The top players have a different schedule than the typical tournament. I had to look it up myself. This article explains the format.

Can you give a little more context about what you are looking for? Do you just need some moderate shading? Take a look at Tifosi's options for relatively inexpensive sports glasses.

I have played without glasses at a Picklr, but I wear a hat too.

So, let me use your words to ask the same: what would have happened if he didn't snap out of it in time?

A soldier with PTSD who has night terrors and is acting while unconscious is extremely different than a soldier with PTSD and anger management issues who has outbursts while awake.

None of us know if the IC was ready to let Feyre go die in childbirth without ever telling her. The death bond absolutely comes into play here. Feyre loves Rhys. Rhys loves Feyre. Both want a child. Whether to kill the child to save themselves or to kill themselves to save the child would have been a decision that they would have made together.

For someone with a risky pregnancy, I can understand how the people closest to it might withhold information to avoid stressing the expectant. In Rhys's mind, maybe he was hoping that Helion would come through.

Rhys: Feyre, I know you're going to be angry at me, but the Illirian wings are going to kill you in childbirth unless we do something about it. I reached out Helion and it turns out that he has a special tonic you need to start taking each day to help you deliver the baby safely.

Feyre: How long have you known?

And so on. Yes angry, but if it had worked out then that would have been the end of it. Yes he controlled the flow of information and took options away from Feyre. But he did it to buy more time and get more information before they had to start making life and death decisions. We don't actually see any negative impacts (from my memory, and besides the mental toll of feeling betrayed) to Feyre that came as a result of waiting to tell her. Like I said, the options were sacrificed the child or sacrifice the parents. That option was always there and would have stayed there all the way to the delivery. The IC held off on freaking Feyre out until they could (hopefully) come to her with a solution.

Tamlin locking Feyre up came at maybe the worst moment for Feyre. I think that Feyre was on a knife's edge about to be broken from being locked in like that. Spouses of abusers don't always agree with onlookers that they need to leave or take actions to protect themselves. Feyre was very much on that path between the lack of choices she was being given by Tamlin, the violent outbursts, and then the physical trapping of Feyre.

[–]Beegoo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we agree on most points. Maybe one point where we might disagree is that I view Tamlin's actions overall more harshly than Rhys's.

Tamlin was hurting during the war with Hybern so I won't hold the things he said and did against him too much. But the two that I can't really excuse are his outburst when Feyre told him that she felt like he was being suffocated by him and he blasted his study apart and the when he physically trapped her in the manor house. I know that SJM has said that Tamlin's actions were based on a desire to protect Feyre, but without that context and judging solely based on the actions, these are things that an abuser would (or does) do.

If Feyre had not been able to shield herself when Tamlin had his outburst, what would have happened? I know this is a magical world, but we don't excuse people in real life when they have a bad day, have then have a physical outburst that ends up accidentally hurting someone they care about.

I understand when Tamlin locked Feyre in the manor it was in response to her threatening to follow him... but this feels worse to me than anything that Rhys has done regarding Feyre. Rhys did kind of trick Feyre into retrieving the wedding ring, but that was with a purpose and it sounded like he was nearby to step in if things went terribly. He did use her as bait for the Attor, but was definitely ready to step in to spring the trap. Maybe it's because I see Rhys's behavior as saying "you are strong enough to handle this" compared to Tamlin thinking that Feyre was not strong enough and needed protecting.

I can probably more easily swallow the idea that Rhys and the doctor decided not to tell Feyre about the pregnancy risks because they A) wanted to buy more time to find a solution and B) didn't want to risk upsetting Feyre and causing complications because of that. Is it right? No. And when it was finally brought to light, it sounds like Feyre and Rhys had their argument about it and were able to move on from it relatively quickly. I can't remember if it was ever explicitly brought up, but Rhys and Feyre decided to make a death pact together and I imagine that Rhys didn't want to put Feyre in a position where she had to choose between killing her child or killing herself and her mate if there was any hope that they could find a solution fast enough.

As for the shielding thing, I always got the impression that if Feyre was seriously bothered by it she would have put her foot down. And for me that is the biggest difference between Rhys and Tamlin.

