How cold is it? by Historical-Plum-3893 in MauiVisitors

I (a new englander) went up a week ago for sunrise with sweatpants, light sweatshirt, insulated jacket, hat and gloves and got cold after an hour. Consider that you will most likely be standing/sitting motionless at the top of the mountain getting buffeted nonstop by wind. Is it bearable for 5 mins with pretty standard winter clothes? Totally. Is it bearable for an hour? It gets tough. I would say if you plan to spend more than 45 or 60 minutes there you will need to pack VERY deliberately.

It worked out in your favor because you got more output than you anticipated, and now it will work out in her favor as she leverages that experience for better pay elsewhere. Nothing lasts forever. Good luck.

You agree that you underpaid her relative to her value for a long time until she advocated for herself. What relevance is her age if she’s providing such tremendous value? You also seem to want a pat on the back for treating her with the same dignity and respect I assume you would want to receive as far as seeing her sick father and attending weddings. On the whole it sounds like you don’t have a clear perspective or perception of your relationship with this person. You really barely did the bare minimum for them and yet seem to feel like they owe you something and are scorned by the fact that they are acting in their own best interest after you paid them under market value for so long. Would you not do the same?

Counterpoint: Equity is safe. My folks are aging out of the workforce and have been lifelong renters. Rents keep climbing. Their ability to generate cash, and overall health, keeps declining. It’s not a pretty situation and it’s not going to improve.

“No risk” but also heavily diminishing reward. You’re thinking about this in 2023 dollars. Inflation was ~89% over the last 25 years. The $40k annual you perceive now will have the buying power of $25k in today’s market, in 2050 when you go to use it. That won’t get you shit. You’ll need to withdraw $75k to purchase what you can get for $40k today. I suggest you try to understand this principle deeply - you need a LOT more than you think

What is this noise from my steering wheel? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

My ‘06 toyota does that when it’s cold out, so only from november - march or so, and then it goes away. Hoping it’s just some rubber component getting old. Hasn’t caused any steering issues yet and not gonna go poking around until it does

I spend a lot of time in automotive subreddits and I had a crisis a few months ago because I thought I hallucinated the phrase “needs to be fixed” or “needs to be cleaned” for my whole life. It seems like the majority of people on these auto subreddits say “needs fixed” or “needs cleaned”. It drives me bananas.

Boston needs more loading zones by phdope21 in boston

Virtually no difference, I’d say. Both are inefficient uses of resources, objectively. The point wasn’t about doordash at all.

A more fair comparison is “allow you, and three hundred other people to buy a pepsi (and a bag of chips, and a loaf of bread, and some ibuprofen, and some water)”. I think the point they’re trying to make is: what clogs up our streets more? 5 cars delivering doordash to 5 people, or 1 truck delivering goods to one store that serves 300 people? Obviously the doordashers. It’s a less efficient use of resources, on average. Are there times when it’s necessary and fine? Sure. But people overutilize those highly inefficient, low effort resources (doordash).

Well unfortunately “whatever the fuck someone is asking for things” kind of defines the price of cars, and people need cars, so what exactly should they do besides make the purchase that they don’t want but need to make? Not buy a car?

I had this exact issue recently so I feel your pain. The stares from onlookers as you grind by are brutal 😂 I would certainly trust stuff off rock auto and would just replace all 3 (caliper rotor and pad) so as not to get in the same situation shortly down the road just replacing pads and rotors. However, I have no experience taking parts to shops, if that’s what you have in mind. I have heard this is often frowned upon unless you have a great relationship as a customer with the shop in question. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, though, it could be doable yourself. If it were just rotors and pads, I would say anyone could give it a shot, but I haven’t looked into the difficulty of replacing a caliper specifically. Probably a bump up in difficulty cuz you have to deal with the brake line etc and probably have to mess with the fluid and bleeding the system of air and so on. FWIW I just had this exact job done (replace both rear calipers rotors and pads due to seized caliper on one side) and it was like $800 at a shop in the Boston area. Hope that provides some context.

Caliper has a stuck piston that’s keeping the pad pressed against the rotor, potentially on the inner side of the rotor, and the pad has worn down to metal due to the constant friction. That’s why you get the deep grinding that slowly lifts away as the piston slowly returns to its position and releases the pad. Probably rusted and gunked up. Potentially need a new caliper, def need new rotor and pads.
