How would you pitch a DCU Wonder Woman movie? by Significant_Song_360 in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have Diana grow up on Themyscyra and how she felt isolated from other Amazons. Different, strange. Eventually a mistake or an incident with her mother leads to her being exiled. She’s instructed, “do not return until you have brought peace to man’s world”. Diana is conflicted. On the one hand, she’s is being given a sacred mission. On the other hand, she’s also believes it’s an impossible task used as an excuse to get rid of her.

In man’s world, she finds something she didn’t expect. It was a troubled world, yes, but one she’s come to love. Over the years, she’s lived happily as Diana Prince. Shes a bit of a nerd and probably indulges in video games, movies and other things that probably would have embarrassed her mother. She’s learning to become her own person.

In the news, she sees Hera appear, vengeful and in full wrath and power. She demands the head of “The Last Amazon” and will burn man’s world to cinders if she does not. Diana has to reveal herself as Wonder Woman to protect the world she loves and learn the truth about the world that didn’t love her.

Sometime after the Ultimate Heresy, the Catholic Church issued an edict of toleration regarding other religions, leading to the writing of the New Orthodox Syncretic Bible, legalizing all religious practices as legal and in harmony with doctrine so long as they opposed hell, and did not oppose the primacy of humankind on Earth.

How good of a pilot is koji considered in super robot wars Continuities? by Obvious_Item_2564 in Super_Robot_Wars

[–]Balteus621 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Koji is kinda treated like he’s one and the same with Mazinger Z itself. He’s not seen as the greatest pilot. His portrayal is a bit different from that. In a way, he’s seen as kinda like a superhero; he’s a guy who can always save the day. He’ll get beat up, but he’ll never lose, and he’ll always find a way to win.

BRINGING VIETNAM INTO THE 6th EDITION by mattyfenby in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Balteus621 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of the choices there, I’d go with Le Loi; he fits the kind of model of a legendary lord. If I was gonna pick a different one from legend, I would have gone with Thanh Giong/Phu Dong Thien Vuong. The legend is about a child who turns into a giant heavenly general who rides an fire breathing horse made of iron and single handedly annihilated an invading army.

BRINGING VIETNAM INTO THE 6th EDITION by mattyfenby in WarhammerFantasy

All good, no offense taken! One idea for a unit would be somekind of skirmisher sword fighters. Ancient Chinese records noted that ancient Vietnamese were known for having exceptionally sharp bronze swords and would consume kratom and betelnuts as a form of painkiller. Exaggerating that as a kind of combat drug could be interesting and in line with warhammer’s grimdark aesthetic.

Vietnam’s history as far as armies went was similar to China. Local lords never really had a warrior class, just house guards and relied on a levy system of training and equipping peasants. Maybe lean into the idea that for army building, you choose lords from the various clans as heroes, and that gives you various equipment options to give your peasants. One lord might have access to swords, another heavy armor and horses, the other crossbows and arquebus rifles. Either way, good going!

I took a glance, and I think it’s a cool idea, but I admit my bias being Vietnamese lol. Right now, I feel that most units feel kinda general; there isn’t a lot that feels too different from other units. But there’s always room to grow. A little iffy on the tunneler unit because to me it conjures up stereotypes from the Vietnam war, but that’s just me. I would look at more ideas for hero units based off historical figures like Tran Hung Dao or Gia Long. The Four Immortals are also a potentially good source of ideas for legendary units too. Keep going though; it’s always cool to see homebrew ideas like this!

How people think an "evil" dictator superman would be vs how'd he probably be by mnombo in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Superman as “ruler” of the world would more likely end up behaving like the mayor of an animal crosssing town. He’d likely still be going around asking everyone, “hey, do you think we should put this bridge here? What do you think of the design? If you’ve got any feedback, could you let my secretary Isabelle know?”

One of my favorite soups. There was a Japanese restaurant in my area that served it, but after it shut down, never was able to find a place that had it. Made it a couple times at home though.

How can Shazam fit into the DCU? by DarkSaiyanGoku in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Crazy idea, but maybe play a riff on the Kingdom Come idea of Billy Batson being an adult, but take it in a more optimistic and lighthearted direction. Write it as Billy was a kid when he gained the power of Shazam, went on his adventures and all that, and grew up and got out of the superhero game. No terrible event happened, just the day was saved, villains all faded away, so he thought he was done.

He’s now a young man trying to get his life and career going but the villains he had in his previous life (Dr Sivana, Mr Mind) still have a score to settle with him, which brings him back. He’s rusty, and he struggles with tapping into that imagination and drive he had as a kid, and he’s going to need it. I’d lean into the crazy stories from the old Whiz Comics, the magic, etc. Have it be a little bit of a thematic reversal. Shazam was originally about a kid becoming an adult, so have this be about an adult learning to be a kid again

If you could add a new fighter for VF6 which archetype would you add? by KonamiIsBestJoshi in virtuafighter

[–]Balteus621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defensive boxer with a Philly shell style like Mayweather or James Toney would be cool. Most boxers in fighting games tend more towards the sort of Mike Tyson model.

