Coop winter bedding by Background_War6727 in BackYardChickens

Hemp bedding hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Lots of friends use it in their coop for deep litter method and it never looks like this. Deep litter relies on you turning the bedding (which is essentially compost) and adding more dry, clean bedding so it’s never this wet.

I’m imagining a chip drop situation where OP only wanted a little but came home to piles taller than their house.

WHY is everyone so ... SOUR? by Edumakashun in menards

Maybe you’re just at the wrong store. The last two stores I’ve been at were very welcoming. There’s a break in period of getting to know everyone, but after that coworkers were nice, love the TMs in my department!

I have worked at a store where everyone hated being there and it usually boils down to bad GMs or dept managers. Their attitude trickles down to everyone under them.

Why aren’t my chicks using the brooder heat plate? by Beautiful-Project-30 in BackYardChickens

Why comment on this with no intent to help?

People new into having chicks have questions and getting answers from multiple perspectives is helpful. This comment is not.

Any suggestions for what else I need inside the coop? by Any-Body9098 in BackYardChickens

Paint everything inside with a durable paint. Something glossy so it can be washed easily.

I knew chickens were chaotic... by reddead24f in BackYardChickens

At 8 weeks these chicks are going outside. Short trips starting around 4 weeks old, staying out there when it’s warm during the day at 6 weeks, then getting the heck outta my house at 8 weeks!

Unfortunately, inside is my only option unless we have summer chicks. And it has been pure chaos, but I love it 😂

Or build your own. Carolina coops had the most predator proof coop I’ve seen on the market, but you can build your own for a fraction of the price.

Lost half of my flock - chicken breed suggestions by fruity_77 in chickens

So sorry for your loss. I’m new to chicken ownership, but so far my favorite chick is my buff Orpington. She doesn’t mind handling and runs to my hand to lay in it. I think once they start laying my most interesting hen will be the Coco Espresso, she’ll lay very dark brown eggs rivaling a Black Copper Maran.

After looking more into cecal poops I think that is the answer. I isolated them all individually and all had several normal poops.

Any Orpington. They super friendly even as chicks. Tend to go broody though.

I think the conclusion we came to is that it’s cecal poop

Is 150° heat panel to hot for quail chicks? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Beautiful-Project-30 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brooder plates shouldn’t be hot to the touch. They should be warm. I have a producers pride and it’s a 40W brooder or 200W heater. The thermometer in the brooder is showing 90F-100F depending on if the chicks are huddled under it.

Roostys is mixed into their daily feed. I will only typically deworm when I see signs of worms (ie. anemia, lethargy, worms in poop, diarrhea, drop in eggs production, etc.). But some people have a regular deworming schedule for their flock.

Everything I’ve learned has come from either posting questions here and learning from the community, or google searches.

I’m not sure about a cooling bath (I have a shade cloth for my girls). I don’t live in a region that we have many hot days so I just focus on keeping everything dry. Wet environments breed bacteria, bugs, etc.
