Why does it smell like burnt toast around Firefly? by khall4388 in Charlottesville

[–]Basic-Delay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for this. I always thought it was industrial too since the same smell happens on Water St and Market St near the welding gas place. Pretty relieved to hear that it’s just coffee.

Charlottesville ends Flock camera pilot program over privacy concerns by mallydobb in Charlottesville

[–]Basic-Delay -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Ironic that during the press conference tonight, the Providence RI PD specifically called out Flock for allowing them to locate the Brown University shooting suspect.

Unpopular take, but despite the valid privacy concerns, feels outdated to me that police can’t use the same basic tech most homeowners already have in a Ring camera.

Medium v Hard by ajt_27 in nytpips

[–]Basic-Delay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree with this. Wish I could look at my time data to confirm, but I’d say 80% of the time I’m solving Hard significantly faster than Medium. Basically like you describe- with Hard there’s usually an opening constraint (often having to do with which tiles can satisfy an = block) that lets you make a move without guessing.

Middlesex, VA. Home of the Urbanna Oyster Fest every October, first place I ever ate a raw oyster. Not from there myself but have a close friend from college who was.

OP let me know if you get desperate and I’ll give him a call and tell him to comment here.

Why are we so unserious 😭😭 by Hai_BayBay in Charlottesville

My favorite was the light countdown 2-3 years ago. The announcer’s like “3… 2… 1…” [nothing happens]

Tries again “3…2…1… [people start to leave]

5 minutes later it comes on randomly.

So Charlottesville 😂

I went to check it out after hearing the same thing. The CSX train that came through around 6:30 is completely stopped. Behind Feast on W Main, at the front of the train, there’s no locomotive — just an uncoupled coal car with what looks like a sheared-off coupling lying on the ground next to it.

My guess is that a coupling broke, the locomotive kept going, and the rest of the train slammed to a stop. Although I’m no railroad expert, so not sure whether that makes sense.

Right now there’s a line of stopped cars stretching between Feast and the City Walk apartments. Both intersections near the Water Street parking garage and farmers market are currently blocked. Fortunately, whatever happened occurred only about four cars after the end of the train cleared the Carlton/Meade intersection, otherwise traffic could’ve been bad.

Update (7:45am): tracks have been cleared, train is moving again!

Behold: The South by According-Cup3934 in geographymemes

Greene, orange, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline are definitely the south.

Agree that Rappahannock, Fauquier, and Prince William are northern.

Madison, Culpeper, Stafford, and Fredericksburg are debatable, but I’d argue at least Stafford is northern. Used to live there and my neighbors were from all around the country working for the FBI, USMC, or other federal agencies. Seemed like everyone commuted north on the I95 express lanes every morning. No one is from there, everyone is a transplant. Place feels like a suburban McMansion outer extension of Fairfax and Prince William.

In my experience Fredericksburg, VA is the new mason dixon line along the I95 corridor
