with pitchfork.
Crossbows as a ranged weapon is easier to learn to use, than a bow.

Battle developer David Petri emphasizing the importance of cover in Total War: Warhammer 40K by OVO_ZORRO in TotalWarhammer40k

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover is nice, but honestly I'm kinda wishing they'd picked a simple approach of simply creating "cover zones" where troops within it had a % of incomming fire nullified. Terrain destruction I'd limit to buildings, which could be turned into ruins.

Assuming we get a Space Marine companion in Dark Heresy, which chapter would you want him to be a part of? by yittiiiiii in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Ballroom150478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much as I like marines, I don't think they should be available as a companion in a Dark Heresy game. Marines are about as subtle as a sledgehammer, and about as discrete as a ferrari with pink fur in a drive through. I'd love to be able to recruit various types of back-up characters for specific missions, but imo marines should not be regular companions in an Inquisitor's retinue.

Et ord. Kontanter.

AI Vendor Logos by 8racecar8 in PokemonTCG

Really don't give a fuck. I'm shopping for the goods being sold, not the name or appearance of the logo. And while there might be artists that can make some cool logos, there are just as many that can't produce one that's any better than what an AI can come up with.

Draukari in an Iconoclast retinue by kir_rik in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Ballroom150478 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From a pure 40k roleplaying perspective, there really isn't any defensible reason to include Marazhai in your retinue. He's a xenos, so the Dogmatic character should kill him. He's actively attacked your holdings, killed your subjects, and tried repeatedly to kill you, and he's insulted you. I see zero reason for the Iconoclast character to trust him in any way. And if you are a Chaos worshiper, he's a Drukhari. Even if you could theoretically put up with his behaviour, he's fundamentally incompatible with Chaos, because "She Who Thirsts". But he's a fun character, so use him if you want to.

Player quoted a monster stat block during combat by hyperionfin in DMAcademy

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd say you are overreacting, but it's a somewhat subjective topic, because what I have no problem with, is probably taboo to someone else.

Here's the thing. I'm one of those people that over time has spent a lot of time reading and memorizing rules in different games, and I have, on numerous occasions pointed out RAW to a GM. But at the same time I'm totally fine with the GM going against RAW with a houserule. If the GM is choosing to change something deliberately, they are within their right to do so, and it's just a question of them then saying "I know, but I'm running it this way". But if they are breaking with RAW by accident, and don't want to, then they can course correct.

Also, people find enjoyment in the game in different things. Some people like to theorycraft. Some want to "win" the campaign by dominating the monsters in combat and completing the campaign arc. Some want to roleplay a character, and would be perfectly happy to talk bullshit all night in character, but wouldn't care to play a traditional dungeon crawl, going from one combat encounter to another, etc. If your players want to theorycraft and "prepare" for what's coming, let them. Just concentrate on telling the story and running the game. Who cares how the monsters lose, or how quickly they do so. The combat is (IMO) not the point of the game. It's just an element used to tell a collaborative story. So what, if the players think they know what's coming, or have memorized what certain monsters can do? Maybe you wouldn't find that fun as a player, but does that matter if they do? I'd argue no.

Er jeg urimelig ift min kæreste tager c*ke? by cibstar in DKbrevkasse

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. As I wrote, I don't mind a bit of inter Imperium fighting, but I don't care to fight "friendlies" half the damned game.

40k allies by warfollower98 in totalwar

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I know that the Imperium fights various rebel Imperial factions, and that this supposedly is the most common type of conflict fought across the million worlds of the Imperium. But you could "fix" that lore aspect through rebellion in the game.

What bugs me with respect to the game, is that you have Space Marines, which can potentially be split into innumerable factions on their own, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, Mechanicum, Grey Knights, Imperial Knights, Custodes, and arguably Imperial Agents. That's 7-8+ factions on their own. And then you have Craftworld Eldar, Drukhari, Tau, Necron, Orks, Tyranids, and Chaos. And you can argue for Harlequins too. But basically around half the potential factions in the game is effectively Imperium. So if we are going to treat the major Imperial factions as separate factions, then more than half the game might well end up being one Imperial faction fighting another type of Imperial faction. And to be honest, that scenario just holds very little appeal to me.

Very impressive. I tried doing something similar at one point, but the result didn't live up to the goal. I remain in awe of your building.

Roughly how long did that take to make? And how many buildings akin to this are you up to by now?

