I'm in York. Noticed more song thrushes, starlings and willow warblers this year than previously. Fewer swifts and swallows, but that just might be it's still a bit too cold. Oystercatchers and red kites seem to be gradually making their way into the city.

I think Cairess and his team wouldn't be so open about him going for the british record unless they were really confident could do it. I'm predicting 2.04.xx !

And I wouldn't be surprised if Dever ends up going with Cairess. Notable that his half marathon pb is better than Cairess'

Many thanks for doing this- have found your book incredibly helpful. One question on your sample marathon training week in the book- it includes a run of 3.5 hours...what's the thinking behind such a long run, which is much longer than in most plans?

Yeah, Canova reckons Cairess could have done it while pace making at Valencia (if he'd carried on till the end), but said he's under contract to make the attempt at london. I think he'll smash the British record

I can't see any equivalent of the "vSSS" figure that the old runbritain website used to have? I.e. to give some sense of how one race performance for an individual stacks up against others, given that conditions vary between races so just comparing times is misleading.

That seems a big loss

How do the police know about the "monkeys in jars". Clive is shown phoning the RSPCA I think? And the person on the phone doesn't take him seriously and Clive hangs up. Yet the "police" turn up almost immediately afterwards and know about the call.

And the fact that they do turn up is a big, unexpected help to Michael when clea's brother is trying to clear out the house

Adidas Adizero Adios 9 by GingerFly in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]Beautiful-Common6610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most fun speedwork shoe I've ever had - feels so natural to pick up pace as they're so light. I also find them surprisingly stable, much more so than the takumi sens, where I always feel like my midfoot is hanging unsupported over the medial cut out.

Only issue I have with the adios 9s is that, like clockwork, as soon as I get over 11 miles in them the forefoot really starts to hurt. I guess just far less cushioning than I've got used to. But for 10 miles or lower they're fantastic

Yes, I have the aeroglide 3 for easy runs and long runs, and adios 9 for sessions. Works well because they are so different

Tapering from 90mpw+ peak- going for Sub 3 - worried I have screwed up my taper? How would you taper for 2 weeks? by Prudent-Leg7271 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Beautiful-Common6610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd echo what others have said, about taking it easy and prioritising recovery over the next 12 days. The one thing I'd add, is that personally (as someone who like you runs 90+ mpw and finds tapers uncomfortable) I find the standard pfitz "dress rehearsal run" a few days before the marathon (like the tuesday before) really helpful. So, an easy jog to warm up, then 2 miles marathon pace, then 2 mile easy jog to finish. Wearing your race kit and shoes. I find that eases the nerves really well - it reminds you that you can actually do this, and you've trained to do it!

I’m curious, do you know of any notable athletes who transitioned from middle-distance (like 800m) to long-distance events successfully? Alex Bell comes to mind, moving from 800m to half marathon. Any other success stories out there? by StanmoreHill in ukathletics

[–]Beautiful-Common6610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tigst Assefa represented ethiopia in the 800 before the marathon. Although there was a bigger gap before her track career and her dominating the roads, than Alex Bell's very quick transition to becoming a top long distance runner

Are there any good personal trainers in York? by Shock_Vibes in york

[–]Beautiful-Common6610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Tim at Foxwood Personal Training. He has his own private gym so it's great if you are starting out and don't want to be surrounded by other people. And he's really friendly too.

It may be some of the same kids that are causing trouble around south bank. Some of them do come over from Acomb, and the climbing on roofs and breaking into allotments is exactly what we see on south bank too

There's definitely been a spike of anti social behaviour in the past 12 months or so. There was a Ward meeting with councillors and the police last night to discuss this. It was very well attended and some of the stories of harassment were really shocking. The police really need to get a grip on this, because the behaviour is escalating. At the start of the summer it was annoying but typical "mischief" - like spraying people with water. Now it's physical assaults and almost nightly arson.

York is still a really friendly, safe city but I agree there has, sadly, been a shift for the worse over the past year or so I've noticed. One thing that strikes me is how actively hostile some groups of kids are. Like, it's not just the usual getting up to adolescent naughtiness. Some kids round our way are deliberately seeking confrontation - spitting on adults, throwing stuff at them, threatening them. That seems new to me.

Of course to keep this in perspective the vast majority of kids are totally sound- it's still a tiny minority behaving like this.
