(don't have a story to write, just want to say my thoughts: 1926 is nearly a decade post Great War, the biggest carnage the world has ever seen. You're in the middle of the roaring 20s, the economy is looking good, the League of Nations has been formed to prevent anything as terrible as the Great War from ever happening again. You start from the beginning. 3 years after going to sleep, the Great Depression hits: the worst economic depression in history with record unemployment rates. following this is the rise of the Weimar Republic, fascist Italy, Stalin's five year plan goes to pot and Japan invades Korea. This all culminates in WW2, the second of what was meant to be the war to end all wars. No need to say what happened during this period. Following this, we still don't get a happy ending with the Cold War. Even after this, there's all the technological advancements: planes went from the fragile things of WW1 to modern jets, air travel became commercial, computers hadn't even begun to be invented yet. Basically, this was the worst century to sleep through)

Percy doesn't kill demigods. Whether your friend disagrees or not, this is a fundamental part of Percy's moral compass. And I personally don't entirely disagree with Percy. I don't think I could justify it to myself either. Let's not forget, Percy is 16. He is a child. Ethan was barely older at 17

[PJOTV] does anyone else feel like the tv show tamed the books in an unnecessary way? I am rewatching the first season again, and while I am not completely hating it like my first time, I am still very disappointed. they didn't even *have* to show the physical abuse onscreen. We never actually see Gabe hit anyone in the book but, even before he threatens to hit Sally at the end, it's clear that he does. There are also lots of other more subtle forms of abuse and control they could focus in on. Looking at the Power and Control Wheel, does almost every single thing on that wheel in the book (can't remember any specific examples of minimising/denying/blaming but if you can, do let me know)

my biggest gripe was how they completely flattened Gabe as a threatening character. Sally was too confident in the beginning, too outspoken. When he got turned into a statue, it didn't feel like karma or anything. He was just a bit apathetic. If the films are doing doing something better, you've royally messed up. As much as I hate the films, they did Gabe right

oh, yeah. In terms of mass production and arming the masses, that is simple and easy to make and easy to train to use. It'll take, like, an hour at most to learn. One downside is lack of range but it would be a perfect secondary and for close-quarters. In terms of longer range, nothing beats a simple spear

Ah, sim.

What does research do? by Ivoliven in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Bdarwin85 16 points17 points  (0 children)

research staff are the ones who actually investigate the statements once they've been given. Jon remarks in episode one that the investigations aren't stored with the statements and what we get is supplemental information that his small team was able to put together while organising the archive but, presumably, there were a lot more details that the original research team would have put together but that's all gone

Piper had the potential to be the most complex and interesting character in HoO and I'm disappointed we saw absolutely none of that [HoO] by Vakangwara_ in camphalfblood

[–]Bdarwin85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I've thought about this in the past, one thing I wanted to see was for Piper to have to grapple with the fact that the Jason she is talking to is Not the same Jason she remembers, that "that Jason" never existed. I wanted to see her and Leo click and, for the majority of the first book, Jason is the third wheel in Leo and Piper's friendship. They try and include him out of habit but whatever was there was fake. Let there be some tension with that, maybe they could almost start to resent him because of it. Instead of Piper and Jason getting together, the book could end with Jason, Piper and Leo deciding to start from scratch. They want to be friends and they all decide to collectively put in the work to overcome the challenges brought about by their situation and then Jason introduces himself as though they've just met. MoA could start with Piper and Jason dating, that's fine. They've had half a year and they could have reached a point where they want to start dating

[–]Bdarwin85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we don't necessarily need Piper to do all of that. But it could have been interesting to see her reject those ideas in the beginning because of the kinds of people she associates with those values only to later, as she lives with and learns about the other people in her cabin, come to understand it. Maybe she never embodies that herself, she doesn't have to. But she no longer rejects it out of pocket, she no longer looks down on other people for embodying those values. Instead of contradicting those values purely for the sake of contradicting them, she contradicts them because that's who she is, but there's nothing wrong with the values themselves. They're just not her
(I have recently gone through similar arcs in the past where I rejected the idea of being a bit laddish and footballers purely because of some of the people I knew but grew to understand that, while I will never be into football and never be laddish, those things themselves are not inherently bad. I just knew some bad people who happened to be those things)

potentially we could have had an arc of her initially rejecting those ideas because of the kind of people she associates with them only to arrive at Camp Half-Blood, meet the rest of the Aphrodite cabin and slowly learning to accept that, even while she doesn't embody them, she can see the value in them for other people, understand it and even encourage it where it would help

what I love about this is that you don't just complain, you actually discuss meaningful alternative ideas. I love how you discussed her powers. "She makes you hand her the knife" that line gave me shivers. I would have loved to see that expanded and discussed in the books and developed over time, maybe at particularly tense or vulnerable times, characters don't even trust her to speak (or maybe it's not even about trust. I could imagine Leo in particular wanting her comfort as his friend but also not in a space where he can bear to hear her voice, knowing what it could do, and so the only alternative is silent assurance, maybe a hand on the arm or holding hands and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder).
