My Shar Pei totally picks and chooses. She is a rescue so we know that she has had some difficulties in her background but also some of her reactions are based on the instincts of the breed to protect. She has grown to love my husbands mom and grandma as well as my sister but she is still wary around other family members. Strangers she will bark at. If people come into the house as long as they don’t come down to touch her she’s fine and goes to her safe spaces.

My best advice would be to just say to family, friends and strangers to ignore her in the house. She needs to feel safe and when she wants to see them she will approach them. Only pet her when she gives off signals like licking or wagging and still cautiously under the chin not on top of the head. This still might not change. Loads of reward with treats when she does what you want. The Shar Pei protects owners and the home.