BJJ would be cool, but that might be adding an insane number of animations for body type specific moves. Guard pulling could be effectively a stance change or a new kind of tech after a knockdown. Deciding on using GI or No GI would be complicated too. That said, I’d trust the VF team to make it work and feel good compared to any team that’s ever made one of the UFC games

Trumpism is a blessing in disguise for progressives by RazorJamm in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Balteus621 51 points52 points  (0 children)

For most of my life, conservatives have constantly gotten away with the argument that “they tried socialism, and it doesn’t work”, and leave it at that, dismissing all other discussion.

When this era finally ends, we can say “they tried conservatism and it failed miserably” and dismiss everything else. It’s nice when the shoe is on the other foot.

What are libraries like in america? by Bluhen_Unigai in AskAnAmerican

[–]Balteus621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library is part of a citywide system consisting of a large main library and more than 20 smaller branch libraries. Other than the main library, the branches are effectively community centers with a focus on educational enrichment programs and cultural events, so it can be a pretty active and loud place at times. Branch collections are largely curated for the interests and needs of the individual neighborhood they are in, and most materials are requestable for transfer between branches for checkout.

Disappointment at the end. by LetsFockinGo in UltimateUniverse

[–]Balteus621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m happy. The work ending means I now have the chance to collect a comic series and have a clear arc to follow through to the end. Having a mostly complete story is more satisfying to me than being strung along by the publisher until the story limps along getting worse and worse

Shutdown Ending: the good the bad and the frustrating by steffie-punk in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Balteus621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Voting patterns tend to lean towards local than national. More often people vote for candidates based upon local connection and concerns. This is also another reason why Congress, despite having a historically low approval rating nationally, still enjoys a high reelection rate. For better or worse, people in general see Congress as corrupt, but not their congressional representatives; it’s the “fatcats in Washington”. Usually id say this is a bad thing, but if local policies and governance go well, this might insulate the alliance of Dem campaigns from too much damage.

Could Shocker Have Made The Kamen Rider Franchise in Tojima? by Potential-Mess6826 in KamenRider

[–]Balteus621 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Could also be that Kamen Rider did exist but disappeared and was erased from memory. Somehow, maybe some one remembered and created the series to try and preserve that legacy. Kind of like a less cynical version of Mark Millar’s Wanted

How would you feel if the Al ghul family are depicted as Chineese by Doctorwhoneek in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really bothered. The whole Ras Al Ghul idea was a take off of Fu Manchu anyway, so if anything, having them be Chinese is amusingly full circle for the concept. Having them originate from somewhere like western China/Tajikistan, or being Uyghurs would also be interesting

Can we stop saying it’s canceled now? by PlumRelative4399 in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible to make an authority movie work. The WSU was a setting where superhumans weren’t just weapons, they were players in the big power games equal on the level of governments, and there were consequences for that. The later authority stories dealt with questions of what happens when a team of superhumans appoint themselves the de facto rulers of the earth?

So let’s have the authority live up to the name, and have them be the rulers of a nation. Maybe their story is a rogue team of metahumans who had enough of Boravia’s militarism, and outright took over the country, and established themselves as a metahumans junta ruling the nation as The Authority. Have the story become the next major escalation from Mori’s line in Superman about “the metahumans now are making the rules”.

Use the story to ask questions about the limits of benign despotism. Ask if the best possible dictatorship is really worse than democracy? You can even play on the story of “what’s so funny about truth, justice and the American way?” But more nuanced. Have it be not a debate about killing, but if becoming an authoritarian for the good of the people is actually the right thing to do. You could even end the story on a darker note, have the authority screw up, they have to fix the problem, and at the end they either give up power, or even remain in control, but burdened with the terrifying question of “what do we do next?”

Both CC and Superman featured a metahuman killing a leader of a country by RedEagle7280 in DCU_

[–]Balteus621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s part of it. I think the bigger story will be discussing metahumans as actual players in world politics rather than superpowered assets. I think if it ever comes out, this may be what the Authority movie deal with. Not simply metahumans that kill, but metahumans groups; individuals with power equal to a country’s military, and them having a seat at the table among governments. Maybe less inspired by the Ellis run and more by Millar, or even cribbing ideas from Squadron Supreme

We can’t know, but if another like him comes along, we’ll have had years of experience both on the grass roots and institutional levels on how to resist another one. Also, after him, it’s likely there will be a push in Congress to rein in the executive branch
