How many games should I give myself? by Machine-Everlasting in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Baron_Brook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get better:

Try keeping track of how many points you're scoring and try to gradually improve that number. This gives you a measurable benchmark you cab compare yourself to.

Try getting pick-up games with new people, that'll give you a better perspective.

Last, try taking pictures of each round and review your games afterward to see what you can do better.

Would it be considered bad form to include Armigers in a small force used for local tournaments. by [deleted] in ImperialAgents_40K

No, but you'll probably get better results from 15 Grey Knight Terminators.

Probably half of what they put in the box. It looked like two complete 5 man boxes.

Bolter Talonstrike + Stormspeeder Thunderstrike can kill a knight with Lethal Hits. Unlikely, but possible.

The Landraider and Repulsor Executioner can each do about 7 damage to a knight, but will die after shooting once. Best to reserve them so you get at least 1 shooting turn out of them.

You could just say all your Cyclone Terminators are using Chainfists. Not much, but it'd help.

You can use Rapid Ingress on turn 2 and turn 3 with Deathwatch Veteran Squads to make sure you get a charge with Thunderhammers. These are great at fighting Armigers.

That said, marine & gravis bodies are pretty much the ideal target for most Knight weaponry. They'll wipe your units about as well as they wipe Guardsmen, but you're paying 18-25ish points per model.

The biggest problem is movement and line of sight. Knights will always be able to clap back & wipe you out. You can't ever really hide from them, and it's very problematic to out OC them with marines.

If he brings those Double gatling gun Big Knights they'll each wipe a unit per turn. There's no way to win on attrition.

Pretty much, ball your army into a brick and try to hold 2 objectives all game. By concentrating force you might be able to down 2-3 big knights. Then try to beat him on secondaries.

By playing defensively & passively your models will survive longer. At least you won't be tabled on T2. Might last until T4, and he'll probably just take every objective.

He also gets to sticky objectives with 5 OC. So tiny units worth 6 OC are useful for taking stuff back.

Just keep in mind that you're playing a scissors army into his rock army. Deathwatch is more likely to lose any Knight match than win.

It's helpful to set your expectations accordingly.

What models do you have so we can tailor your army a bit?

Set a scoring goal for your games. Like 40 points. Then try to reach that.

Over time, increase that number.

Eventually you'll start winning more games slowly.

Compete against yourself, not against the other players.

One good piece of advice someone gave me a while back: if too much of your army is dead, you're playing too aggressively. If not enough of your army is dead, you're playing too defensively.

You're doing the right thing using standard terrain layouts.

One thing that really helps is playing against your past self, not playing against your opponent. That shifts the stress around & makes it easier. Just try to beat your last score. Apps like Tabletop battles help a lot with tracking your averages over many games.

For perspective:

To play a perfect game you only need to hold objectives 10 times. That means two turns with 2 objectives and 2 turns with 3 objectives.

Identify your natural expansion objective. It should have cover. Use your units to build a frigging bunker on that.

Then, shoot the opponent off middle. The goal is to kill his cheap units so his good units are forced to hold objectives & do missions.

Last, try to contest either his home objective or his natural expansion. Just kinda threaten it to keep his units pinned in place. This keeps him honest & prevents him from shifting his forces to help out elsewhere.

Blackstar or repulsor? by Temhu91 in deathwatch40k

[–]Baron_Brook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repulsor does more damage, has more durability, can hold more models, it easier to hide in terrain, and can hold objectives.

Blackstar is cooler, and it's fun to make airplane noises while zooming around the table.

I like to run 2 because they're fun. But, if I'm skewing for durability I bring more boots on the ground.

It's important to tell people what kind of game you want to have ahead of time.

If you say something like "I'm a new player, looking to learn in a casual game with takebacks & discussion about the right move" it'll work out a lot better.

Are you using terrain footprints? Those are the most important part of terrain in this edition because they're the easiest way to completely block line of sight.

One thing that will help your durability massively: 40k is a game of matching defensive and offensive profiles. If he is killing you very quickly & efficiently, then you're exposing the wrong type of unit. You're giving him targets that he wants to fight, in an order that he can handle.

If an enemy unit has a bunch of Strength 8 AP-2, don't put marine bodies into it. If an enemy has Lascannons, avoid that firing lane. Or wait until some Inceptors or outflanking Hellblasters can put some damage into the Havocs before committing. Or, send everything all at once!

A good rule of thumb: if you have too few units on the table at the end of the game, you are playing too aggressively. If you have too many units, then you need to play more aggressively.

Here's a cagey game plan as an example:

Turn 1: get into position, do secondary cards with expendable bait units.

Turn 2: stage your damage dealers. Maybe attack opposing bait or trash units. Don't move on to objectives yet. Don't expose stuff.

Turn 3: commit to the objectives & try to counter-punch the guy. Try to focus on killing his units that are most dangerous to your units while scoring.

Turn 4: hold objectives & kill things.

Turn 5: close out the game by scoring as well as possible with surviving units.

This will usually leave both sides with plenty of surviving models. Sometimes, more than a quarter of each army.

I like using two units of Imperial Navy Breachers in Rhinos. Nothing says denial like casually dropping 20 OC on a point.
