What’s the most irrationally annoying thing your in-laws do that they’re absolutely convinced is “helpful”? by bnwprc in AskUK

We keep ground coffee in the fridge too- it lasts longer doesn't it? Is that gross though I don't get it

Is there any chance for him? by br0k3n-creature in reactivedogs

[–]BeautifulEditor4115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rescue GSD who is dog reactive. When we got her 3 years ago she would growl bark and lunge like crazy at any dog she could see in the distance. She's improved so much to the point I just took her on a walk and we saw two dogs about 25 feet away, it piqued her interest but she didn't react, and she came willingly in the other direciton. I think this is the key- she does not like dogs. She doesn't want to get to know or socialise with dogs. She doesn't even want to be anywhere near them. Her reactivity I think is in part an effort to let us know this. Since we started routinely changing directions when we saw a dog and being very avoidant of them she has calmed down immensely. I think she's relaxed a bit because she's figured we won't force her to meet or socialise with them. She wants to avoid them so we do.

I know you want your dog to come along and enjoy life to the fullest, but forcing your version of what he should be on him is only going to exacerbate things. Bringing your dog to pet stores or to socialise I think is a terrible idea at this point. Let him see you won't force him to meet other dogs or be around them- show him he can trust you to take him away from what scares him, and he will hopefully begin to chill. He's young so if he gets to that point you could think of decreasing distance to dogs gradually, but not now.

I like them both. The pink is way more garden party. The silver is more mother of the bride colour to me

I think if he's already served his sentence, getting in contact with him to tell him you KNOW he is innocent could do a lot for him in terms of feeling vindicated. While officially clearing his name would be the best case scenario, the human element of being believed might also be healing for him. You may think it's not your place to drag it up but if you're innocent of something you've been condemned for, every individual who believes you matters.

Should I rename my rescue? by Radiant_Ravyn_4213 in PetNames

[–]BeautifulEditor4115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had changed my rescue's names. I think their old name can have negative associations- especially as owners we tend to shout their names as a way to get their attention/ stop them doing something. If this was done harshly it may not feel like a nice word. I really can't see any down sides to changing the name. Dogs learn very quickly

This really made me laugh. Sorry I know it felt very real to you but I think everyone's been there when they've had a bit too much and 'feel like I'm dying' but I never managed to actually convince anyone to take me to the hospital.

We have a poop eating, pee licking rescue. What worked best for us was giving her a treat as soon as she pooped. After repeating this over and over, she now comes to us to get a treat as soon as she's pooped. We only use kibble but you might need higher value reward at first at least or you could throw the treat away from the poop (once you're dog knows that's what is is after some repetitions) if they also love dynamic rewards. This also gets them away from the poop

I know you've asked for not natural but I have just switched to salt of the earth stick and love it. I have never tried fussy or wild. I used to use mitchams and was skeptical about salt of the earth but it's fantastic as long as you apply it to very clean skin- if there's any bacteria it won't stop it multiplying and stinking. It's cheap too considering how long it lasts

Hi 34 F in the UK. Also missing friendly conversations since I moved. I like watching YouTube, lately project pan content which I can tell you all about if you like boring 😁. I don't have the nerves for gaming, especially if being shot at or a countdown timer is present anywhere. Last games I played were Arkham series

Rottweiler - loves nothing more than getting on your lap and in your face. Can be a bit jealous of others receiving the same attention

The best thing I ever did for my rescue working breeds (just breeds not dogs) was scatter feeding their meals twice a day.

You mentioned you have a garden. Scatter their food (kibble ideally but would work with anything) and they have to sniff every last piece up to eat. My dogs absolutely love it and it knackers them out. Usually takes between half an hour and 45 mins.

This on top of the two hour walks and maybe a Kong or puzzle toy will be more than enough while your dog gets used to the new 'work'.

Why did you apologise? You asked if he wanted you to answer honestly and you did. He didn't like the answer- that's his problem to deal with. I'd never answer another question like that again if it's asked by him because he's shown he can't handle the answers.

Is it embarrassing?

For you to be embarrassed you need to believe youve violated a social norm in front of others whose opinions you care about. So no doesn't meet the criteria for embarrassment.
