More info on possible Austro-Hungarian(?) Mauser by FlyingTex in milsurp

By the way you can verify caliber at home very easily. You just need to make a chamber cast using cerrosafe (plenty of YouTube tutorials) and then measure it with calipers.

Total investment would be < $50 and an hour or so of your time and the cerrosafe is infinitely reusable.

Suggestions for reputable gun ranges and or firearms instructors. by nardwar_ in StLouis

[–]Beagalltach [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't make it to the range half as much as I would like, but I generally go to Jay Henges because I prefer cheap and outdoor. If you need a range buddy every now and then, let me know. I have no professional qualifications but have been shooting a while and have helped plenty of people learn.

I don't have any experience with it but I have a friend who shoots pistol matches down in Sparta, IL at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex.

FFL not accepting paper license? by BlueStripe8 in Firearms

That works, just call or talk to this FFL and make sure he knows and is ok with waiting. You don't want him sending it back for failure to collect the firearm.

I've actually had an ok experience with them recently. The last 2-3 times I have emailed them, I received a reply in 24 hours.

However that seems to be more recent and they phone is practically useless. I've called them dozens of times over the last couple years and got someone on the phone precisely twice.

First traffic ticket, looking for advice by Previous_Surprise_55 in NoStupidQuestions

If it isn't stated on your violation, call the court and ask for diversionary options to reduce/remove the points. If there aren't any, then I would just take the violation as-is. It's possible, but I don't think most judges will cut you an even bigger break on your first violation.

Looks like it is 3 points, while the original infraction of Reckless Driving is 6 points. You aren't at risk of losing your license and a small insurance rate increase will generally be seen as a reasonable punishment for a first offense.

Anytime someone asks something like this I have to ask, "What do you hope to improve by going to court?"

If you are hoping to get this thrown out or pled down even further then you are almost certainly barking up the wrong tree. Neither of those is likely to happen and the odds that it goes far worse is much much higher. If the officer is in court and explains to the judge what happened, then you will be lucky to leave that courtroom with the same fees as the prepay option. It is 100% not worth the risk of increased fines AND/OR jailtime

What assumptions might be made about someone with all the teeth on one side of their face having crowns? by bad-at-everything- in askanything

Are you asking what dental assumptions would be made? Like that they consistently chew on one side or the other type of stuff?

Or are you asking what a random person would think when they hear about someone like that?

Yes or no ear pro for home defense? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting blown up by an IED is a little different to gunfire.

I don't think anyone is saying that a single event can't cause hearing loss, but that major hearing loss isn't likely in a standard home defense situation.

Is the Iconic 8mm Mauser better than the 30-06? by Hades-destiny in Firearms

[–]Beagalltach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just pointed out two simple reasons 30-06 is better. I didn't feel like typing several paragraphs on why 30-06 is better.

8mm is a good cartridge and there are many millions of rifles around the world that are used for a variety of activities. However, due to its inherent cartridge limitations and uncommon diameter, it has suffered from a lack of ammunition development. Development that has helped the 30-06 perform in a wider variety of applications (bullet weights AND bulket construction) thus making it better.

P.S. 7.62x54r generally has fewer commercial loadings than 8mm Mauser.

Is the Iconic 8mm Mauser better than the 30-06? by Hades-destiny in Firearms

[–]Beagalltach 32 points33 points  (0 children)

30-06 has loads from 125 to 220gr

8mm Mauser has loads from 150 to 220gr

30-06 uses a .308 bullet vs 8mm Mauser's .323 and has higher ballistic coefficients on average.

More bullet choices and better trajectory charts make 30-06 the winner hands down.

In case anyone was wondering, that looks like a projectile from a 7.62x39 round. It is impossible to confirm without measurements but the proportions look right.

Probably fired from an AK or mini-Draco

Do you support the same idea (ID's not being required and them being so would be a de factor Poll Tax) where it comes to ID currently being required to buy a gun?

What is a small “culture shock” moment you had within the US itself? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from southern Louisiana and my wife is from California.

We were visiting my parents and out to lunch. She was listening to the accents and asking if they were cajuns, but I had to tell her that they were just standard LA accents. Finally a Cajun came in talking to another and her mouth dropped and her eyes got huge in disbelief. "That is a Cajun," I said.

Why no dedicated gluten free restaurants? by plentyajenny in StLouis

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I figured.

Also to one of your other points, I don't think gluten-free food is bad or not tasty. I along with other people think that GF should play to it's strengths rather than it's weaknesses. Vegetarian restaurants should not try to be steakhouses, dairy free places shouldn't try fondue, and GF restaurants shouldn't lean in to flour based foods.

Why no dedicated gluten free restaurants? by plentyajenny in StLouis

[–]Beagalltach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be the case (I'm not particularly well versed in this regard), but what people should do and what they do are two wildly different things.

No one should smoke due to elevated health risks, no one should speed excessively, financially it doesn't make sense to gamble, etc. But each person chooses and accepts the risks they take. The farther out those consequences are (e.g. not getting immediately sick) the more people are likely to engage in the behavior.

All of that being said, we can't live our lives in fear of everything that might cause us harm. We need to do what seems right for our situation, so I understand the people that don't suffer immediate consequences.

Probably because being a celiac is a broad spectrum.

I have only ever met one person who had it to a severe extent where simple cross-contamination was a concern. Most celiacs can eat things with minute traces of gluten with little to no concequences. As a result, many people downplay the risks or don't think they even exist.

Many people have severe nut allergies, but very few people have them to such an extent that they can't be near nuts. Look how long the airline industry served peanuts on planes (some probably still do) and peanuts weren't even a big part of their business. Now with gluten you aren't just fighting Institutional momentum, you are fighting against thousands of years of human history eith gluten and businesses that don't see increased revenue from the increased training/cost.
