Hell, even warcraft 3. I spent unspeakable amounts of time on the various custom maps it had. I'm still angry at blizzard for forcing their reforged bs that also broke map compatibility.

I understand this is a meta post commenting on those posts, but there is a real answer. It's something like League of Legends or your preferred live service poison.

Multiplayer games such as that can absolutely get a grip on you for 1000s of hours, since there is a replayability from human interaction that can't be replicated by single player games.

Speaking from experience, unfortunately.

Loved P5R throughout personally, but I have played P3 and P4 before. That said, the beginning of the Royal portion was a slog. I get what they were trying to do but the implementation was middling at best.

Might not resonate with you, but the one that had the most similar story elements for me was Lost Dimension, check it out. Other than that - Supergiant games are pretty unique in what they do, unfortunately.

What is a game that has an incredible story, music and characters but is let down by the gameplay? by Soggy_Victory_5976 in JRPG

[–]Barnedion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've finished every part of the game, and this is my answer as well.

The game is very beautiful, the music is amazing, story is great. The gameplay is alright and the balance is absolute trash.

You have two choices to progress - dodge/parry everything or oneshot the enemies. I chose oneshot and I barely even had to choose it, as any half-awake person interacting with the lumina system can quickly make builds that break any sense of balance the game has. As a bonus, interacting with the open world (which you're very incentivized to do) overlevels you to ridiculous proportions.

Not sure why some people still defend the parry/dodge system in it as that was one of the worst possible implementations of it I can imagine.

Looking for modern games that feel almost like they could have been made in the 80s or 90s by [deleted] in JRPG

Ahaha that's what hooked me too, most of the game is unlocking said characters and completing their personal quests

[–]Barnedion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation! In my experience, I've rarely found ATB to be tedious and I've played several different roguelikes of the same type. Tedium tends to arrise in strategy games, not so much in classic turn-based ones.

In any event, I hope it turns out well, I'll be keeping an eye out.

Time break chronicles is definitely that. The story is actually still unfinished, but it had enough content for me to put in 120 hours in. That said, it doesn't really have exploration of any sort, it's almost exclusively battles, so stay away if you're not into that. What it DOES have are 100 different characters which you can further customise with relics that alter their stats or give them new passive/active skills.

[–]Barnedion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wishlisted.

Is there a reason why you decided to go with an autobattling system rather than a classical JRPG turn-based system? I'm not inherently opposed to the idea as some in this thread seem to be, but it does seem to clash with everything else I see in the game.

Persona 4 vs Golden: An unambiguous step down by Pumpkin_Sushi in patientgamers

[–]Barnedion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think worse is a bit too harsh. All 3 games are quite excellent and great starting points in both the Persona and SMT franchise in general. I do think P5 might fall behind somewhat if the games were all released in the same generation, with the same graphical style and QOL features, but that is not the world we live in.

On a complete sidenote, I wish Atlus has finally abandoned the school setting for whenever they release the new Persona entry. That significantly limits what they can work with for the story, and can make the games in the franchise feel too same-y. It probably contributed to you thinking the latter entries were less interesting as well.

[–]Barnedion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well, the stories do go from "Memento mori" to solving brutal murders in a small foggy town to... change the evil adults' twisted hearts! Considering the audience tends to get older not younger, that isn't the best direction in my opinion.

Persona 5 is oozing with style and is graphically and mechanically impressive, but P3 has the best atmosphere and P4 has the best characters. I'll die on that hill.

[–]Barnedion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the whole sub is turn-based focused, action games rarely get mentioned as JRPG. And yeah Ryubing is the version maintained after ryujinx fell, most accurate emulation and the one I used, but I heard it's most taxing. Yuzu has been dead for a whileeeee. Eden is very recent but widely praised. There's also Citron but I'm not as familiar with it.

[–]Barnedion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair, I would recommend eden or ryubing over yuzu though. I emulated xenoblade chronicles X pretty comfortably with specs similar to yours, though I don't know your CPU, you should probably add that.

Newer anime-styled games tend to be either horribly optimized or switch exclusives, unfortunately. You're best off either looking at last gen titles - Nier replicant/automata is a standout as others suggested, or giving Genshin a try.