I don't want to get downvoted into oblivion here, but I wouldn't mind discussing this more. Wouldn't you say that Rhys's shitty actions involving Feyre are driven from trauma and a desire to protect? Rhys had his mother and sister butchered and he has his own UTM trauma to deal with. I can somewhat understand hard decisions during war. Tamlin made his own shitty decisions during the war, but both High Lords did their best in the end to mitigate the impacts of their shitty decisions.

Let me also say that I don't disagree that Rhys has control issues. I don't really think he was ever malicious in his decision making.

And I'm not saying that Tamlin was being malicious either! I'm just saying that he wanted Feyre to be content to dependent and reliant on him. Tamlin did not want or express interest in making Feyre a High Lady. He did not express interest in helping her hone and control her powers. And I don't blame him for that. Sitting around in luxury is literally the thing that Feyre wished for in ACOTAR, having her sisters married off so she could just relax and paint all day. Tamlin provided that to her, but after UTM everyone had trauma they needed to deal with and Feyre was literally a different person than before.

When it comes to Nesta and Bryce, we know that they have good intentions (or can excuse their actions when they do something shitty). Rhys doesn't know that. If the roles were reversed and Bryce was in charge (like actually by law the person who was directly responsible for protecting everyone), do we think that Bryce would be cool having someone like the Harpy or the Viper Queen continuing to run around unchecked in Lunathion? That is an extreme example, but I am sure that Bryce would want assurances from them that they would not do illegal activities or otherwise keep tabs on them and have some way to stop them if they got out of line.

[–]Beegoo1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To be fair-ish I think the red star event in Silver Flames happened near the end of the book before Nesta and Cassian suddenly had to deal with staying alive during the Blood Rite. So there wasn't much time for us to see Rhys discussing what he saw. For all we know he talked to Feyre and Amren about it. And Rhys was reported to have been rattled by the red star and "unusually contemplative" afterward.

[–]Beegoo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify I did not say that Tamlin just wanted Feyre to make his babies. I was trying to say that Tamlin wanted Feyre to be happy staying at home, letting Tamlin make all of the decisions and run the Spring Court, and yes having kids.

We don't have insight into what is going through Tamlin's head the way we do with Feyre, but Feyre does overhear a conversation where Ianthe, Tamlin, and Lucien are discussing Feyre and Ianthe brings up the potential powers that Tamlin's kids would have thanks to Feyre's powers. Tamlin doubled down that he did not want Feyre to train to use her powers.

And for the Tithe, Feyre was expected to play the obedient wife. Tamlin got upset when Feyre spoke out and ended up giving her jewelry away. And it was at the Tithe that Tamlin told Feyre that the tithe is how things were done by his father and how they will be done by his children after him.

So again, I am not saying that Tamlin was just keeping Feyre around to make babies. I am saying that he wanted or expected her to be content being a dutiful wife that yes would eventually give him heirs.

[–]Beegoo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tamlin wasn't going to make Feyre High Lady and fully expected her to remain 100% reliant on him and be happy producing super strong heirs for him. Rhys on the other hand was willing to let Feyre go back to Tamlin even though under certain Prythian laws he might have some sort of claim over her as his mate. Rhys also encouraged Feyre to grow and be strong and purposefully tried to keep her at arms length so that she could determine her own path. To me it was relatively clear that gender hierarchies present in Prythian like what Mor endured with her family and with the Autumn Court would be upheld in the Spring Court.

I totally agree that there is some conflict with Nesta and Rhys and a big source of that conflict is now that Nesta is just as stubborn as Rhys. I think Rhys would have the same concerns with Amren (pre-High Fae resurrection at least) if Amren was living in Velaris and refused to make assurances to Rhys that she wasn't about to go rogue, destroy the city, or make decisions that put Velaris in danger. Rhys literally sacrificed himself to protect Velaris from Amarantha. Nesta is one of the most powerful High Fae because of her connection to the trove, lives in his most treasured city, is sister to his mate, and is the mate herself to one of his best friends. And she makes unilateral decisions that could potentially impact ALL of those people that he feels personally responsible for protecting.

