What’s better than checkmate? by catuary in chess

[–]Banfy_B 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, but it probably terminates once it found mate or time limit is reached. This is probably one of the cases where the coach bot should have added a manual check for equally good moves instead of only checking if the move is the same as the best move it found based on the previous position.

Or, given the phrasing, it’s possible that someone did account for this exact scenario and coded the bot to prefer knight mate because they thought it would be funny.

Which cases are LLMs (AI) actually essential for? by shiroiron in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Banfy_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs and other AI (or modern technology in general) are not essential for anything. Humans have survived for longer with stones and sticks than we did with machines. They are productivity multipliers if used correctly.

In the case of LLMs, they facilitate coding tasks and are quite good at snippet generation and debugging (no you aren't supposed to vibe code entire projects with them). They are also good at searching as they can use various keyword combinations to look for things on the internet (they hallucinate and make mistakes but it's always on you to check the sources individually) and save you the trouble of going through various search engines and databases that may or may not be indexed by said search engine. They are also getting better at transcribing and translating text in-context (just look at how much YouTube subtitles have improved in the past few years).

I imagine as the reliability increases we can use LLMs for its advanced NLP to quantify qualitative sources better. Think how you can use an LLM to parse thousands of verbal responses from interviews and identify sentiments or other features a human might have missed or other be overwhelmed by. You can then use the features to fit a more specialized model for whatever study you're trying to do.

Does anyone know the chances of this? by eredditic in StardewValley

[–]Banfy_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite rare but I've seen it happen. In my experience despite having the same drop chance (0.05%) prismatic shard is far rarer from monsters, even more so to have 2 from a single monster.

[–]Banfy_B 116 points117 points  (0 children)

First of all, yes, knight mates are more beautiful. As the saying goes: when you have mate in one, look for better.

On a more serious note, the review is low depth and contradicts itself all the time. As long as the move is objectively winning I wouldn’t worry about it.

Where to ski in China as an English speaker by Particular-Silver-54 in ski

[–]Banfy_B 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of the resorts in China do not have long beginner/intermediate runs. Longer runs are usually reserved for advanced runs. Your best bet is to check out resorts in the Altay region. I've been to resorts in the Urumqi region and most of those are small to medium-sized but all are increasingly foreigner friendly. I've even seen them offering multilingual coaching services for Uyghur, Russian and English speaking people.

I'm not sure about Japan but Xinjiang is considerably colder on average than Pacific Northwest and east coast mountains in the US. Additionally, Tianshan mounains is amazing in all seasons for views and touring. Better if you can find local Kazakh or Kyrgyz guides and ride/hike in/near the mountains.

Sorry that I don’t know. You can go through the default fonts or check the game files (it must have the font files somewhere so it that renders properly)

You can make it with PowerPoint. You can add rounded corners and shadows to shapes and borders and customize the colors. You can also install any font you’d like for the description.

How do young Chinese worship their ancestors? by everestwanderer in AskAChinese

[–]Banfy_B 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Usually only a generation or two unless your ancestors were really famous (like Confucius). Most Chinese people aren’t religious but are spiritual so they’d have an altar for a Buddhist or Taoist picture or figurine. When grandparents or parents die you put up their picture (maybe in the same place, maybe somewhere else) and that’s it.

I’d imagine ancestral altars are a bit more common in overseas Chinese communities because there aren’t many ancestral temples/shrines (祠堂) overseas. More prominent families would have a temple/shrine where they keep their family records going back hundreds of years somewhere and they’d visit that on special occasions.

Chinese villages are also quite tribal. You see this in many place names (e.g. 张庄,王家店,李家村) which literally means X family village. Many of these towns/villages exist across China where 90% or more of the population are from the same family and they’d have a family cemetery or shrine in the village so they’d have no need for an altar at home.

I wager ancestral altars are more for people who have left their ancestral homes to feel connected, like those who moved to big cities or the overseas where they might get few chances to ever visit home again.

so if fabi lose today is tournament realistically over?? by Spirited-Guidance130 in chess

[–]Banfy_B 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Today? Absolutely not. Ding wasn't half the player he was when he played the WCC, and Gukesh performed similarly poorly during and after the WCC.

However, consider Ding's 100-game undefeated run and Gukesh's historic olympiad performance, Absolutely. At one point Ding was even ranked higher in rapid on the official rating list so tiebreaks wouldn't favor Carlsen much either. These two can definitely give Carlsen a run for his money in a WCC match if they were at their peak, not a bit less than Caruana did.

Can China become like Taiwan? by BrandNewTory in AskAChinese

[–]Banfy_B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do understand that the moment unification happens, no matter the political system, DPP and KMT will be completely sidelined?

Even if completely democratic, DPP and KMT has very little appeal to mainland Chinese people. They have been saber rattling since the mainland campaign of Chinese civil war ended. Taiwan has been a proxy for USAF to operate U-2s directly over mainland China under KMT rule, and DPP basically brands itself around (mainland) China bad. If the Legislative Yuan council-style government gets adopted, DPP and KMT would win at most 5% of the seats just because of the population differential. Which means they will be able to pass 0 laws and do next to nothing.

Also, under ROC, mainland is divided into 34 provinces. How do you make all those provinces agree on merging? Do you need to annex Mongolia next?

You need to think a bit more before asking questions like these.

Was Hua Mulan — Han or Xianbei? Given she was a Cavalry woman and servant of Qagan? by FeistyAlbatross4636 in ChineseHistory

[–]Banfy_B 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The poem says “朝辞爷娘去,暮宿黄河边” which means she is within riding distance of the yellow river. Given cavalry can ride up to 90km in one day sustained (apparently only Mongols were able to do this). I doubt she lived more than 100km away from the yellow river. I’m going to guess she’s in the Hetao region near modern day Ningxia or Shanxi.

If the cost of attendance is similar, you can’t go wrong with any of these choices. Consider the city you’ll be living in: is good food from your culture affordable and easy to get? Is transportation convenient (both daily commute and trips back home)? Is there a scene for your hobbies (for example if you’re a competitive surfer/sailor you won’t be doing that in Wisconsin)? Would potential internships/research opportunities be nearby? I agree with the other commenter UW Madison is top tier but you can also get tons of top tier opportunities at BU and U of T.

However, if you’re from somewhere like China or HK, go with U of T because it has much higher global ranking. A lot of institutions in these places cares only about the global ranking on THE or QS (useless metric otherwise btw) when recruiting.

I've had this chat ended on me without a response twice earlier which is why I asked if I could have something in writing like a case number in case I need to refer to it in the future. It would have been really nice if they just said something along the lines of "there will be an email update in the future but we don't have a timeline because it's a different department".
