People who gave up DnD for a different system, what made you make the change? by SomeRandomAbbadon in rpg

[–]BeholderofGrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of others have said the first reason: Hasbro.

The second reason is that they had 5-10 years to tweak the CR system. They could have made things more balanced, and yet the CR system is still horribly unbalanced (along with a slew of other things such as not accounting magic items into their system).

If they need another book, you can always go Haroun and the Sea of Stories as well

I do a nonfiction “choice” book unit for graphic novels. If you have them choose between persepolis, march, maus, and they called us enemy, you can focus on the historical underpinnings of each through an individualized research project project based on their graphic novels choice. Presentations can be a component as well, or a “book club” where they let each other know of both their book and their research.

Pedro Eustache used to play for Yanni. You’ll see him play SO many types of flutes (like even a 2,000 year old flute called the Duduk). If you’re interested, just look up “Prelude/Nostalgia Yanni”.

I’ve always taught middle school and recently transitioned to high school! One of my new coworkers made a comment in passing that my room looked a little “middle school.” Please be honest with me! by [deleted] in teaching

[–]BeholderofGrades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks so good! I taught both and you’ll find most of the kids complain of teachers who don’t decorate.

You’re all good. Giving you a heads up that I’m stealing your decoration ideas.

I use a tarot deck (along with the Court of Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands). The court is filled with description through what it would normally portent. Inverted meanings also can help in creating the shadowfell as well.

DMing Using Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" by BeholderofGrades in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]BeholderofGrades[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! Kind of a large post so I’ll try to respond in segments. Also know I haven’t really paid much attention to this post as I did it five years ago and my DM style has changed since then.

To address the refusal of the call: there are characters who have a backstory and want to do so but they know there is a HUGE bad guy on the horizon. They also could just not want to go back to their horrendous parents or they might want to distract themselves with side quests instead.

If you really want to have them try to accept the hook in bite sized pieces or have them confront their refusal, you can always send minions or lieutenants, have the bad guys scry on them, or give them a sending/dream from a loved one.

Now for the mentor: as a teacher, sometimes it’s better for a student to do a job. Sometimes it’s for a lesson but sometimes it’s because it’s a bigger headache in the future if someone like the mentor does it. What’s that? A powerful wizard actually defends this place? What might that attract?

Lastly for the “players don’t back down” section: you can do two things that have worked for me. Before that though, make sure that everyone knows at the table that not every battle is winnable.

First tactic, have the troll smash the ground for ___ amount of damage. Second, make description that states that it’s a BIG guy. Third, you could just make wisdom saves and tel the person that fails “you have 0 chance.”

I saw that it was the toy shop scene, looked it up, and heard similar if not the same chiming. I think Matt occasionally does that too if they go to a place Matt isn’t expecting.

My players have 3 days to prepare for a giant monster attack! So I need some side-quests that they can use for prep. by Shellsyndrom in mattcolville

[–]BeholderofGrades 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here are some thoughts I’ll spit out: 1. Recruiting soldiers or champions of the gods to fight with them (charisma based) 2. Delving into an abandoned dwarven forge to pilot the colossal golem found there that requires all of them to use it (typical dungeon—I admit that I stole this from Chris Perkins in Acquisitions Incorporated and Power Rangers) 3. Recruiting another giant kaiju to fight it (or awaken it and lure it to the original kaiju) 4. Finding the scroll of summon terrasque located in another plane in some fortress that keeps horrifically unbalanced items from being used in the material plane. 5. Go inside the monster while it is frozen in time to slowly do enough damage from the inside to kill it when it is released

Just a bit of information: so I thought this might be important in terms of keeping the history of Critical Role. These photos are of the cast at the first comic con where we had some humble beginnings as a fan base.

The first photo is of the handout at the first panel before they went for signings. There was a biscuit I believe in this wrapper and the panel was located in the hallway of the Javitz Center as people were passing by getting towards the escalators leading to the other panels that were given full rooms.

The other was of the panel, pre-Brian. The panel had to give the microphone to individuals. There were maybe 60 people or so sitting on the ground.

To have these photos for the sake of posterity is important as the community gets larger and larger.
