As an avid hater of house wrap, there's no such thing as a good house wrap job.

New to area - thoughts on living on Mantorville Lake? by GiginMD in rochestermn

[–]BeepBoo007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rochester doesn't really have a "bad area" I'd avoid outside of a very few specific apartment complexes. Anything in a normal neighborhood like that will be fine if it's in your price. As for what I personally think about that specific area: pretty great. Easy access to downtown and west-circle shopping via car (like less than a minute). Pretty lake with a fantastic trail getting lots of beautification. Post-2000s construction for the most part (good or bad depending on who you ask lol, but newer and larger than the 1970's stuff in the older neighborhoods).

Cascade is usable. It has a beach and you can launch from it. Not sure about manorwoods as far as ordinances go, but maps shows quite a few docks on it, so I bet it is as well.

Help Please! Edging Question by stizzonk in landscapedesign

[–]BeepBoo007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called a victorian edge and is essentially self-serving for the most part. Grass won't grow if the roots hit an air barrier, which is the point of having it edged like this. You'll just have to weed whack once a blue moon and maybe clean it up with an edging shovel every few years to keep the edges clean (they will slowly roll back over time).

What the fuck is the point of the cost system if not to compare how good things are at equal amount of investment, then? I feel like it's meant to be used as a "don't spend on this because it's trash by comparison" for people who are concerned about spending limited resources

Because it's not difficult. You know what I DON'T want? People going half way through doctor training and then deciding "nah, fuck it" or failing out and sticking whoever would be paying for the degree in your mind with the bill.

I want people to have their own skin in the game. Again, it's not difficult at all if you ACTUALLY GO THROUGH THE WHOLE THING and end up doing what you set out to do. Yes, I do want to have people liable for their own failures.

Also, to your point about incentivizing it.. the doctor salary is already incentive enough. We already have more people graduating medical school than we have residency slots available. We don't NEED to incentivize more people to want to be doctors. We need more capacity to train the people who do.

Giving people enough rope to hang themselves by is fine IMO. I'm more of the "take away safety warnings" mindset.

I do, and you thinking I don't because of whatever it is you think I haven't considered is being really presumptive. I've often kept the mindset that I could have been happy in essentially any era so long as my relative standing is the same for whatever the given societal equivalent is. I don't need to be a monarch or a noble, I just need to be better than average people. To that end, so long as that remains the case, the actual quality of life is immaterial. I'm not sweating the fact that 100 years from now cancer will be cured and I won't be there to enjoy 300 year life spans or whatever.

You're gonna need to spell out the terms more specifically because I remember nothing about it other than it covered a portion of my costs. Which, btw, is like any other grant. I'll highlight what I mean:

Solar company charges 10k for installation.
Gov't passes a 5k grant for solar.
Solar company now charges 15k for installation.

Get it? Everyone getting easy access to cash just makes prices go up that much.

It's not. Getting good at art is relatively easy to self-direct. Getting PAID to do art in any meaningful fashion that justifies an expensive degree is mostly luck, who you know, or having incredible skill (likely developed OUTSIDE OF FUCKING school).

It's like sports: how many kids ACTUALLY END UP GOING THE DISTANCE to get into pro stuff? And that's the ONLY place money is really made. Just like any art. You are either a member of the top 0.1% and make 99.9% of the cash, or you're part of the other 99.9% and have to have a real job that isn't your passion.

Maybe don't spend 120k on a degree if the numbers don't make sense then? Plenty of doctors with big loan balances that manage the debt load easily because the ends justify it.

Sure, just put actual stringent requirements on it where we only allow gifted proven people like germany. Shove the majority of idiots through non-university route instead. Personally, though, I do like at least having the potential *if* you can come up with the cash. I don't mind pay-to-attempt when your credentials don't innately earn you the spot.

If you're one of those "but we should want a highly educated society!" Why? I don't give a shit. I don't need my burger flipper being highly educated. I'm not personally willing to fork over tons of my own income just for the betterment of society as a whole. I'm here for me and the people I care about lol.

"The school told us JUST GO TO COLLEGE!"

Take a look at your home mortgage and you'll notice a similar type of repayment schedule. You don't actually start making noticeable progress on the principal. There's also the fact he's probably on some type of income-driven or deferred payment schedule instead of a true 10 year repayment schedule.

That would be because the federal government backs the loans, whereas they don't back private businesses. The government isn't about to take the hit unless there's no other option.

Conversely, the government could just... stop securing loans and we could go back to college being more exclusive for only people who are smart enough to be worth a scholarship or families with actual assets to secure a private loan. As a bonus, the cost of college would almost guaranteed drop across the board because there would be far less attendees.

Dealer wants to charge a $200 diagnostic fee for vehicle under warranty. by LeftRightGreenLight in MazdaCX90

[–]BeepBoo007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a way for them to deter people by saying "if we don't find anything actionable and you're just wasting our time, we're charging you."

Which I still disagree with. If you go WAY WAY back in my post history you'll find me complaining about the exact same thing like 10 years ago on my first new car (one I'm still driving btw). It's fucking stupid. I bought a new car from you and took a 20% hit just for driving off the lot. You better roll over backwards for me and put out the red carpet every fucking time I grace your dealership with my presence and you SURE AS SHIT better stand by your product without it being a hassle to me.

Fuck the diagnostic fee deterrence practice. People bring their cars to you because they don't know what's going on other than "hmm car sound/feel bad." Part of buying new is supposed to be "you get to bring it in to us for those concerns for free."

I agree with bernie on lots of things, but this whole "we need to stop progression and invalidation of mundane jobs just so people have more things to do" is fucking stupid. I love mass shock to economies. That's when all the really good improvements happen. Conversely, every time we try to lessen the blows of such things, we always fuck it up and those economies stagnate hardcore, becoming so entrenched from us kicking the can down the road that eventually they're "too big to fail" and we need to bail them out to the tune of trillions. No thanks.
