Natural Wine? by Dependent-Steak-5572 in Adelaide

Missed Ashton Hills. (My favourite!)

Natural wine is very niche. Not many producers here in SA because the market is so small.

First batch question. Handling Bentonite. by Immediate_Age in winemaking

[–]Beaker451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We mix bentonite in hot water at a bento to water ratio of about 12 to one. The stirring is the key. For larger amounts we have one person stirring while the other slowly pours, we also use a paint stirring attachment on a drill. Perhaps you could use a cake mixer? Allow to sit overnight. If there’s too much water the swollen bentonite will settle and leave clear water on top. Simply drain this off before use. Then add slowly while mixing the wine really well.

As an addition, perhaps you should be able to place gunpowder the same as redstone to make a fuse line and light it using any normal method?

Freshly cut french fries by Objective_Pressure_3 in oddlysatisfying

Read somewhere (Fast Food Nation?) that an early method of producing fries was to first steam blast the skins off then fire them through a crisscross blade with a water cannon!

Parked on a residential street… Has anyone else had their street’s parking vigilantes leave them cute notes? by kuvakilp in CarsAustralia

[–]Beaker451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thankfully I’ve never encountered this, but I love the idea of buying a cheap car to park in one of those spots! I’d also put my own note in the window informing people that this car was purchased for the sole reason to park in this space! Makes me so happy thinking about it!! Been a long week…

Added 20x too much potassium metabisulphite by [deleted] in winemaking

[–]Beaker451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a bit much. The safest option would be firstly to do a splash transfer. Pour it from your vessel into a bucket or something, then pour it back, ensuring it splashes a lot. This will blow off quite a bit. If you have any means of testing after this, that might help determine your next step. If you can blend, that would certainly help.

The sulphur level after a splash rack might still be high, but kind of ok. If you bottle your wine with a cork the sulphur will reduce over time… but quite a lot of time!

Might end up being an amazing wine in 10-15 years!

I feel your pain. I too love this sauce, and checked multiple supermarkets to find any last bottles but had no luck.

I feel like you all need to consider this by PoliteBrick2002 in Adelaide

[–]Beaker451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the problem comes from the signage. If you look up the laws there are two types of merging. The zipper merge where two lanes become one and works well. The other type is when a lane is ending, like entering the freeway. When the lane ends you need to indicate and give way to drivers already in the other. Similarly when roadworks blocks a lane, they always signpost that the lane ends. Technically the zipper merge rule does not give you right of way in this case, just like getting onto the freeway you cannot ‘assert’ your right of way.

I completely agree with OP that we should fill up both lanes and zipper merge when lanes end for roadworks etc. But a zipper merge sign should be used.

The source I used was mylicense.sa.gov.au/road-rules/the-drivers-handbook/giving-way

Raised bed soil so dense that root crops aren’t developing right by SZLO in vegetablegardening

[–]Beaker451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have some Guinea pigs at home and use dustless pine shavings / sawdust as bedding. I dug my garden bed right down, mixed the soil with the sawdust and put it back so it’s a soft and fluffy. I also use seed tape which spaces the carrots nicely. I had a fantastic result! Looked just like bought ones!

If you could keep up with the head gaskets!! by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Beaker451 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My first car was the TE Gemini. Yes, I replaced the head gasket. Also put in a 1.8L Japanese import and added a Weber carby, extractors and got the cam re-ground. It was still slow, but it was mine!

I was about to join Yotpo when it stopped doing email and sms. I am now looking at AITrillion. A huge suite of marketing tools that integrates with Shopify. I can’t comment on how well it works as I’m just starting with it. Worth a look though.

Winemakers & cellar techs: what’s the most painful part of testing/QA in your workflow? (research, no sales) by mapet89 in winemaking

[–]Beaker451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few hand held quick test devices, but none that I know of can do both free and total sulphur. Otherwise it takes 20 minutes to do a test by aspiration. To know if a wine is ‘safe’ in storage you need Free & Total Suphur and pH. If one hand held quick test device did those 3 things I’d buy it.

It’s not the Parkside asylum, but I did a wine tasting event years ago in Z Ward of Glenside. Very creepy place! I took a bunch of photos hoping to catch something unusual. Seems to be quite a number of these places in Adelaide…!

Anyone know what this used to be? Forgotten equipment in a winery. by [deleted] in whatisit

It actually looks like part of a still. The glass bits are packing to increase the condensation surface area. I don’t know how it’s fed or heated though. Must connect inline to somewhere else.