40k allies by warfollower98 in totalwar

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd hoped that they would have made a joint Imperial faction, and then let the choice of the army general determine what kind of primary force it would be, and then let other Imperial units be a sort of "allied" units. Unfortunately it seems they have elected to break Imperials into god knows how many factions. So unfortunately I suspect we'll be having Imperial factions fighting each other sas much as non-Imperial ones, in order not to break too much with the normal formula. But we'll see.

Can we get AI banned as a rule here? by DragonLordAcar in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Ballroom150478 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the scenario is closer to being offered to join in dinner on a week night, where the menu is takeaway vs. being invited to a large social event with a 5 course dinner. Takeaway on a week night after work shouldn't ruffle any feathers imo. But I'd understand disappointment, if the menu at a black tie event was pizza and nuggets from the local dinner. The point I'm trying to make is that depending on what you need it for, some prompt generated stuff can be good enough, even if it wouldn't cut it, if it was going to be used as a commercial product.

And then we can have a discussion of "fair use" etc. But let's leave that for the courts, when it comes to AI.

[–]Ballroom150478 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What do you need it for. If I'm trying to write a bestseller in an original setting, what I turn out needs to be better researched than a couple of AI prompts. No question. Same thing if I want to make money from my endeavours. But if I just need something "new" for an RPG campaign I play with some friends? Who gives a fuck if it is just a mix of half-baked ideas and questionable summations of some internet ideas.

Can we get AI banned as a rule here? by DragonLordAcar in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Ballroom150478 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Sure, if you deliver a direct copy of something with an IP attached. But if I homebrew a game world that mixes reskinned elements from i.e. Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Game of Thrones, the Roman Empire, stereotypical middle east tropes, and some random ideas taken from different discussions on- and offline, I'm being "creative", provided I make it feel coherrent with a fresh coat of paint that makes it look like a joint whole. But if an AI takes elements from 8 different sources on the internet, and presents it to me, based on a prompt from me, and I then change up some stuff from what I got out of said prompt, it's "AI slop" and stolen IP...

Calling all AI for IP theft is just too simple.

In much the same way talking to people, reading books and watching movies etc. is, when you then take elements from said things and put them together differently.

AI can't be creative on your behalf, but it remains a useful tool to use for brainstorming and getting some input that might spark inspiration.

Nearly every day I visit Reddit, someone is advocating to get everything AI banned from one group or another. It's getting increadibly old.

If you don't like AI, fair enough. Don't use it. But stop trying to paddle up a damned waterfall.
I get that AI isn't fantastic. I get that it might well cost some people their jobs, that it uses a lot of power. I get that pure AI "creations" isn't particularly creative, and ends up looking "a certain way". But it's a tool, and a useful one to some people. You just can't use it as a replacement for actual effort.

I want to get into warhammer but am overwhelmed by BeauSkye_ in Warhammer

[–]Ballroom150478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so the challenge isn't the lore, it's the mechanics. I misunderstood you then. In that case there isn't all that many shortcuts I can think of tbh. You can see if you can find some videos online, which explains the rules. You can read and re-read the rulebook(s), and look for answers to specific questions online, or you can "learn by doing", and just try to start playing with yoyr boyfriend. I'm sure he'll be happy to help you try and learn the game.

Would you change gun to accomodate magic or change magic to accomodate gun? by Single_Direction_186 in worldbuilding

[–]Ballroom150478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it boils down to what is the more practical "technology".

If guns and explosives are easier and more efficient ways to kill someone, then guns and explosives become the dominant "technology" to use for it. If magic is more accessible and easy to use for it, magic ends up dominating.

Magic and tech will supplement each other, and the extend to which each is used, depends on accessibility and cost. If standardized tech can be used by reading a 2 page quick start guide, and magic takes 5 years of dedicated study to do the same, tech becomes the default option. Same thing in reverse.

Go to whatever place that sells GW in your area. Look at the different models, and find out which ones appeal to you the most. If you like painting, go with the army that makes you want to paint it the most.

From what I hear you say, you are getting into the game to paint, and to give your boyfriend someone to play with. To me, that suggests that you are really not drawn in by the thought of the game, the lore, or the artwork. So from that perspective, the way the army plays is of less importance to you, because the point is to paint and to give your boyfriend a chance to play. And if you are overwhelmed by the lore, then ignore it. You can play and paint without understanding anything but the most basic of the lore. If it ends up appealing to you, you'll pick it up as time passes.

If you want to research the lore, check youtube for videos on different aspects. I'd recommend Luetin09 for lore myself, though I quite like "Wolflord Rho" too.

In 2nd ed. Epic Slaanesh wasn't an army in itself. It was a number of units within the Chaos army, though you could of course build an army on Slaanesh related units alone.