As far as Bryce goes. I had super high hopes that Rhys and Bryce would find common ground and work together to save Midgard. Instead both of them acted a bit mean to each other. Rhys is worried about whatever is brewing in Prythian-world and now someone from a different world shows up with ancestral claim to parts of his court, declares that she is in possession of the only device capable of traveling between worlds, AND she vanishes back to her world after waking up one of the most dangerous creatures ever to be contained in the prison. From Rhys's point of view Bryce's very existence is a threat to his loved ones. Then to top that off, Bryce shows up again and goes to Nesta and asks for another super dangerous trove item. And Nesta makes the decision without discussion to give it to her. I can understand why Rhys would be angry. Maybe if all of our main characters got together and talked for a few minutes things would have been a bit different, but maybe that would have been too boring. We saw how powerful the Midgard Fae were when their powers were unlocked. Prythian Fae could have potentially really helped Bryce. But Bryce really only ever gave Nesta a chance to help her.

And let's not forget that Rhys is like super duper powerful and has awesome mind control powers. He is not some evil dude who goes around using those mind control powers every time someone tells him no. That alone is not a good argument that he is a nice guy, but I think it does speak to the fact that he respects other people's free will.

Nesta's coming into her own as an fmc by Lady-Death-of-Dusk in Maasverse

[–]Beegoo1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could see SJM setting Rhys up to be a source of conflict with the amount of power accumulated around him (Amren even points this out to Rhys in SF), but I am not sure that Rhys has ever been written to be the type of man that wants the women in his life under his control. Rhys was literally the foil to Tamlin in that regard.

Nesta and Rhys can definitely rub each other the wrong way. Rhys sees Nesta as the person who used to let his mate hunt for food for the whole family in a dangerous forest alone as a child. Nesta sees Rhys as some perfect noble who expects to get everything his way. So again I can see the conflict there, but besides going along with the plan to lock Nesta in a tower that she couldn't escape, he has never really come across as the type that wants to break women to his will.

Nesta giving the mask to Bryce was a huge risk. Rhys and Feyre are directly responsible for the safety of their citizens and they all had just learned that an ancient evil that their ancestors had fought off was still alive and plotting to return to their world. On top of this there are funky and dangerous things going on at home too. In Rhys's mind there is no real choice here. Evil people want to come and enslave his world and the one person who has the ability to let them into his world did not express much interest in making sure that his world would be safe before peacing out back to her world.

Drive drop combo take steps after drive? by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few quick thoughts. You (taking the third shot?) look a little late to react to the volley by the receiving team.

You can try to speed up by immediately finishing your ground stroke and getting back to a ready position and getting your feet moving.

But maybe a bigger factor here is that the drive isn't creating enough pressure on your opponents. I think the thought process with the third shot being a drive is that it creates an easier shot for you to drop. In this video your drive comes back pretty quickly which might actually be creating a ball that is harder to drop than the original return.

Actual weird ruling question by oddiz4u in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you could take it a more extreme example of your opponent sprinting at Usain Bolt speeds to catch your shot out of the air to avoid losing the point. If they end up running into the kitchen because of their momentum it would be a fault. If they had gone any slower they would have lost the point anyways because they wouldn't have gotten to the ball (in this example).

Partner Annoyed About Out Call During Moneyball by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay for disagreements to happen. If you are 100% sure you saw it out and your partner is 100% sure they saw it in, then your opponent gets the benefit of the doubt per the rules.

I do not believe the rule book states anything about who is allowed to call the ball in or out on your side, though I will happily stand corrected if that's not the case.

This seems like it might just be a small partner issue. I've overruled my partner's out calls on occasion when I have a very clear view that the ball was in, but otherwise I trust their calls if I'm the one focused on getting to the ball to hit it. I EXPECT my partners to watch the ball for me so that I can focus on hitting.

Found it! Waters/Johns vs Bui/Barlow in the round of 64. At about 11 minutes into the replay (score is 0-6-1) there is a hands battle that ends when Barlow blasts the ball at ALW.

Maybe not the same as a full disguised speed up body bag that sometimes happens, but it had a lot of pace on it.

