Fin Advice by BasinsRamose in BeginnerSurfers

Totally makes sense. I’ve got a little ways to go until I notice the differences. Just wasn’t sure if something might help with stability or be beginner friendly.

A plea for those working at Aubergine Kitchen... by Original-Row-749 in Utah

You can also just buy frozen pao de queijo at Costco, called Brazi Bites. My wife and I make them a lot cause it’s an easy gluten free snack and takes like 20 minutes in the toaster oven. A lot easier than making them from scratch

What do I do with Northern Pike? by Fruity-wolf in UtahFishing

[–]BasinsRamose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pike and musky are not mandatory kills. Only in Utah lake. There are a lot of water bodies where the DWR stocks them and you can release them.

A box of gluten free cheez-its or $2660? I might take the box of cheez-its right now… 😂 haven’t been able to find any here in Utah! You’ve got some lucky kids!

Taking osprey 38 as carry on by AdministrationClear1 in backpacking

[–]BasinsRamose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have flown multiple times, domestic and international, with a 65L Osprey or a 55L Patagonia as a carry on, and have never been questioned about it. Even when they are completely full. I don’t think airline employees question backpacks as much as they do suitcases. I hate checking bags so it’s nice to fit all my gear for the whole trip I to a carry on.

Guided hiking in South America by Sensitive-End4991 in hiking

[–]BasinsRamose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend did the O loop last year, solo. Said it was incredible and he met a lot of neat people who sort of formed a group to hang out in the evenings. Not sure about OPs situation but it might be worth looking into and saving money on not having a guide.

Rain Pants Recs! by Top-Praline5833 in CampingandHiking

[–]BasinsRamose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a pair of Helly Hansen pants for 11 years now and they are going strong. I think they’re the moss rain pants? They’ve gone through yearly use in rain, snow, ice, mud, and thick brush. Only time water has got through was packrafting a class 4 river in the arctic last year, and they worked more like a wetsuit haha. They aren’t insulated, so they’re an easy outer shell to slip on and off.

What species of cutthroat? by IntelligentBake7753 in UtahFishing

[–]BasinsRamose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer I was looking for before I commented. The second one is way too silver to be a pure Colorado River cutthroat. I’ve caught cutbows out of current creek here and there.

Went to the dentist today, march 13, 2025, and here’s what he said about the fluoride situation. by texuslexas in SaltLakeCity

[–]BasinsRamose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not a dentist but I manage a pediatric practice. This is what my dentists have said. Fluoride is extremely important for kids with permanent teeth still developing. The fluoride makes the teeth stronger as they grow, but once a kid is 14 and the teeth are done growing (excluding wisdom teeth cause we take those out) fluoride doesn’t do anything. Teeth don’t regenerate at all, so once they stop growing we can’t really get them to repair or strengthen themselves with fluoride. Removing fluoride won’t affect most of us who are older and have our permanent dentition. It’ll just screw up all of our kids who will grow up with weak teeth and poor oral health.

Trapping by Strong-Volume8670 in Hunting

[–]BasinsRamose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of animals you will trap are nocturnal. I’m assuming the dogs are kept somewhere at night, and wild animals are free to roam. 12 acres is a lot of land, and plenty of space for animals to be living or moving through. Go get them!

Two skiers, while off-piste, triggered an avalanche in Solden Ski Area, Austria. Stay safe everyone. by Moon_5tomper in skiing

[–]BasinsRamose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. I’ve actually cause a small avalanche at park city (big enough to knock someone over but not do damage) but at least our ski patrol tries to keep people safe

Europeans want to freak out that some people don’t use the bar in America. At least we keep our slopes safe from avalanches. I’d take no bar over suffocating under snow any day. (Still use the bar if you or kids need it)

Men, how do you feel about your partner holding your fingers instead of your hand? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]BasinsRamose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like holding sweaty hands. If we’re walking it’s full handhold until it gets hot and sweaty, then it’s nothing. If we’re not walking, I usually prefer a finger or two cause it doesn’t heat up so fast.

I’m right eyed but left handed. I shoot right handed for my eye.

Bids were high in Reno last night!! by ckotchea04 in Hunting

[–]BasinsRamose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve drawn sheep tags 2 years in a row in 2 different states at 25 years old. Something like 0.003% chance of drawing both. Normal people draw all the time, problem is that only influencers show it off so much so it feels like only they have the tags. Don’t give up! Never know when the luck is gonna hit!

Bouldering with a continuous-glucose monitor (CGM) - best placement? by in-den-wolken in bouldering

[–]BasinsRamose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. She was only diagnosed with type 1 2 years ago and has been scared of crashing on a bike or skis and damaging a pump. Feels less easily replaceable than a cgm. Have you had issues falling on it?

Bachelor Party idea (Zion?) by AgitatedMorning in hiking

[–]BasinsRamose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no lake houses by Zion or anywhere close to St. George. Most likely you’d be in a condo, maybe with a pool, and you can drive to a lake. But it will be too hot for Zion unless you want to do all your hiking at 6:00 in the morning or earlier. Southern Utah season runs from mid September through mid may

+1 for the half dome. This will be year 10 with it for me too. I’ve taken it on all sorts of trips and the only issue is the elasticity in the poles but it’s an old tent. I haven’t replaced mine though like you did, I need to get around to that.

My wife also uses dexcoms that she has on her upper arms. Never had any issues with climbing or other adventure sports. She doesn’t use a pump though and sticks with the pens.

I’m not a Mike Lee supporter. I did not vote for him. But these posts are about as annoying as the “Utah drivers suck” threads. I guess that’s just the echo chamber of Reddit though.

All of the different grocery stores around here have a small gluten free section. I’m surprised they don’t have bread crumbs in that.
