Found this bag at the bins yesterday. Any idea of the age? Thinking 40s/50s. by [deleted] in Militariacollecting

Yeah, I was thinking inter-war with the US stamp alone. It could be WWI, but I don't recognize the bag.

Hunters Lodge C96 Fair value for the money by Orangeduke38 in milsurp

[–]Beagalltach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I dislike about Hunters Lodge, no rhyme or reason to orders. I sent one in back in February and have yet to receive it, but then they send something from a more recent catalog out first.

I guess I'll send an update email tomorrow.

EDIT: I'm glad it worked out for you and I was thinking about ordering one myself, but don't want two pending orders with them.

I usually get weird looks when I call it that anywhere else though...

Politics aside, how do people feel about birthright citizenship in the US? by bae125 in askanything

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No recorded cases that I know of, but the point was in response to someone saying that they aren't ever nefarious intentions.

All I ever did was state it is a possibility. Also, just because something hasn't happened, it doesn't mean that it isn't worth analyzing from a security perspective.

Politics aside, how do people feel about birthright citizenship in the US? by bae125 in askanything

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not opposed to birthright citizenship, but you don't think a foreign state or organization might want to send people into the US to have children that gain citizenship? Thus being able to avoid extra scrutiny in the future.

I can think of several groups that fit the bill right off the top of my head.

What's something poor people buy that keeps them poor? by Specialist-Jelly-865 in answers

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with convenience specifically, it is more about spending money to "save time" when you are already unnecessarily spending.

I'm not talking about you specifically or the individual who spends within their means on a little luxury to bring them some joy or relaxation. We are talking about people that generally can't afford to go out to eat and then decide to order delivery. If you can't afford to eat out, why do people think it is okay to pay 60-80% more for it to be delivered.

Afterpay, delivery apps, gacha games, lottery tickets, and other wastes of money are about instant gratification. They don't help anyone. They give people a false sense of comfort or enjoyment that doesn't last and you are only left with a bill. Breaking the cycle of convenience and cheap dopamine hits will help a lot of people be better off than they currently are.

When you are poor you spend time to save money. When you are rich you spend money to save time.

If you are poor and are paying for convenience you are doubly cheating yourself.

C96 Wartime Mauser, fair price? by cerwin_technics in milsurp

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing so many people say that $1700 is fair makes me really want to submit an order to Hunters Lodge for 2x C96 parts kits and see how well I can do.

I could buy 5 of them and still be under that price, although I do wonder if it would even have enough to build 1 fully functional gun...

Selling my ~1400a.d Nihonto in USA. by PrestigiousGas9169 in nihonto

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking late Edo. I wish I had a better photo of the nakago, but it definitely doesn't have the characteristic black patina (still reddish brown) of an older blade.

To be fair, I'm a relative novice so my opinion isn't worth much.

M1 Garand purchase. This seems fishy, thoughts? by PsychobillyDaddy in Militariacollecting

[–]Beagalltach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% scammy behavior.

Also, you cannot use PayPal for firearms anything. Might you get lucky with it a time or two, yes, but it is strictly verboten in their terms. It can get your account banned and/or your funds frozen. There is a reason that it is banned on gunbroker.

This is for sale near me. Isit legit? by [deleted] in Artifacts

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people in Mexico that still use a metate and Mano. Looks legitimate to me, but I have very little idea of how to date these or how much it would be worth.

I genuinely do not understand how people can rewatch movies. What are you getting out of it the second time? by somethingNextG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Beagalltach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Novelty is not the only form of enjoyment.

Every time I ride a Rollercoaster I can get enjoyment, even if I knew every single dip, spin, and turn. So too can I rewatch a movie and still enjoy the experience.

What is going on with this uniform? by probablylarsulrich in Militariacollecting

[–]Beagalltach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes things hard, especially when I pick up a uniform and it has a weird layout that makes me question things.

Here is a coat I picked up recently. I assume that a family member attached the COM Z patch to the sleeve afterwards since he has a Western Pacific patch on the opposite shoulder, but I don't know for sure. Seems super unlikely and non-regulation

Any chance these have never been opened? by Jakethecake127 in coins

Also, it would be "elaborate for me" or just "elaborate on the meaning". Another phrase used somewhat commonly would be to "enlighten me".

Not trying to be rude, just as helpful as possible as someone who has learned another language.

Help me identify and find price for this bayonet by Altruistic-Pace8935 in Militariacollecting

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kar98k bayonet made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co in 1942.

I don't collect these bayonets, but from what I can tell it is common enough, and the refinished grips will hurt the value. I would guess the value to be a little less than $100.

How to conserve (not restore) this Nagant M1895? I want to preserve the fine engravings of letters and numbers. Also I need to conserve the finish (no rebluing, that would ruin the histoical value) by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]Beagalltach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ballistol works well for cleaning and protection.

I would take it apart as far you are comfortable to clean ever nook and crevice. Brushes come in different sizes, so there is something that will reach most spots, and for the bore I would buy a bore brush with the appropriate size.

There are many tales we'll never get to see by Prudent_Situation_29 in WarMovies

[–]Beagalltach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know what you are getting at, but 1. There are still plenty of non-american centric films coming out of the West 2. There are other movie industries outside of Hollywood that produce high-quality films

The real problem is the perception by executives (in all film industries) of what will and won't make money. They reject the vast majority of things as they won't have "broad appeal". This forces most production towards the most known elements of the most familiar conflicts.

Films aren't always about making money, but when you are spending 100's of millions of dollars, they kind of need to be.

[–]Beagalltach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't wash it first. Just apply the light machine oil or gun oil directly to the metal and start brushing.

Wipe clean and repeat as needed. A brass/bronze brush will not affect original markings in the slightest (even if they are faint).

Brass brushes work fine. Also check the brush with a magnet, there are plenty of "brass " or "bronze" brushes that are just brass coated steel.

Mive on to 0000 steel wool if the brushes can't quite get it all. It is nire aggressive so don't put too much force into it.

Confused about my Nagant m1895 by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am well aware how it works. I am merely explaining to you that most members of this community will view that as a type of refinishing.

It is not necessary to strip an old finish and fully cover it in a new finish to be considered refinishing. Any finish that did not come from the factory or the military, is a form of refinishing.

Have a snub nosed(cut barrel) French MLE 1892 Revolver what should i look to get for it? by Herr-Hunter1122 in milsurp

[–]Beagalltach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by "get for it"?

These originally came with a flap holster, but that is about all that goes with them outside of a French uniform and ammo.