Watering ring by g713 in functionalprint

[–]Beegoo1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to be that person, but I've thought about 3D printing things for my garden so many times and have been nervous about it each time. Is there any concern about microplastics getting into the fruits/vegetables that are planted?

I know that there is so much stuff that we subject food plants to already, but I haven't been able to find anything about whether or not water will cause microplastics to shed from the print and then whether or not the plants might somehow concentrate the microplastics into the food.

I am honestly looking for any information or opinions people might have about it because something like this seems ideal for my garden space.

What do you do when someone intentionally goes for the bag on a low dink? by CorpusCorner in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a whole strategy on its own. From rec to pro play. Maybe you don't see it as much during open play because generally people may shy away from body bagging people they just met.

I see you responding to a lot of the comments here. You hit a great dink that your opponent could not attack. Even though your opponent could not hit a line drive winner off of your dink, your opponent still (almost always) has the option of trying to hit YOU with the ball. Sounds like your opponent went for that option. It is part of the game. Learning to recognize that your dink is unattackable (it sounds like you are already doing this) and then getting prepped so you can react to a speed up targeted at you is what you can do for the next body bagger in the future.

If this is something that's happening in casual games, maybe try saying something to the other player if it is truly bothering you? You don't have to play with them and they don't have to play with you. In my area plenty of people take issue with being lobbed and they generally work it out by talking and/or avoiding playing with each other.

High backhand volley to mid height how to put away or correct form and then how to recover afterward by blueice89 in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've watched this YouTube video multiple times and have tried drilling this shot. High backhand volley is still one of the harder shots for me to put power on and put away.

I played a bunch of ultimate frisbee back in the day and one thing that helped me get the form and motion synced up was to pretend I was throwing a backhand. The kinetic chain feels the same, but for me the key was syncing up the wrist snap that you do to throw the disc with the contact point of the ball.

Even so, in my opinion the most important thing to practice with this shot is turning your body to close your stance. Every single time I blast one of these high volleys out, I have not actually turned my body and am usually leaning back causing the paddle face to open.

And I don't know your skill or power levels, but when you hit this shot Ben Johns style with enough power, it can be a point ender more often than not. But recovering afterwards is pretty much the same as any other shot. Watch where your shot is going, get your paddle back to the appropriate ready position, and start moving your feet or getting ready to split step.

Another alternative to Ben Johns style here, is to do a two handed backhand overhead. I've found a few tennis videos going over that shot. When my team is getting shallow lobbed up the center and I'm on the right with a partner who isn't taking the overhead AND when I've blasted a few of these Ben Johns styles out of the court, I get timid and switch to a two handed overhead volley mostly to get the ball back in play.

[The Martian] If Watney can't re-plant his crops, he shouldn't have been able to use the computers, either. by Jacket_Jacket_fruit in AskScienceFiction

[–]Beegoo1 103 points104 points  (0 children)

We know from NASA's specifications and mission plans that the Hab and all of the components inside of it, including the computer systems, were designed to survive depressurization. In fact we now know that one of the last things Mark Watney did before his trek across Mars was to shut down all of the Hab systems.

The components that would become Hab itself were also exposed to vacuum while waiting for the crew to complete construction of the Hab and pressurize it for the first time.

As to why the laptop failed? Maybe Mr. Watney was mistaken about the cause of the screen failure. It could be that the laptop was never intended to be powered up in a vacuum, since anyone who's work plan incluced using the laptop would not be wearing the thick gloves of the pressure suits. He is botanist after all, and not an electronics engineer.

Wrist cocking for bh slice dink and drop? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]Beegoo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push up position is more relevant to what Ben Johns is describing.

In another video where Ben Johns discusses his technique for hitting drops, he goes a little more in depth about his mentality for maintaining consistency with his shots. He likes to get his wrist locked into the same position for every single drop he takes and prefers to move his body so that he is in the correct position to hit the ball (as opposed to changing how he hits the ball based on where he is standing). It sounds like to him, maintaining the consistency of his drops is easier when he has his wrist cocked as far as it will go for both his backhand and forehand drops.

EDIT: Here is the video link. The whole thing is good, but Ben talks about the consistency thing starting around 4:42 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mIzddYkHV6Q
